DAS observations and modeling of perforation-induced guided waves in a shale reservoir

Perforation shots can be recorded by downhole distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) arrays. In this study, we demonstrate that guided waves induced by perforation shots propagate in a low-velocity shale reservoir layer. Such guided waves have a high frequency content of up to 700 Hz and are dispersive, with lower frequencies propagating faster than higher frequencies. They can propagate as P- and S-waves, and their group velocity is higher than their phase velocity. The high temporal and spatial resolution of the DAS array enables unaliased recording despite short wavelengths. The guided waves disappear from the records when the well exits the shale formation. Synthetic modeling predicts their existence for acoustic and elastic cases in simple velocity models. We show that perforation shots from an offset well at a distance of about 270 m can be recorded by the DAS array. Induced guided S-waves undergo significant disturbances while propagating through previously stimulated zones. These disturbances manifest as kinematic and dynamic changes of the recorded wavefield and as scattered events. The nature of the stimulation-induced changes is interpreted as a combination of unknown spatial and temporal effects linked to fluid-filled fractures. Guided waves hold tremendous potential for high-resolution reservoir imaging and should be used in conjunction with conventional DAS arrays and state-of-the-art DAS interrogators.

Shale formation properties are crucial for the hydrocarbon production performance of unconventional reservoirs. Microseismic-induced guided waves, which propagate within the low-velocity shale formation, are an ideal candidate for accurate estimation of the shale thickness, velocity, and anisotropy. A DAS fiber deployed along the horizontal section of a monitor well can provide a high-resolution recording of guided waves excited by microseismic events during hydraulic fracturing operations. These guided waves manifest a highly dispersive behavior that allows for seismic inversion of the shale formation properties. An adaptation of the propagator matrix method is presented to estimate guided wave dispersion curves and its accuracy is validated by comparison to 3-D elastic wavefield simulations. The propagator matrix formulation holds for cases of vertical transverse isotropy (VTI) as well. A sensitivity analysis of the theoretical dispersion relations of the guided waves shows that they are mostly influenced by the thickness and S-wave velocity of the low-velocity shale reservoir. The VTI parameters of the formation are also shown to have an impact on the dispersion relations. These physical insights provide the foundation for a dispersion-based model inversion for a 1-D depth-dependent structure of the reservoir and its surroundings. The inversion procedure is validated in a synthetic case and applied to the field records collected in an Eagle Ford hydraulic fracturing project. The inverted structure agrees well with a sonic log acquired several hundred meters away from the monitor well. Seismic inversion using guided wave dispersion therefore shows promise to become a novel and cost-effective strategy for in-situ estimation of reservoir structure and properties, which complements microseismic-based interpretation and production-related information.

Perforation shots excite guided waves that propagate in a low-velocity unconventional shale reservoir. They have a frequency content of up to 700 Hz and are dispersive. We have analyzed horizontal crosswell perforation shots recorded by a distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) array. As guided waves propagate through a previously stimulated area, we observe a dramatic influence on the guided SH waves in the form of delayed arrival times, scattering, phase incoherency, and loss of amplitude and frequency. The leaky compressional waves undergo a gradual slowdown. Using a simple geometric analysis of the spatial locations of the distortions in the direct arrivals of the guided SH waves, we can estimate the half-lengths of the induced fractures, which range from 50% to 75% of the distance between the perforated and monitoring wells. Furthermore, we find that the propagation disturbances originate from the middle of the stimulated area. Other diffracted signals, notably from frac plugs, are clearly visible in the data. We report the first large-scale use of DAS records of guided waves. Their potential for high-resolution imaging and inversion of subsurface properties before and after hydraulic stimulation opens new possibilities for the use of seismology in optimizing production from unconventional reservoirs.

This paper presents new results of detailed seismic tomography (ST) on the deep structure beneath the Middle Tien Shan to a depth of 60 km. For a better understanding of the detected heterogeneities, the obtained velocity models were compared with the results of magnetotelluric sounding (MTS) along the Kekemeren and Naryn profiles, running parallel to the 74 and 76 meridians, respectively. We found that in the study region the velocity characteristics and geoelectric properties correlate with each other. The high-velocity high-resistivity anomalies correspond to the parts of the Tarim and Kazakhstan-Junggar plates submerged under the Tien Shan. We revealed that the structure of the Middle Tien Shan crust is conditioned by the presence of the Central Tien Shan microcontinent. It manifests itself as two anomalies lying one below the other: the lower low-velocity low-resistivity anomaly, and the upper high-velocity high-resistivity anomaly. The fault zones, limiting the Central Tien Shan microcontinent, appear as low-velocity low-resistivity anomalies. The obtained features indicate the fluid saturation of the fault zones. According to the revealed features of the Central Tien Shan geological structure, it is assumed that the lower-crustal low-velocity layer can play a significant role in the delamination of the mantle part of the submerged plates.

Three-dimensional P wave velocity models under the Zipingpu reservoir in Longmenshan fault zone are obtained with a resolution of 2 km in the horizontal direction and 1 km in depth. We used a total of 8589 P wave arrival times from 1014 local earthquakes recorded by both the Zipingpu reservoir network and temporary stations deployed in the area. The 3-D velocity images at shallow depth show the low-velocity regions have strong correlation with the surface trace of the Zipingpu reservoir. According to the extension of those low-velocity regions, the infiltration depth directly from the Zipingpu reservoir itself is limited to 3.5 km depth, while the infiltration depth downwards along the Beichuan-Yingxiu fault in the study area is about 5.5 km depth. Results show the low-velocity region in the east part of the study area is related to the Proterozoic sedimentary rocks. The Guanxian-Anxian fault is well delineated by obvious velocity contrast and may mark the border between the Tibetan Plateau in the west and the Sichuan basin in the east.

We present a new method for correcting the amplitudes of arrivals in an acoustic finite-difference simulation for elastic effects. In this method, we selectively compute an estimate of the error incurred when the acoustic wave equation is used to approximate the behavior of the elastic wave equation. This error estimate is used to generate an effective source field in a second acoustic simulation. The result of this second simulation is then applied as a correction to the original acoustic simulation. The overall cost is approximately twice that of an acoustic simulation but substantially less than the cost of an elastic simulation. Because both simulations are acoustic, no S-waves are generated, so dispersed converted waves are avoided. We tested the characteristics of the method on a simple synthetic model designed to simulate propagation through a strong acoustic impedance contrast representative of sedimentary geology. It corrected amplitudes to high accuracy for reflected arrivals over a wide range of incidence angles. We also evaluated results from simulations on more complex models that demonstrated that the method was applicable in realistic sedimentary models containing a wide range of seismic contrasts. However, its accuracy was reduced for wide-angle reflections from very high impedance contrasts such as a shallow top-salt interface. We examined the influence of modeling at coarse grid resolutions, in which converted S-waves in the equivalent elastic simulation are dispersed. These results provide some validation for the accuracy of the method when applied using finite-difference grids designed for acoustic modeling. The method appears to offer a cost-effective means of modeling elastic amplitudes for P-wave arrivals in a useful range of velocity models. It has several potential applications in imaging and inversion.

Abstract The tectonic setting of Java island, located at southwestern edge of the Eurasia continent, is dominated by the subduction of Indo-Australia plate. One of the characteristics of active subduction is active seismicity, the generation of arc magmatism and volcanic activity. Mt. Merapi is one example of active volcano related with the subduction process. It is one of the most active volcanoes with location close to high population area. To better understand this area, we employed the Receiver Function technique, a method to image sub surface structure by removing the vertical component from horizontal component. First, we collected high magnitude events and processed RF with water level deconvolution method. Then, we constructed synthetic model with initial velocity input from previous tomography model. Note that we used reflectivity method in generating synthetic model with input parameters matched with parameters from real data processing. Next, we adjusted velocity inputs mainly on tops sediments (1-3 km) to include sediment layers and volcanic rocks, mid-depth low velocity zone that may be related with magma chamber and depth of crust-mantle boundary. Current forward velocity models show a relatively good agreement from 3 stations (ME25, ME32 and ME36). We estimate a thin layer of sediments followed a zone of velocity layer at a depth of 10-15 km and crust-mantle boundary ranging from 26-29 km. In this study, simulated that the signal of sediments layer and low velocity layers interfere main crust mantle boundary that supposed to be highest signal after the P wave in the typical receiver function study.

abstract Plotting of three-dimensional ray surfaces in p-Δ-z space provides a means of determining p-Δ curves for any focal depth. A region of increasing velocity with depth is represented in p-Δ-z space by a trough, and a region of decreasing velocity, by a crest. Two sets of ray trajectories, the arrivals refracted outside a low-velocity zone, and the guided waves inside the zone, can be merged into a single set along the ray that splits into two at the top of the low-velocity zone. This ray is common to both sets. This construction provides continuity of the locus of ray turning points through the low-velocity zone and thus allows definition of p-Δ curves inside as well as outside the low-velocity zone.

<p><span>We present a seismic tomographic image of Fennoscandia based on data from the ScanArray project in Norway, Sweden, and Finland, which operated during 2012-2017, together with data from earlier projects and stationary stations. We use relative traveltime residuals of P- and S- waves in high- and low-frequency bands and apply the frequency-dependent crustal correction. We use seismic signals from earthquakes at epicentral distances between 30° and 104° and magnitudes larger than 5.5. The general purpose of this study is to understand the possible causes of the high topography in Scandinavia along the passive continental margins in the North Atlantic as well as the interrelation between structure at the surface and in the lithospheric mantle.</span></p><p><span>We present an upper-mantle velocity structure for most Fennoscandia derived for the depth range 50-800 km with a 3D multiscale parameterization for an inversion mesh-grid with dimensions </span><em><span>dx</span></em><span>=</span><em><span>dy</span></em><span>=17.38 km and </span><em><span>dz</span></em><span>=23.44 km. In all body-wave tomography methods, smearing of anomalies is expected. Therefore resolution tests are critical for assessing the resolution of the parameters determined in the velocity models. The resolution of the models depends on several factors, including the noise level and general quality of data, the density of observations, the distance and back-azimuthal distribution of sources, the damping applied, and the model parameterization. We use checkerboard and model-driven (block and cylindrical) tests for assessing the resolution of our models.</span></p><p><span>Seismic models derived in this study are compared to existing and past topography to contribute to understanding mechanisms responsible for the topographic changes in the Fennoscandian region. The models also provide a basis for deriving high-resolution models of temperature and compositional anomalies that may contribute to understanding the observed, enigmatic topography.</span></p>

Two robust imaging technologies are reviewed that provide subsurface geologic information in challenging environments. The first one is wave-equation dispersion (WD) inversion of surface waves and guided waves (GW) for the shear-velocity (S-wave) and compressional-velocity (P-wave) models, respectively. The other method is traveltime inversion for the velocity model, in which supervirtual refraction interferometry (SVI) is used to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio of far-offset refractions. We have determined the benefits and liabilities of both methods with synthetic seismograms and field data. The benefits of WD are that (1) there is no layered-medium assumption, as there is in conventional inversion of dispersion curves. This means that 2D or 3D velocity models can be accurately estimated from data recorded by seismic surveys over rugged topography, and (2) WD mostly avoids getting stuck in local minima. The liability is that WD for surface waves is almost as expensive as full-waveform inversion (FWI) and, for Rayleigh waves, only recovers the S-velocity distribution to a depth no deeper than approximately 1/2 to 1/3 wavelength of the lowest-frequency surface wave. The limitation for GW is that, for now, it can estimate the P-velocity model by inverting the dispersion curves from GW propagating in near-surface low-velocity zones. Also, WD often requires user intervention to pick reliable dispersion curves. For SVI, the offset of usable refractions can be more than doubled, so that traveltime tomography can be used to estimate a much deeper model of the P-velocity distribution. This can provide a more effective starting velocity model for FWI. The liability is that SVI assumes head-wave first arrivals, not those from strong diving waves.

A multioffset, three‐component vertical seismic profiling (VSP) experiment was carried out in the Sudbury Basin, Ontario, as a part of the LITHOPROBE Sudbury Transect. The main objectives were determination of the shallow velocity structure in the middle of the Sudbury Basin, development of an effective VSP data processing flow, correlation of the VSP survey results with the surface seismic reflection data, and demonstration of the usefulness of the VSP method in a crystalline rock environment. The VSP data processing steps included rotation of the horizontal component data, traveltime inversion for velocity analysis, Radon transform for wavefield separation, and preliminary analysis of shear‐wave data. After wavefield separation, the flattened upgoing wavefields for both P‐waves and S‐waves display consistent reflection events from three depth levels. The VSP-CDP transformed section and corridor stacked section correlate well with the high‐resolution surface reflection data. In addition to obtaining realistic velocity models for both P‐ and S‐waves through least‐square inversion and synthetic seismic modeling for the Chelmsford area, the VSP experiment provided an independent estimation for the reflector dip using three component hodogram analysis, which indicates that the dip of the contact between the Chelmsford and Onwatin formations, at an approximate depth of 380 m in the Chelmsford borehole, is approximately 10.5° southeast. This study demonstrates that multioffset, three‐component VSP experiments can provide important constraints and auxiliary information for shallow crustal seismic studies in crystalline terrain. Thus, the VSP technique bridges the gap between the surface seismic‐reflection technique and well‐log surveys.
