Both external and internal quality of fruits such as tomatoes can be evaluated by different methods, but all most all of the methods are destructive. For this reason, there is a need to reassess some of the alternative techniques. Nondestructive quality evaluation is an attractive alternative. The principles of different nondestructive quality evaluation techniques such as optical, physical, and fluorescence techniques applied to tomato fruit is explained. Successful application of these techniques that could be used for evaluation of different quality attributes are illustrated. The advantages of nondestructive quality evaluation techniques are that they are very fast, easy, labor- and time-intensive, and inexpensive. These techniques could also be useful to evaluate the quality of other vegetables.

The choice of alternative techniques in urban stormwater drainage (infiltration and detention systems), in the course of a project, is most often made with a poor understanding of site constraints, and the possibilities afforded by these techniques. This gives rise to extra costs and also subsequent malfunctioning. To arrive at feasible choices, we have formalised the decision-making process, taking account of the multiple criteria and the large number of partners involved. At present, we are developing a decision-making tool for alternative techniques in urban stormwater management at the preliminary study stage. The first phase makes it possible to eliminate solutions which are unworkable (elimination phase). It is aimed at the designer. Work on the next phase (the decision-making phase), which is more complex, is in progress. It will make it possible, in collaboration with all the partners involved, to choose a stormwater drainage strategy which will best suit the objectives and the wishes of the partners. It uses multi-criteria methods.

The implementation of alternative techniques in urban stormwater management is a difficult problem in terms of choice, design, construction, and operating. We applied a quality management approach to try and have a better understanding of these techniques. The quality of an alternative technique in urban stormwater management is defined; the factors that lead to failures were identified and analysed. In order to reduce these factors, tools were developed, and measures that allow the achievement of the necessary standard of quality are suggested. In this article, all the illustrations refer to the porous pavement technique.

We present Machete, a straightforward segmenter one can use to isolate custom gestures in continuous input. Machete uses traditional continuous dynamic programming with a novel dissimilarity measure to align incoming data with gesture class templates in real time. Advantages of Machete over alternative techniques is that our segmenter is computationally efficient, accurate, device-agnostic, and works with a single training sample. We demonstrate Machete’s effectiveness through an extensive evaluation using four new high-activity datasets that combine puppeteering, direct manipulation, and gestures. We find that Machete outperforms three alternative techniques in segmentation accuracy and latency, making Machete the most performant segmenter. We further show that when combined with a custom gesture recognizer, Machete is the only option that achieves both high recognition accuracy and low latency in a video game application.

A model incorporating the effects of recirculation time lag, cardiac output, clearance, volume of distribution, and the variance of the distribution of recirculation times is applied to the analysis of indicator dilution curves. Experiments on dogs with use of radioactively labeled diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid were done to evaluate the model. This five-parameter model can be fitted to data obtained during the period from less than 1 min to 3 h after a single injection of indicator. Estimates of cardiac output and clearance are in satisfactory agreement with estimates obtained by alternative techniques. Estimates of the time lag and volume of distribution are of physiologically plausible magnitude. The variance of the distribution of recirculation times is a new parameter, of which the possible usefulness to physiologists is discussed.

AbstractCdSe nanocrystals chemically linked to nanocrystalline titanium dioxide substrates form a promising material for nanostructured photovoltaic devices. The usual method for attaching the nanocrystals to the titanium dioxide substrate is by means of a linking molecule (such as mercaptopropionic acid) or in-situ growth. In this paper, we report the use of an alternative technique, electrophoretic deposition (EPD), to directly deposit already formed CdSe nanocrystals onto the substrate. In EPD, a voltage is established between two electrodes that are immersed in a solution of nanocrystals. At room temperature, a fraction of the nanocrystals are thermally charged, and these charged nanocrystals migrate to the electrodes and adhere to the surface. A significant advantage of EPD over the use of linking molecules is the speed with which the nanocrystals are deposited: EPD takes only a few minutes, compared to the several hours required for the alternative techniques. Additionally, we have fabricated initial photovoltaic devices based on electrophoretically deposited CdSe nanocrystals on a planar TiO2 thin film.

Bladed disks are key components of turbomachines and their dynamic behavior is strongly conditioned by their small accidental lack of symmetry referred to as blade mistuning. The experimental identification of mistuned disks is complicated due to several reasons related both to measurement and data processing issues. This paper describes the realization of a test rig designed to investigate the behavior of mistuned disks and develop or validate data processing techniques for system identification. To simplify experiments, using the opposite than in the real situation, the disk is fixed, while the excitation is rotating. The response measured during an experiment carried out in the resonance-crossing condition is used to compare three alternative techniques to estimate the frequency-response function of the disk.
