This article reports results of a content analysis of 18 teaching assistant (TA) manuals. Topics were divided into four major categories of tasks: professional socialization, intellectual, interpersonal, and organizational. Twenty-six of the 103 topics identified were included in more than 50% of the manuals. Among the common topics, more topics were included from the categories dealing with intellectual and interpersonal tasks than from the other two categories, highlighting the importance of these two dimensions of effective teaching, which is consistent with Lowman's (1984) theoretical model. The topic outline provided by our study could serve as a model for TA manuals.

As engineering education strives to progress towards a student-centric learning model, a competency gap with future educators becomes more apparent. In particular, the expectation of graduate student teaching assistants (GTAs) in attaining teaching competency to support this dynamic learning environment, often without sufficient training, is unrealistic. In the following paper, we present an implementation of the flexible Teaching Assistant Consultant (TAC) program, which serves to support the development of novice GTA competencies using a discipline-specific model with emphasis on assisting the unique challenges of international teaching assistants. We introduce the specific role of the TAC in terms of core principles and deliverables, and the strategic structure of the campus wide program at the University of Victoria. We conclude by detailing the specific implementation of the program in engineering by illustrating the role and deliverables of the engineering TAC.

This article describes the design and implementation of a workshop on teaching and learning for graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) in a Faculty of Science at a major Canadian research-intensive university. The approach borrows heavily from an existing successful workshop for faculty but is tailored specifically to the needs of GTAs in science in an environment where departmental resources are largely absent. Thus, the workshop is unusual in that it finds a midpoint between centrally administered, discipline-neutral programs and those that are discipline specific. Equally, it is unusual because it was conceived, implemented, and continues to evolve through the active involvement of teaching fellows, themselves GTAs, who receive particular preparation for their role. The approach is discussed in relation to other approaches found in the literature.

This study identifies factors that influence the development of teacher efficacy in STEM graduate teaching assistants over the course of one semester. Those with high teacher efficacy draw upon mastery experience, vicarious experience, and verbal and social persuasions from reliable sources, such as professors and accomplished peers.

Organizational culture refers to the common beliefs and values that are present in the organization which guides the behavior of its members. Organizational culture affects the way people and groups interact with each other, with clients, and with stakeholders. The main purpose of this paper is to study the OCTAPACE Culture at two different organizations belonging to Hospitality sector in Nagpur. The paper also aims to find out if there are differences in the culture of the two organizations. OCTAPACE profile instrument developed by Udai Pareek was used to study the cultural ethos at the selected organizations. Data analysis was done using SPSS. Findings indicate that the both the organizations scored within the normative values on five dimensions (Collaboration, Trust, Autonomy, Pro action, Confrontation), whereas one organization had excellent scores on two dimensions (Authenticity, Experimenting), the other scored below the lowest normative value on Openness.

This study explores the outcomes of reflective journaling among novice Graduate Teaching Assistants during the initial stages of their professional development. It seeks to establish whether there were common concerns addressed in their journals and if different levels of reflection were achieved. By means of content analysis of 177 entries, nine common themes were identified. Among these, “methodology” and “classroom management” were the most prevalent. Three degrees of reflection were used to categorize the entries. Slightly over half of the entries achieved high levels of reflection, whereas 49% of the entries did not. Recommendations for teacher educators and facilitators of the professional development of graduate students are provided.

Biology graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) often used adaptive coping strategies to manage teaching and research anxieties. Notably, GTAs tended to use strategies such as support seeking, self-reliance, accommodation, and distraction more often to manage research anxieties compared with teaching anxieties. Over time, GTAs narrowed their adaptive coping to certain strategies.

Prevalence of burnout syndrome and referee personal meaning in handball referees. This study aims to verify the prevalence of burnout in handball referees and to investigate the referee’s perception of his/her profession, and identifying factors that can cause burnout syndrome. Twenty-seven handball referees of both sexes participated in the study. The burnout inventory for referees was used. In addition to the questionnaire, the referees responded to an open-ended question: “Write the meaning of refereeing for you”. This question seeks to investigate the referee’s perception of his profession. To evaluate the burnout questionnaire in referees, the data were analyzed in the program Bioestat version 5.0. The Shapiro-Wilk test was used to verify the normality of the dimensions. In the absence of normality in the data, the inferential analysis was done with the use of Anova Kruskall Wallis, with post hoc of Wilcoxon, in order to compare the dimensions. To evaluate the open-ended question, we treat the data by the content analysis technique. The evaluated referees presented low rates of total burnout. However, the physical and emotional exhaustion dimension showed to be more perceived when compared to the other two dimensions: reduced sense of sports accomplishment and sports devaluation. Based on the analysis of the meaning of refereeing, it was possible to identify that motivational factors, especially emotion and pleasure, contribute to the adherence and permanence in the sport’s context, so emotion and pleasure in the arbitration were the main motivational factors. Therefore, referees showed little propensity to manifest the burnout syndrome.
