AbstractThe paper deals with the study of seven selected natural plant oils. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and thermally stimulated discharge (TSD) methods were used. It has been found that most of the oils tested are in a glassy state at low temperature and have multiple transitions in the low temperature range. DSC shows complex melting-like processes or glass transition. For both DMA and TSD, the scaffold supportive method was used and found as a suitable one. DMA and TSD proved more sensitive than DSC and revealed at least two transitions between − 120 and − 40 °C. In the case of three oils (argan, avocado and sunflower), current reversal was observed by TSD; this symptom cannot be fully explained at the moment.

This study was undertaken to explore the effect of heating on gutta-percha, analyzing the occurrence of endothermic peaks corresponding to the transformation that occurs in the crystalline structure of the polymer during thermal manipulation. This study also seeked to determine the temperature at which these peaks occur, causing a transformation from the beta- to the alpha-form, and from the alpha- to the amorphous phase. Eight nonstandardized gutta-percha points commercially available in Brazil (Konne, Tanari, Endopoint, Odous, Dentsply 0.04, Dentsply 0.06, Dentsply TP, Dentsply FM) and pure gutta-percha (control) were analysed using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetry analysis (TGA). The transition temperatures were determined and analysed. With the exception of Dentsply 0.04 and Dentsply 0.06, the majority of the products showed thermal behaviour typical of beta-gutta-percha, with two endothermic peaks, exhibiting two crystalline transformations upon heating from ambient temperature to 130°. Upon cooling and reheating, few samples presented two endothermic peaks. It was concluded that heating dental gutta-percha to 130°C causes changes to its chemical structure which permanently alter its physical properties.

Phospholipid bilayers containing branched chain molecules, phytol (1), vitamin E (2), and phytanic acid (3), have been investigated by 31P nmr, esr, and differential scanning calorimetry (dsc).A 31P lanthanide induced shift study indicated varying permeabilities to Pr3+ in the order phytanic acid > vitamin E > phytol > egg yolk lecithin alone; the half-lives (in days) were 0.002, 0.14, 0.83, and 6.5, respectively. The activation energy for Pr3+ permeation through the egg yolk lecithin–phytol membrane was found to be 84.9 ± 0.8 kJ.The following esr order parameters, S3, were obtained using the extrinsic spin label, 5-doxylpalmitic acid, in oriented mixed multibilayers: S3 (1) = 0.29, S3 (2) = 0.50, and S3 (3) = 0.02.Differential scanning calorimetry revealed a lowering of the gel–liquid crystalline phase transition temperature, Tc, as the concentration of incorporated isoprenoid compound increases, with eventual disappearance of the endotherm. Specific entropy, s, calculated for dipalmitoyl lecithin +25 mol% 3 is 126 J kg−1 K−1 compared to s = 114.2 J kg−1 K−1 for 1and s = 85 J kg−1 K−1 for 2.

Our former studies delivered a strong evidence that water indirectly treated with low-temperature, low-pressure glow plasma of low frequency (GP) changed its structure depending on the atmosphere in which such treatment was performed (air, ammonia, and nitrogen) and on the time of the treatment (0 to 120 min). In every case, water of different physicochemical characteristics and interesting biological functions was produced. Therefore, the relevant studies were extended to treating deionized water with GP under methane. The resulting samples were characterized by means of ultraviolet/visible (UV/VIS), Fourier transformation infrared-attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR), electron spin resonance (ESR) and Raman spectroscopies, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetry, pH, conductivity, and refractive index. The generated samples of water had entirely different physicochemical properties from those recorded for water treated with GP in the air and under both ammonia and nitrogen. The treatment of water with GP under methane did not produce clathrates hosting methane molecules. Thermogravimetry delivered an evidence that the treatment with GP increased the aqueous solubility of methane. That solubility non-linearly changed against the treatment time.

AbstractNon-isothermal dielectric analysis (DEA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) techniques were used to study the epoxy nanocomposites prepared by reacting 1,3,5,7,9,11,13,15-octa[dimethylsiloxypropylglycidylether] pentaciclo [9.5.1.13,9.15,15 .17,13] octasilsesquioxane (ODPG) with methylenedianiline (MDA). Loss factor (ε”) and activation energy were calculated by DEA. The relationships between the loss factor, the activation energy, the structure of the network, and the mechanical properties were investigated. Activation energies determined by DEA and DSC, heat of polymerization, fracture toughness and tensile modulus show the same profile for mechanical properties with respect to ODPG content.
