The manufacturing and testing procedures for two experimental pressure vessels with large nozzles encroaching into the knuckle region of the vessel head are described. Experimental linear elastic stress levels and plastic loads for pressure and combined axial and in-plane bending nozzle loads are compared with predicted values determined using non-linear finite element analysis. The quality of the results are considered to justify the procedures developed by the authors to conduct a parametric study of the individual limit loads and their interaction for these complex structures.

Abstract The paper describes the intention of the authors to determine whether it is possible to predict relative belt edge endurance for radial passenger car tires using the finite element method. Three groups of tires with different belt edge configurations were tested on a fleet test in an attempt to validate predictions from the finite element results. A two-dimensional, axisymmetric finite element analysis was first used to determine if the results from such an analysis, with emphasis on the shear deformations between the belts, could be used to predict a relative ranking for belt edge endurance. It is shown that such an analysis can lead to erroneous conclusions. A three-dimensional analysis in which tires are modeled under free rotation and static vertical loading was performed next. This approach resulted in an improvement in the quality of the correlations. The differences in the predicted values of various stress analysis parameters for the three belt edge configurations are studied and their implication on predicting belt edge endurance is discussed.

The proposed technique is a simplified method that enables rapid determination of limit loads for a general class of mechanical components and structures. The method makes use of statically admissible stress field based on a linear elastic finite element analysis to estimate the limit loads. The method is applied to a number of mechanical component configurations and the results compare well with those obtained by the corresponding elastic-plastic finite element analyses results.

Limit loads for pressure components are determined on the basis of a single linear elastic finite element analysis by invoking the concept of kinematically active (reference) volume in the context of the “mα-tangent” method. The resulting technique enables rapid determination of lower bound limit load for pressure components by eliminating the kinematically inactive volume. This method is applied to a number of practical components with different percentages of inactive volume. The results are compared with the corresponding inelastic finite element results, or available analytical solutions.

Pressure vessels are subjected to repeated loads during use and charging, which can causefine physical damage even in the elastic region. If the load is repeated under stress conditions belowthe yield strength, internal damage accumulates. Fatigue life evaluation of the structure of thepressure vessel using finite element analysis (FEA) is used to evaluate the life cycle of the structuraldesign based on finite element method (FEM) technology. This technique is more advanced thanfatigue life prediction that uses relational equations. This study describes fatigue analysis to predictthe fatigue life of a pressure vessel using stress data obtained from FEA. The life prediction results areuseful for improving the component design at a very early development stage. The fatigue life of thepressure vessel is calculated for each node on the model, and cumulative damage theory is used tocalculate the fatigue life. Then, the fatigue life is calculated from this information using the FEanalysis software ADINA and the fatigue life calculation program WINLIFE.

Decoupling the individual effects of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and surfactants when used as reinforcement materials in cement-based composites is aimed in this study. Powder MWCNTs were dispersed in deionized water using different types of surfactants as chemical dispersing agents and an ultrasonic tip processor. Cement pastes with carbon nanotubes additions of 0.15% by mass of cement were produced in two steps: first, the MWCNT/surfactant dispersions were combined with the mixing water, and then, cement was added and mixed until a homogeneous paste was obtained. Mechanical properties of the pastes cured at 7 days were measured, and their fracture behavior was characterized using the linear elastic finite element analysis. It was found that the reinforcing effect of MWCNT was masked by the negative effect of surfactants in the cement matrix; nevertheless, nanotubes were capable of increasing both stress and strain capacity of the composite by controlling the crack propagation process at the tip of the crack.

According to the results of finite element analysis (FEA), when the diameter of opening of the flat cover is no more than 0.5D (d≤0.5D), there is obvious stress concentration at the edge of opening, but only existed within the region of 2d. Increasing the thickness of flat covers could not relieve the stress concentration at the edge of opening. It is recommended that reinforcing element being installed within the region of 2d should be used. When the diameter of openings is larger than 0.5D (d>0.5D), conical or round angle transitions could be employed at connecting location, with which the edge stress decreased remarkably. However, the primary stress plus the secondary stress would be valued by 3[σ].

Laboratory fatigue life results are summarized from several test series of high-strength steel cannon breech closure assemblies pressurized by rapid application of hydraulic oil. The tests were performed to determine safe fatigue lives of high-pressure components at the breech end of the cannon and breech assembly. Careful reanalysis of the fatigue life tests provides data for stress and fatigue life models for breech components, over the following ranges of key parameters: 380–745 MPa cyclic internal pressure; 100–160 mm bore diameter cannon pressure vessels; 1040–1170 MPa yield strength A723 steel; no residual stress, shot peen residual stress, overload residual stress. Modeling of applied and residual stresses at the location of the fatigue failure site is performed by elastic-plastic finite element analysis using ABAQUS and by solid mechanics analysis. Shot peen and overload residual stresses are modeled by superposing typical or calculated residual stress distributions on the applied stresses. Overload residual stresses are obtained directly from the finite element model of the breech, with the breech overload applied to the model in the same way as with actual components. Modeling of the fatigue life of the components is based on the fatigue intensity factor concept of Underwood and Parker, a fracture mechanics description of life that accounts for residual stresses, material yield strength and initial defect size. The fatigue life model describes six test conditions in a stress versus life plot with an R2 correlation of 0.94, and shows significantly lower correlation when known variations in yield strength, stress concentration factor, or residual stress are not included in the model input, thus demonstrating the model sensitivity to these variables.

Abstract In high pressure applications, rectangular blocks of steel are used instead of cylinders as pressure vessels. Bores are drilled in these blocks for fluid flow. Intersecting bores with axes normal to each other and of almost equal diameters, produce stresses which can be many times higher than the internal pressure. Experimental results for the magnitude of maximum tensile stress along the intersection contour were available. A parametric finite element model simulated the experimental set up, followed by correlation between finite element analysis and experimental results. Finally, empirical methods are applied to generate models for the maximum tensile stress σ11 at cross bores of open and close ended blocks. Results from finite element analysis and empirical methods are further matched. Design optimization of cross bores is discussed.
