AbstractDipole emission pattern imaging experiments on single chains of common conjugated polymers (solubilized poly phenylene vinylenes) isolated by ink-jet printing techniques have revealed surprising uniformity in transition moment orientation perpendicular to the support substrate. In addition to uniform orientation, these species show a number of striking differences in photochemical stability, polarization anisotropy,[1] and spectral signatures[2] with respect to similar (well-studied) molecules dispersed in dilute thin-films. Combined with molecular mechanics simulation, these results point to a structural picture of a folded macromolecule as a highly ordered cylindrical nanostructure whose long-axis (approximately collinear with the conjugation axis) is oriented, by an electrostatic interaction, perpendicular to the coverglass substrate. These results suggest a number of important applications in nanoscale photonics and molecular-scale optoelectronics.

Tetrapyrazinoporphyrazine with peripheral menthol-thiophenyl substituents was synthesized using Linstead conditions and purified by flash column chromatography. The optimized synthetic and purification procedures allowed us to obtain a new macrocycle with 36% yield. Tetrapyrazinoporphyrazine derivative was characterized by UV–Vis and NMR spectroscopy, as well as MS spectrometry. Complex NMR studies using 1D and 2D NMR techniques allowed the analysis of the bulky menthol-thiophenyl substituted periphery of the new macrocycle. Further, photochemical stability and singlet oxygen quantum yield were determined by indirect method with diphenylisobenzofuran. The new tetrapyrazinoporphyrazine revealed low generation of singlet oxygen with a quantum yield of singlet oxygen formation at 2.3% in dimethylformamide. In turn, the macrocycle under irradiation with visible light presented very high stability with quantum yield for photostability of 9.59 × 10−6 in dimethylformamide, which figures significantly exceed the border for its classification as a stable porphyrinoid (10−4–10−5).

In this study, physicochemical and chemical methods of cellulose modification were used to increase the hydrophobicity of this natural semicrystalline biopolymer. It has been shown that acid hydrolysis of the initial cellulose increases its crystallinity, which improves hydrophobicity, but only to a small extent. A more significant hydrophobization effect was observed after chemical modification by esterification, when polar hydroxyl groups of cellulose were replaced by non-polar substituents. The esterification process was accompanied by the disruption of the crystalline structure of cellulose and its transformation into the mesomorphous structure of cellulose esters. It was found that the replacement of cellulose hydroxyls with ester groups leads to a significant increase in the hydrophobicity of the resulting polymer. Moreover, the increase of the number of non-polar groups in the ester substituent contributes to rise in hydrophobicity of cellulose derivative. Depending on the type of ester group, the hydrophobicity increased in the following order: acetate < propionate < butyrate. Therefore, tributyrate cellulose (TBC) demonstrated the most hydrophobicity among all studied samples. In addition, the mixed ester, triacetobutyrate cellulose (TAB), also showed a sufficiently high hydrophobicity. The promising performance properties of hydrophobic cellulose esters, TBC and TAB, were also demonstrated.
