Abstract Study aim: Martial arts and combat sports have been an alternative for individuals seeking the health benefits of physical activity and exercise, but little is known about its practitioners’ quality of life. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the quality of life of practitioners of five of the most common modalities in Brazil. Material and methods: A total of 922 young men, competitive and recreational practitioners of Brazilian jiu-jitsu, judo, karate, kung-fu, and taekwondo, answered the Brazilian version of the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire. Results: The results for each domain – physical, psychological, social, and environmental – are, respectively, as follow (mean ± standard deviation): Brazilian jiu-jitsu: 74 ± 11, 75 ± 12, 77 ± 17, 67 ± 14; judo: 74 ± 13, 75 ± 12, 77 ± 15, 64 ± 12; karate: 76 ± 13, 75 ± 12, 78 ± 15, 64 ± 13; kung-fu: 77 ± 13, 75 ± 13, 74 ± 17, 65 ± 13; taekwondo: 76 ± 12, 76 ± 11, 78 ± 16, 64 ± 13; total: 75 ± 13, 75 ± 12, 77 ± 16, 65 ± 13. There was no difference between modalities and no interaction between modalities and experience level. All groups and the total sample presented higher values than the normative national data in the physical and psychological domains. This was also the case for the judo, karate, and taekwondo groups, as well as the total sample in the social domain, and for the Brazilian jiu-jitsu and the whole sample in the environmental domain. Additionally, in the whole sample competitors scored higher than recreational practitioners in the psychological domain. Conclusion: These findings reveal that the practice of these modalities is associated with higher quality of life than the normative values. Longitudinal studies are warranted for a better understanding of this association.

Background: The quality of life of a society is conditioned by many factors, and depends, among other things, on preferred behavior patterns. Combat sports (CS) and martial arts (MA) have a special educational potential in the area of shaping positive behavior patterns and transmitting moral values which could help reduce aggression in society. The aim of the work was to determine the relationship between health behaviors and the quality of life of people who practice combat sports and martial arts (CS and MA) recreationally, in addition to practicing other sports, and as competitors at the master level. Methods: The research embraced 543 people who practice combat sports and martial arts. Three groups were selected: recreational (n = 362), people who reconciled practicing various sports (n = 115), and competitors who practiced combat sports or martial arts at the master level (n = 66). The average age of the respondents was 24.49 ± 7.82. The standardized WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire and another questionnaire for a lifestyle survey were applied. The Kruskal-Wallis test was used to compare several independent samples. In the case of determining statistical significance of differences the Mann-Whitney test was employed, and for the qualitative data analyses the trait frequency and the independence chi-square test were used. The effect size was calculated for each test ( E R 2 , rg, Cramér’s V). The value of p ≤ 0.05 was assumed to be statistically significant. Results: The highest quality of life (in the physical, psychological and environmental domains) was characteristic of the competitors, who practiced only combat sports and martial arts. They also displayed the most health-oriented behaviors. The surprising results were: lower quality of life in the assessment of nondrinkers and nonsmokers, and higher among people who were overweight. Conclusions: We have found positive correlations between practicing CS and MA, health behaviours and higher scores in quality of life self-evaluation, particularly where practitioners are exclusively focused on CS and MA and practice these at a competitive level. Our findings thus support the growing evidence that competitive level CS and MA are an effective means of improving people’s quality of life. Future research needs to clarify whether CS and MA can also be recommended to recreational and non-competitive practitioners as a means to improve their subjective quality of life.

Objective To investigate the effects of Shaolin Ba Duan Jin on patients with hypertension. Methods In the hypertensive patients detected in the national physical fitness test of public officials in Guiyang City, 40 patients with hypertension were selected. The experiment was started after Shaolin Ba Duan Jin has been practiced for seven days and the subjects had learned it. Experimental method: Frequency of subjects practicing Ba Duan Jin is 7 days a week, subjects practice once a day, practicing time is 6:00-7:30 am or 18:00 -19:30 pm, practicing lasts 1.5 hours each time (practicing has 3 groups, 14 minutes in each group;subjects rest 2 minutes between groups,;preparing part is 8 minutes;ending part is 5 minutes), record the blood pressure of the subjects before and after each experiment, and fill in the quality of life scale (WHOQOL-BREF scale) regularly for a period of 12 weeks. Questionnaire method: Fill in the quality of life scale every three weeks and measure heart rate and blood pressure before and after each exercise. Mathematical statistics: The paired sample t test was used to analyze the changes in blood pressure before and after the 12-week experiment. Results 1) The systolic and diastolic blood pressures of the subjects were significantly lower than before the experiment (P <0.01). 2) The WHOQOL-BREF scale after 12 weeks has improved significantly in all areas than before the experiment. Conclusions 1) Martial arts Ba Duan Jin has a good influence on the circulatory system of hypertensive patients. The performance is that the heart rate is slow and the systolic and diastolic blood pressures have a downward trend. 2) Martial arts Ba Duan Jin has significant improvement in the physiology, psychology, social relations, environment and other fields .

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the oral health and quality of life of athletes in combat sports.68 elite athletes consisting of 18 men and 50 women (Age =18,63±3,61) participated in the study. Data obtained in this research were collected on 15.03.2016. The population of the research consists of elite active combat athletes in Marmara region Turkey. five-point Likert type Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) and General Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI) applied to participants. The scales have subsections as Functional Limitations, pain and discomfort, psychologic factors and behavioral factors. “How do you describe your oral and dental health?” multiple choice question has been asked to understand the subjects’ perception on their oral and dental health. Also “How often do you brush your teeth?” multiple choice question has been asked to understand the subjects’ teeth brushing habit. Pearson Correlation test, Mann-Whitney U test and Kruskall Wallis test in IBM SPSS 20 Software was used to analyze the statistical data. OHIP-14 and GOHAI scores were determined as 26,80±5,93 and 20,61±5,40.There was a positively strong significant correlation between each OHIP-14 and GOHAI scores. There was a positively strong significant correlation between both scores and variables of self-reported oral health status and tooth brushing habit. No significant difference was found between OHIP-14 and GOHAI scores in education or gender variables. As a result, athletes did not report any serious oral health problems. Participants mostly evaluated their oral health as “fine”. The correlation between scales shows that both scales useful to get information about oral health status and oral health related quality of life. ÖzetBu çalışmanın amacı, mücadele sporcularının ağız sağlığı ve yaşam kalitelerini değerlendirmektir.Araştırma grubunu 18’i erkek 50’si kadın 68 elit sporcu (Yaş =18,63±3,61) oluşturdu.

Olympic combat sports are unconventional physical activity strategies to train middle-aged and older people with and without health problems. This systematic review aimed to assess the available body of published peer-reviewed articles related to the effects of Olympic combat sports interventions (boxing, fencing, judo, karate, taekwondo, wrestling) on health-related quality of life in adults aged 45 and older. The search was carried out in five generic databases until July 2021 and the protocol was registered in PROSPERO (code: CRD42021244161). The PRISMA guidelines were followed and the Downs and Black checklist was used to assessed the methodological quality of the studies. After reviewing 1,151 records, only seven studies met the inclusion criteria, adding 212 participants (43.4% female) with a mean age of 63.7 years. Six studies (two with middle-aged participants and four with older people) provided data to calculate the effect size (ES) in the Olympic combat sports groups (No research that used taekwondo or wrestling as an intervention modality was found). Three studies reported beneficial changes with a small ES for the total score (d < 0.40) of the health-related quality of life. Two studies reported a beneficial change with a small ES (d = 0.49) and strong ES (d = 4.45) for physical health. One study reported improvements with a small ES for emotional (d = 0.23) and functional (d = 0.26) well-being. In conclusion, interventions based on Olympic combat sports produce beneficial effects with a small and moderate ES on health-related quality of life in male and female aged 45 and older who are healthy participants, participants with Parkinson's disease, and participants with breast cancer.Systematic Review Registration:https://www.crd.york.ac.uk/prospero/, PROSPERO: CRD42021244161.
