This work presents a Dynatrace OneAgent extension for gathering NVIDIA GPU metrics using NVIDIA Management Library (NVML). The extension integrates GPU metrics into an industry-leading platform for Application Performance Management extending its capability of monitoring important business workloads to the GPU-oriented computational nodes. A practical approach for acquiring and processing NVML metrics via  Python bindings is described. The work also proposes and discusses implementation of helper applications for convenient simulation of performance problems in a multi-tier web application. These applications are then used in combination with OneAgent-based monitoring and appropriate configuration of Dynatrace platform for web application monitoring. Next, an end-to-end production-like scenarios are presented, which exemplify extension usefulness in test setup resembling a real world implementation. The extension has been released on GitHub under MIT license.

The main purpose of an application performance monitoring/management (APM) software is to ensure the highest availability, efficiency and security of applications. An APM software accomplishes the main goals through automation, measurements, analysis and diagnostics. Gartner specifies the three crucial capabilities of APM softwares. The first is an end-user experience monitoring for revealing the interactions of users with application and infrastructure components. The second is application discovery, diagnostics and tracing. The third key component is machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) powered data analytics for predictions, anomaly detection, event correlations and root cause analysis. Time series metrics, logs and traces are the three pillars of observability and the valuable source of information for IT operations. Accurate, scalable and robust time series forecasting and anomaly detection are the requested capabilities of the analytics. Approaches based on neural networks (NN) and deep learning gain an increasing popularity due to their flexibility and ability to tackle complex nonlinear problems. However, some of the disadvantages of NN-based models for distributed cloud applications mitigate expectations and require specific approaches. We demonstrate how NN-models, pretrained on a global time series database, can be applied to customer specific data using transfer learning. In general, NN-models adequately operate only on stationary time series. Application to nonstationary time series requires multilayer data processing including hypothesis testing for data categorization, category specific transformations into stationary data, forecasting and backward transformations. We present the mathematical background of this approach and discuss experimental results based on implementation for Wavefront by VMware (an APM software) while monitoring real customer cloud environments.

Elasticity and on-demand are significant characteristics that attract many customers to host their Internet applications in the cloud. They allow quick reacting to changing application needs by adding or releasing resources responding to the actual rather than to the projected demand. Nevertheless, neglecting the overhead of acquiring resources, which mainly is attributed to networking overhead, can result in periods of under-provisioning, leading to degrading the application performance. In this chapter, the authors study the possibility of mitigating the impact of resource provisioning overhead. They direct the study to an Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) provisioning model where application scalability is the customer’s responsibility. The research shows that understanding the application utilization models and a proper tuning of the scalability parameters can optimize the total cost and mitigate the impact of the overhead of acquiring resources on-demand.

In the 21st century, digital natives, born into a world of omnipresent technology, spend much of their lives online. However, many teachers still see the use of educational technologies as a challenge (e.g., Ertmer, 2005; Li, 2007). The authors propose that the familiarity and ubiquity of these media offer a valuable way to engage students in meaningful learning. In the last decade, the National Science Foundation has invested heavily in bringing technology into the K-12 classroom by funding an array of cyberlearning applications to investigate how they can transform student learning. Model My Watershed is one of those experimental platforms that integrates online learning with an understanding of the physical world within an interdisciplinary framework. This case study documents the development of this application from concept through implementation and beyond. It provides insights into the challenges of application design and deployment for those entering the world of cyberlearning design.

Contribution of Information Systems (IS) to business has been widely debated among both business scholars and practitioners. Even though a consistent body of literature has examined the problem over a time frame of more than 20 years, and a plethora of theoretical contributions has been produced, the issue of evaluating IS effectiveness remains unresolved. Starting from the assumption that real-world experiences differ from theoretical explications, and with the intent to contribute to IS Performance Management field bringing evidences from the reality, this chapter describes and discusses the design of an IS performance management system implemented by an insurance corporation.

The recent emergence of new IP-based services that require high bandwidth and low service latency such as voice over IP (VoIP), video sharing, and music streaming have motivated the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) to work on the all IP-based cellular networks called Evolved Packet System (EPS). It is challenging for EPS not only to meet the Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of new services but also to make sure the QoS of existing services not impacted. In this chapter, the authors will first present an overview of EPS, and then focus on the aspects of QoS principles and mechanisms in EPS. End-to-end QoS models have been developed to analyze the application performance in EPS. Simulation results have shown that VoIP service requires resource reservation to guarantee its QoS requirement, and e-mail service does not experience significant performance degradation even when assigned a low service priority and the system experiences short period congestion. However, web browsing performance may not be improved proportionally to the network bandwidth increase due to the inherent network probing procedure of the transport protocol.

Over the years the supply chain industry has been transforming to improve the end-to-end (production to delivery) process. Supply chain management (SCM) allows various industries to oversee and better handle how their product is manufactured and delivered. It allows them to track and identify the location of the product and to be more efficient in delivery. Integrating total asset visibility (TAV) technology into the supply chain structure can provide excellent visibility of a product. This kind of visibility complemented with various packaging schemes can assist in accommodating optimization strategies for visualizing the movement of a product throughout the entire supply chain pipeline. The chapter will define SCM, discuss TAV, review how transportation as well as optimization impacts SCM and TAV, and examine the role of packaging in the context of SCM and TAV.
