<div><strong>Purpose:</strong> The study was to examine the relationship between management development programs and the management styles used by junior executives and young managers.</div><div> </div><div><strong>Design/methodology/approach:</strong> Data was collected using survey forms and all the respondents were below 45 years old. They were either professionals or holding middle to higher level positions.</div><div> </div><div><strong>Findings:</strong> Only mentoring had significant relationships with all the seven management styles. Mentoring was also found as the only program which was significant predictor to all the management styles. Assessment programs were found having significant relationship with participative style with negative relationship. On-the-job development programs were only significantly related to two management styles. Delegating style was significantly related to all the management development programs. Ethical management style was only significant to mentoring.</div><div> </div><div><strong>Research implications:</strong> HR practitioners should emphasize the use of mentoring with systematic mentoring programs.</div><div> </div><div><strong>Research limitations:</strong> The correlation values among variables were weak-to-moderate and some variables suffered from low Cronbach’s alpha values.</div><div> </div><div><strong>Originality/value:</strong> The paper researched on the outcomes of management development programs by measuring the management styles as perceived by the program participants.  </div>

Teachers begin to experience symptoms of fatigue due to heavy workload characterized by working ineffectively in the classroom so that the interest of the students declined. This study aims to test whether there is relationship between self-regulation and burnout in teachers. The population was junior high school’s teacher. This study use population research, where all the population used as a sample. Researchers use all certified teachers in the school, participants are 35 teachers. The approach used is quantitative method. Data collected using self-regulation and burnout scales, and analyzed using pearson product moment correlation test. The results obtained from this study indicate that there is a significant relationship between self-regulation with burnout in teachers. Significant relationships are seen from the p-value of 0.017 and r value of -0.401. The r value indicates that the relationship between the two variables have a negative direction, meaning that the higher of self-regulation, the lower of burnout. Individual’s good self-regulation be able to cope stress and emotions, because of burnout arising drag on stress experienced by the individual.Abstrak: Guru mulai mengalami gejala kelelahan akibat beban kerja yang berat yang ditandai dengan kurang bekerja efektif didalam kelas sehingga minat kepada peserta didik menurun. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menguji apakah ada hubungan antara regulasi diri dengan burnout pada guru. Populasi penelitian ini adalah guru SMP. Penelitian ini menggunakan penelitian populasi, dimana semua populasi digunakan sebagai sampel penelitian. Peneliti menggunakan semua guru yang sudah sertifikasi di sekolah tersebut yang berjumlah 35 orang guru. Pendekatan yang digunakan ialah kuantitatif. Data dikumpulkan menggunakan skala regulasi diri dan burnout, dan dianalisis menggunakan uji korelasional pearson product moment. Hasil yang diperoleh dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa terdapat hubungan yang signifikan antara regulasi diri dengan burnout pada guru. Hubungan yang signifikan tersebut dilihat dari nilai p sebesar 0,017 dan nilai r sebesar -0,401. Nilai r tersebut menunjukkan bahwa hubungan kedua variabel memiliki arah negatif, artinya semakin tinggi regulasi diri maka semakin rendah burnout. Regulasi diri yang baik yang dimiliki individu akan mampu mengatasi stres dan emosi dalam dirinya, karena burnout timbul akibat stres yang berkepanjangan yang dialami individu.

AbstractThe purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationship between McGregor's Theory X and Y management styles and affective commitment through the mediating mechanism of the leader–member exchange (LMX). Adopting a multilevel perspective to explain the complex relations among variables, data were collected from 56 supervisors and 173 subordinates from yacht building companies in Turkey. The results indicated that the Theory Y management style related positively to affective commitment and LMX. In addition, the results indicated that LMX partially mediated the relationship between the Theory Y management style and affective commitment. However, the Theory X management style had no relationships with either LMX or affective commitment. Implications for future research and practice are discussed.

The research focus was to gain insight into the current employment processes practice and its impact on organizational image in the insurance organizations in Nigeria. The study investigated the relationship between employment processes and organisational image; examined the issues and challenges in organizational image and employment processes. In the course of conducting the study, 80 insurance employees were selected from the chosen 15 insurance organisations and 40 inhabitants in community where these organisations were located; and out of this 88 respondents responded properly representing 73%. The questionnaire was developed by using Likert five scales which consists of different questions on the variables in employment processes and organisational image such as recruitment and selection, job security, job design and responsibility, management style, working environment and job perception. In the study, statistical measures such as Z- test, mean and proportion analysis were used to examine the existing relationship between employment processes and organisational image. The findings reveals that recruitment and selection, job security and management styles have significant effect on the image of the organisation at 0.05 level of sig. while working environment was found to be on neutral level and job perception as well as job design and responsibility were not having significant effect at 0.05 level of sig. on the image of an organisation. It was recommended that there should be sound personnel policy to support job security and the recruitment and selection processes should be transparent, free of biases and fair to all and sundry so as to guaranty trust and confidence.

There have been many reports indicating the relationship between gardening and health or healthy lifestyles among adults in developed countries all over the world. However, Japanese evidence is lacking. The aim of this study was to clarify the relationship between community or home gardening and health status or a healthy lifestyle using a web-based survey with Japanese elderly living in the community. A survey was conducted to gather data from 500 gardeners and 500 nongardeners aged 60 to 69. As a result, significant relationships were shown between community gardening and exercise habits, physical activity, eating vegetables, and connections with neighbors. Moreover, the significant relationships between home gardening and the following items were indicated: Subjective happiness, exercise habits, physical activity, sitting time, eating breakfast, eating vegetables, eating balanced meals, and connections with neighbors. No item demonstrated a significant relationship with gardening frequency. A significant relationship was demonstrated between gardening duration and health problems affecting everyday life. Further significant relationships were shown between gardening with others and subjective happiness, having a reason for living. In conclusion, promising positive relationships between community or home gardening and health or healthy lifestyles were indicated.

Improving creativity in engineering design continues to be a challenge. The relationship between fixation and creativity within engineering is mixed, as engineers desire to be innovative, yet are usually working from their existing knowledge to redesign existing products. In the current study, we wanted to examine the influence of physical examples on originality and fixation at the freshmen and senior level in a Mechanical Engineering program. We compared concepts for garbage collection systems generated by two groups — one provided with an example product (Example group), and another who did not receive an example product (No Example group). Using metrics established in prior publications, we found that seniors had higher levels of originality than freshmen whether an example product was received or not, reinforcing our previous findings. Fixation scores were higher for the group that did have an example. Receiving an example product was not a predictor of originality on its own, but did interact with curriculum and fixation level. Within the group that received an example product, there was a negative relationship between fixation and originality, particularly for the seniors. Within the group that did not receive an example product, there was no significant relationship between fixation and originality. Further analysis of our results are required to delineate how not receiving an example product influences design approach in freshmen and senior engineering students.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to provide new empirical evidence on the relationship between social expenditure and poverty in Turkey. Design/methodology/approach There are voluminous studies in the literature and many of which contain condradictory results. The authors use panel error correction models and employ Turkish statistical territorial units data (26 regions) covering the period 2004-2011 in the analysis. Findings The authors have found that in the short run, there is a negative relationship between social expenditure and poverty, as expected. In the long run, however, there exists a positive relation between them. The authors utilize expenditure on education as one component of social expenditure, and the authors obtain a negative relationship between education expenditure and poverty, both in the short run and in the long run. Social implications Poverty is an important social problem that more studies on this subject should examine various aspects and find policies to alleviate it. Originality/value Literature on poverty and social spending are growing and their results are contradictory. However, this paper clearly and significantly provides new empirical evidence on the effect of social spending on reducing poverty using Turkish data. This kind of study is hardly found for developing countries like Turkey. It contributes to the literature.

Abundance data from a 6-year study (1988–1993) of harbour seals (Phoca vitulina) were used to control for seasonal changes in haulout behaviour and assess the effect of temperature and other weather conditions on haulout numbers at a site in Scotland. A significant relationship between Julian day and haulout numbers was consistent between years. In some years, there was also a significant relationship between ambient temperature and haulout numbers, but examination of the residuals around the relationship between haulout numbers and Julian day revealed no evidence for a consistent effect of temperature, wind speed, or wind-chill adjusted temperatures. A weak negative relationship between haulout numbers and both precipitation and cloud cover did exist, but these variables explained little of the variation in seal numbers.

Purpose – Prior research has confirmed the usefulness of both formal and informal protection mechanisms for governing knowledge flows. However, there is lack of research on the motivation and needs driving firms in their choice of mechanisms for each situation. The aim of this paper is to examine the reasons for choosing formal or informal mechanisms. Design/methodology/approach – The hypotheses were tested on a sample of 209 companies engaged in R&D. A Partial Least Squares was used for the analyses. Findings – This study identifies statistically significant relationships between the protection need and the firm's strategy. The results indicate that there is variance in the use of mechanisms when there is a specific motivation for seeking protection, and when the firm faces difficulties related to protection issues. Research limitations/implications – The data were gathered in a single country. The results may be different if practices in a culture based more on informal relations, with less efficient patent system, were investigated. Practical implications – The study provides managers with useful information on the informal protection of knowledge and innovations when resources are limited. In particular, it helps them to identify situations in which informal mechanisms are potentially more useful. Originality/value – This study adds to the literature by studying quantitatively the relationship between the recognised need for protection and the choice of formal and/or informal protection as a strategy. It combines both formal and informal mechanisms. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is one of the few studies examining HRM-related protection mechanisms.
