Total antioxidant status (TAS), activity of antioxidant enzymes - superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx), concentrations of non-enzymatic antioxidants - ascorbic acid (AA) and reduced glutathione (GSH) as well as concentration of lipid peroxidation marker - malonyldialdehyde (MDA) were determined in heart and femoral muscle of rats receiving different selecompounds (inorganic selenite and organic selenosemicarbazide of chain structure and selenazoline of ring structure). Chain selenosemicarbazide markedly decreased TAS values vs. control without Se-supplementation in heart. GPx was significantly depressed vs. control in heart of animals receiving organic selenium. Ring selenazoline decreased heart AA, whereas selenosemicarbazide increased heart GSH. Inorganic selenite diminished femoral muscle GSH. Selenium supplementation distinctly inhibited process of lipid peroxidation - MDA was decreased in Se-given animals, particularly in heart. As organic ring selenocompound depressed heart MDA to the highest degree, did not impair total antioxidant status and caused no disturbance of antioxidant barrier in femoral muscle, it could be suggested that further research may reveal possibilities of its application as a Se-supplement.

Background and Objective: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a disorder of the musculoskeletal system resulting in worsening of life condition. The research revealed the involvement of oxidative stress into both OA pathogenesis and the effects of therapeutic agents applied in OA cases. The activities of the most important antioxidant enzymes, namely superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), catalase (CAT) and total antioxidant status (TAS), in blood of the knee OA patients were studied, with the aim of clarifying which enzymatic antioxidants are involved into osteoarthritis (OA)-related oxidative stress and whether any compensatory effects occur. The results were additionally analyzed with regard to gender. Methods: Whole blood SOD (U/mL), plasma GPx (U/L) and CAT (U/mL) activities as well as plasma TAS (mmol/L)) in knee OA patients were investigated. Sixty-seven patients (49 females and 18 males) with primary knee OA were enrolled. The control comprised 21 subjects (10 females and 11 males) free of osteoarthritis or inflammation. Results: TAS was decreased in OA subjects (4.39 ± 0.53 vs. 4.70 ± 0.60), with this effect being more significant in OA females (4.31 ± 0.51 vs. 5.02 ± 0.54). GPx was depressed in all OA patients (518 ± 176 vs. 675 ± 149). In both genders, GPx was decreased, significantly in males (482 ± 185 vs. 715 ± 105). SOD was decreased in all OA patients (109 ± 32 vs. 127 ± 42). CAT showed no difference in all OA subjects vs. control, while in OA females it was depleted (20.2 (11.6–31.6) vs. 38.5 (27.9–46.6)) and in OA men it increased (26.9 (23.3–46.5) vs. 14.0 (7.0–18.6)). Conclusions: The obtained results suggest that in men some compensatory mechanisms towards OA-related oxidative stress occurred. Based on the obtained data, the introduction of antioxidant supplements into OA therapy could be suggested with further research concerning the choice of agents.

We investigated the antioxidant action of a solid preparation of Xingnaojing (XNJ) and ascorbic acid (AA) in stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSP). The total antioxidant states in the plasma, systolic blood pressure, and heart rate were measured every 2 weeks, and lipid peroxidation, expressed as thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances in plasma, was measured in the 6th week. The results showed that AA and XNJ significantly increased the total antioxidant status in plasma and reduced malondialdehyde in the plasma. These data suggest that during 6-week administration, XNJ has antioxidant action on SHRSP, which may relate to its generalized inhibition of lipid peroxidation and promotion of the total antioxidant state. These results demonstrated that orally treated XNJ has an antioxidant effect on SHRSP plasma.

The aim of this paper was to compare the effects of pulp and kernel oils ofCanarium odontophyllumMiq. (CO) on lipid profile, lipid peroxidation, and oxidative stress of healthy rabbits. The oils are rich in SFAs and MUFAs (mainly palmitic and oleic acids). The pulp oil is rich in polyphenols. Male New Zealand white (NZW) rabbits were fed for 4 weeks on a normal diet containing pulp (NP) or kernel oil (NK) of CO while corn oil was used as control (NC). Total cholesterol (TC), HDL-C, LDL-c and triglycerides (TG) levels were measured in this paper. Antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidise), thiobarbiturate reactive substances (TBARSs), and plasma total antioxidant status (TAS) were also evaluated. Supplementation of CO pulp oil resulted in favorable changes in blood lipid and lipid peroxidation (increased HDL-C, reduced LDL-C, TG, TBARS levels) with enhancement of SOD, GPx, and plasma TAS levels. Meanwhile, supplementation of kernel oil caused lowering of plasma TC and LDL-C as well as enhancement of SOD and TAS levels. These changes showed that oils of CO could be beneficial in improving lipid profile and antioxidant status as when using part of normal diet. The oils can be used as alternative to present vegetable oil.
