Abstract. Wahyudi A, Syukur M. 2021. Multi-location evaluation of yield component character and proximate analysis of cowpea grown in Lampung Province, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 22: 4246-4253. Cowpea has the potential to be developed in eastern Indonesia, especially Sulawesi, West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, and Maluku with an altitude of less than 1000 m above sea level. Cowpea is also able to adapt to acid soils, making it possible to be developed in the dry acid soils of Sumatra and Kalimantan. To identify genotypes of high-yielding cowpea suitable for lowland areas, it is necessary to evaluate the multi-location of superior cowpea genotypes in different agroecology in the region. Multi-site evaluation trials of plant cultivars are of great importance given the obvious inconsistencies in genotype performance across different environments. This study used materials consisting of 4 varieties produced by the IPB University (Albina, Tampi, Uno, Arghavan) and 3 varieties from Balitkabi (KT-1, KT-7, and KT-9). This research is part of the preparation for the release of cowpea new varieties. The statistical analysis of the new varieties (Albina, Tampi, Uno, and Arghavan) compared with control (KT-1, KT-7, and KT-9) showed significant differences in seed productivity, carbohydrate content in old seeds, flowering, harvesting age in young pods and dry seeds. This result indicated that Albina, Tampi, Uno, and Arghavan varieties were potential for the release of new cowpea varieties, especially in the lowland areas.

Topsoils from 16 arable Cambisols developed from sand, loam and silt were used to study soil ability to nitrate reduction under flooding conditions. The strongest drop of redox potential (Eh) was observed during the first day of soil flooding. Decreasing tendency in pH values was observed of alkaline and neutral soils, and an increase in pH of acid and strongly acid soils, accompanied by a fall in Eh values. Redox potential was negatively correlated with the pH values (R2 = 0.3041; <i>p</i> < 0.001). The fall of NO3&minus; varied from 20 to 100% depending on the type of soil and on the time of incubation. With a decrease of nitrate content within the range from 100 to 10 mg NO3&minus;-N/kg, the value of redox potential decreased from 250 to 190 mV. The highest reduction of nitrates coincided with Eh values within a narrow range between 200 and 210 mV. Statistical analysis of redox potential in the function of the content of nitrates showed a curvilinear relation (R2 = 0.3823; <i>p</i> < 0.001).

Alfalfa blue is a perennial, multi-cut herbaceous plant. The expansion of the lucerne sowing areas does not occur due to the lack of sufficient sowing material, which in turn is due to low seed productivity. The solution to this problem is possible only when moving to new varieties with high potential for seed yield and introducing improved technologies. Our article shows the characteristic of new varieties of  alfalfa of the Ershovsky selection. New varieties Serena and Natalie had the highest seed harvest rates in 9 years. Natalie variety on average for 9 years (2009-2017) by the number of brushes on one stem, the number of seeds in the bean and the number of beans in the brush was higher than the Uzen variety-standard by 5.0 respectively; 11.0 and 6.0%. According to the correlation analysis of the indicators, the crop of seeds and seeds in the bean is significant positive.

Abstract. Detecting the atmospheric drivers of the Benguela Upwelling Systems is essential to understand its present variability and its past and future changes. We present a statistical analysis of an ocean-only simulation driven by observed atmospheric fields over the last decades with the aim of identifying the large-scale atmospheric drivers of upwelling variability and trends. The simulation is found to reproduce well the seasonal cycle of upwelling intensity, with a maximum in the June-to-August season in North Benguela and in the December-to-February season in South Benguela. The statistical analysis of the interannual variability of upwelling focuses on its relationship to atmospheric variables (sea level pressure, 10 m-wind, wind stress). The relationship between upwelling and the atmospheric variables differ somewhat in the two regions, but generally, the correlation patterns reflect the common atmospheric pattern favoring upwelling: southerly wind/wind stress, strong subtropical anticyclone, and an ocean-land sea level pressure gradient. In addition, the statistical link between upwelling and large-scale climate variability modes was analyzed. The El Niño Southern Oscillation and the Antarctic Oscillation exert some influence on austral summer upwelling velocities in South Benguela. The decadal evolution and the long-term trends of upwelling and of ocean-minus-land air pressure gradient do not agree with Bakun's hypothesis that anthropogenic climate change should generally intensify coastal upwelling.
