<p>The fundamental character of the Mg-Al mixed oxide (Mgn(Al)O), derived from the Mg-Al hydrotalcite (MgnAl-CO3-HT), where n corresponds to the Mg/Al molar ratio (n: 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5 and 4), was studied by using the adsorption of phenol as a probe acid molecule. The hydrotalcite precursors were prepared by the coprecipitation method. Their derived mixed oxides were obtained by thermal treatment at 450°C in a flow of air. The resulting solids were characterized by X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis             (TG-DTA), nitrogen physisorption (BET) and phenol chemisorption. The phenol adsorption followed by UV-Visible spectrophotometry shows that the basicity increases with the Mg/Al molar ratio, such that maximum quantity of phenol adsorbed (Qads = 0.54 mmol/g cat) was obtained with the mixed oxide derived from the Mg-Al hydrotalcite of Mg/Al molar ratio equal to 3.5.</p>

The p-n junction photocatalysts, p-CuO (at. 0-25%)/n-ZnO nanocomposite were prepared through hydrothermal method without using any organic solvent or surfactant. The as-prepared samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-Ray spectroscopy, and UV-vis spectroscopy. The results demonstrated that the CuO/ZnO nanocomposite presented a two-dimensional morphology composed of sheet-like ZnO nanostructures adorned with CuO nanoparticles. The photocatalytic activity of CuO/ZnO with different Cu/Zn molar rations and pure ZnO synthesized by the identical synthetic route were evaluated by degrading methylene blue (MB) dye under UV-visible light irradiation. The CuO/ZnO with Cu/Zn molar ratio of 4% exhibits the highest photocatalytic activity compared that of the other photocatalysts under the identical conditions. It is mainly attributed to the increased charge separation rate in the nanocomposite and the extended photo-responding range.

Fe-doped TiO2nanotubes (Fe-TNTs) have been prepared by ultrasonic-assisted hydrothermal method. The structure and composition of the as-prepared TiO2nanotubes were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and UV-Visible absorption spectroscopy. Their photocatalytic activities were evaluated by the degradation of MO under visible light. The UV-visible absorption spectra of the Fe-TNT showed a red shift and an enhancement of the absorption in the visible region compared to the pure TNT. The Fe-TNTs were provided with good photocatalytic activities and photostability and under visible light irradiation, and the optimum molar ratio of Ti : Fe was found to be 100 : 1 in our experiments.

AbstractThe title compound was prepared by reaction, in aqueous solution, of Tl2CO3 and H2C2O4·2H2O in a molar ratio of 1:2. Its crystal structure was solved by X-ray diffraction methods. It crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/a with Z = 2 molecules per unit cell. The oxalic acid molecule and the oxalate anion are planar, residing on crystallographic inversion centers, and linked to each other by strong O–H···O hydrogen bonds giving rise to a polymeric structure. The Tl(I) ion is in a distorted polyhedral coordination with nine neighboring O atoms, five of oxalate anions and four others of oxalic acid molecules. The FTIR and FT-Raman spectra of the compound were also recorded and are briefly discussed.

Seven mixed hydroxides of magnesium and aluminium were prepared, and phase and structural changes accompanying their dehydration were investigated by differential thermal analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, and X-ray diffraction techniques. The differential thermal analysis curves possess 2 peaks corresponding to those of parent hydroxides together with a new peak, and the thermogravimetric analysis curves show slight inflections. X-ray diffraction patterns of the mixed hydroxides possess the characteristic lines of the parent hydroxides together with three to five new intense lines which might indicate the formation of a double hydroxide. When the mixed hydroxides are progressively heated they give rise to products possessing patterns which first become diffuse and ultimately pass mainly into the spinel pattern.Adsorption isotherms of cyclohexane and benzene were measured on the mixed hydroxides and their dehydration products. Specific surface areas calculated by the application of the Brunauer, Emmett, Teller (B.E.T.) equation are in general in good agreement for the two adsorbates. The surface area increases with rise of dehydration temperature to a maximum at 500–600 °C and then decreases with further rise in temperature. This behavior is common to crystalline oxide systems and may be ascribed to the intermingling of decomposition, re-crystallization, and sintering processes. Variations in the molecular ratio of the mixed oxides (as much as 20-fold), and in the method of preparation, do not much alter the surface area.

Nanocomposite Fe3O4-CuO-ZnO with different molar ratio of Fe3O4:CuO:ZnO were synthesized using sol-gel method and characterized by X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscope, UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and vibrating sample magnetometer. The characterization results manifested that the combination of Fe3O4, CuO and ZnO nanoparticles was successful. The photocatalytic activity of nanocomposite with the molar ratio of 1:1:5 was more effective in the degradation of methylene blue under UV light irradiation than pure Fe3O4, CuO, ZnO. The role of photoactive species involved in the photocatalytic reaction was studied and found that holes play the most important role in photodegradation of methylene blue.

Ce-Zr-La-Sr mixed oxides, with different Sr contents, were prepared by the sol-gel method. In a flow-system microreactor, the reduction properties and the oxygen storage capacity (OSC) of the Ce-Zr-La-Sr mixed oxides were investigated by a temperature programmed reduction (TPR) and a pulse technique. It was shown that the properties of the Ce-Zr-La mixed oxides depend on the Sr content and that the optimum Sr content in the Ce-Zr-La-Sr mixed oxide is 3 mol%. The Ce-Zr-La-Sr mixed oxides doped with 3 mol% Sr (Ce0.52Zr0.4La0.05Sr0.03O1.945) has the largest specific surface area and better reduction properties and oxygen storage capacity in comparison to the other investigated samples. The XRD results of the Ce-Zr-La-Sr mixed oxides showed that their X-ray diffraction patterns are well in agreement with that of fluorite-type CeO2 with Sr ions incorporated into the Ce-Zr-La mixed oxide structures. With increasing calcination temperature, the intensity of the X-ray diffraction peaks increased, but no new peaks were observed. All of these indicate that the synthesized samples had good thermal stability.

Ag-TiO2@MnO2 nanoparticles prepared by two-step hydrothermal method were characterized by X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Brunauer-Emmett- Teller (BET) and UV-Visible diffuse reflectance spectra (UV-Vis DRS). The degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) and 2, 4-dichlorophenol (2, 4-DCP) under visible light (λ≥420 nm) were used as probe reactions to investigate the photocatalytic activity of Ag-TiO2@MnO2. The results showed that the basic structure of Ag-TiO2@MnO2 was composed of TiO2 with anatase crystalline structure and α-MnO2 with cubic crysatalline structure. The optimal molar ratio nAg/nMn was 6%. Ag-TiO2@MnO2 had the highest photocatalytic activity in neutral medium because of composing and modifying of Ag. The decolorization rate of RhB reached 100% after 600 min and the mineralization rate of 2, 4-DCP was 47.0% after 30 hr. The oxidation process was dominated by the •OH generated in the system.

Emission of nitric oxide represents a serious environmental problem since it contributes to the formation of acid rain and photochemical smog. Potassium-modified Co-Mn-Al mixed oxide is an effective catalyst for NO decomposition. However, there are problems related to the thermal instability of potassium species and a high content of toxic and expensive cobalt. The reported research aimed to determine whether these shortcomings can be overcome by replacing cobalt with magnesium. Therefore, a series of Co-Mg-Mn-Al mixed oxides with different Co/Mg molar ratio and promoted by various content of potassium was investigated. The catalysts were thoroughly characterized by atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS), temperature-programmed reduction by hydrogen (TPR-H2), temperature-programmed desorption of CO2 (TPD-CO2), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), N2 physisorption, species-resolved thermal alkali desorption (SR-TAD), and tested in direct NO decomposition with and without the addition of oxygen and water vapor. Partial substitution of magnesium for cobalt did not cause an activity decrease when the optimal molar ratio of K/Co on the normalized surface area was maintained; it means that the portion of expensive and toxic cobalt can be successfully replaced by magnesium without any decrease in catalytic activity.

A series of copper oxide supported on Fe3O4/ZnO with molar ratio of Fe3O4:ZnO:CuO varies from 1:1:1 to 1:1:5 were prepared by sol-gel method. X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscope, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and vibrating sample magnetometer were used to characterize the as prepared Fe3O4/ZnO/CuO hybrid nanoparticles. The results show that Fe3O4/ZnO/CuO hybrid nanoparticles consist of cubic spinel Fe3O4, hexagonal wurtzite ZnO and monoclinic CuO. All prepared samples show ferromagnetic behavior. The photocatalytic activities of these hybrid nanoparticles under visible light irradiation were evaluated by the degradation of malachite green. The results revealed that hybrid nanoparticles exhibited higher photocatalytic activities than pure nanoparticles.
