Recently, manganese oxides (MnOx)/cerium(IV) oxide (CeO2) composites have attracted widespread attention for the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of nitrogen oxides (NOx) with ammonia (NH3), which exhibit outstanding catalytic performance owing to unique features, such as a large oxygen storage capacity, excellent low-temperature activity, and strong mechanical strength. The intimate contact between the components can effectively accelerate the charge transfer to enhance the electron–hole separation efficiency. Nevertheless, MnOx/CeO2 still reveals some deficiencies in the practical application process because of poor thermal stability, and a low reduction efficiency. Constructing MnOx/CeO2 with other semiconductors is the most effective strategy to further improve catalytic performance. In this article, we discuss progress in the field of MnOx/CeO2-based ternary composites with an emphasis on the SCR of NOx by NH3. Recent progress in their fabrication and application, including suitable examples from the relevant literature, are analyzed and summarized. In addition, the interaction mechanisms between MnOx/CeO2 catalysts and NOx pollutants are comprehensively dissected. Finally, the review provides basic insights into prospects and challenges for the advancement of MnOx/CeO2-based ternary catalysts.

In this chapter the main challenges for the postharvest management of fresh produce are summarised. Key areas where the use of new smart technologies can improve crop management are explored, starting with how environmental sensors can be integrated into internet of things (IoT) systems with potential for use in the fresh produce supply chain. The next section summarises how the implementation of low oxygen storage environments is being refined through the use of dynamic controlled atmosphere systems incorporating sensor technologies. Modified atmosphere packaging and the developing field of active and intelligent packaging for fresh produce is then discussed. The chapter ends with future options for how smart technologies may develop in this sector.

A series of Fe2O3@LSF (La0.8Sr0.2FeO3−δ perovskite) core-shell materials (CSM) was prepared by infiltration of LSF precursors gel containing various complexants and their mixtures to nanocrystalline aggregates of hematite followed by thermal treatment. The content of LSF phase and amount of carboxyl groups in complexant determine the percent coverage of iron oxide core with the LSF shell. The most conformal coating core-shell material was prepared with citric acid as the complexant, contained 60 wt% LSF with 98% core coverage. The morphology of the CSM was studied by HRTEM-EELS combined with SEM-FIB for particles cross-sections. The reactivity of surface oxygen species and their amounts were determined by H2-TPR, TGA-DTG, the oxidation state of surface oxygen ions by XPS. It was found that at complete core coverage with perovskite shell, the distribution of surface oxygen species according to redox reactivity in CSM resemble pure LSF, but its lattice oxygen storage capacity is 2–2.5 times higher. At partial coverage, the distribution of surface oxygen species according to redox reactivity resembles that in iron oxide.

Elaboration of Pd-supported catalysts for catalytic combustion is, nowadays, considered as an imperative task to reduce the emissions of methane. This study provides new insight into the method of deposition, chemical state of Pd and oxygen storage capability of transition metal ions and their effects on the catalytic reactivity of supported catalysts for the combustion of methane. The catalyst with nominal composition La(Co0.8Ni0.1Fe0.1)0.85Pd0.15O3 was supported on SiO2-modified/γ-alumina using two synthetic procedures: (i) aerosol assisted chemical vapor deposition (U-AACVD) and (ii) wet impregnation (Imp). A comparative analysis shows that a higher catalytic activity is established for supported catalyst obtained by wet impregnation, where the PdO-like phase is well dispersed and the transition metal ions display a high oxygen storage capability. The reaction pathway over both catalysts proceeds most probably through Mars–van Krevelen mechanism. The supported catalysts are thermally stable when they are aged at 505 °C for 120 h in air containing 1.2 vol.% water vapor. Furthermore, the experimentally obtained data on La(Co0.8Ni0.1Fe0.1)0.85Pd0.15O3—based catalyst, supported on monolithic substrate VDM®Aluchrom Y Hf are simulated by using a two-dimensional heterogeneous model for monolithic reactor in order to predict the performance of an industrial catalytic reactor for abatement of methane emissions.

Marine mammals such as northern elephant seals (NES) routinely experience hypoxemia and ischemia-reperfusion events to many tissues during deep dives with no apparent adverse effects. Adaptations to diving include increased antioxidants and elevated oxygen storage capacity associated with high hemoprotein content in blood and muscle. The natural turnover of heme by heme oxygenase enzymes (encoded by HMOX1 and HMOX2) produces endogenous carbon monoxide (CO), which is present at high levels in NES blood and has been shown to have cytoprotective effects in laboratory systems exposed to hypoxia. To understand how pathways associated with endogenous CO production and signaling change across ontogeny in diving mammals, we measured muscle CO and baseline expression of 17 CO-related genes in skeletal muscle and whole blood of three age classes of NES. Muscle CO levels approached those of animals exposed to high exogenous CO, increased with age, and were significantly correlated with gene expression levels. Muscle expression of genes associated with CO production and antioxidant defenses (HMOX1, BVR, GPX3, PRDX1) increased with age and was highest in adult females, while that of genes associated with protection from lipid peroxidation (GPX4, PRDX6, PRDX1, SIRT1) was highest in adult males. In contrast, muscle expression of mitochondrial biogenesis regulators (PGC1A, ESRRA, ESRRG) was highest in pups, while genes associated with inflammation (HMOX2, NRF2, IL1B) did not vary with age or sex. Blood expression of genes involved in regulation of inflammation (IL1B, NRF2, BVR, IL10) was highest in pups, while HMOX1, HMOX2 and pro-inflammatory markers (TLR4, CCL4, PRDX1, TNFA) did not vary with age. We propose that ontogenetic upregulation of baseline HMOX1 expression in skeletal muscle of NES may, in part, underlie increases in CO levels and expression of genes encoding antioxidant enzymes. HMOX2, in turn, may play a role in regulating inflammation related to ischemia and reperfusion in muscle and circulating immune cells. Our data suggest putative ontogenetic mechanisms that may enable phocid pups to transition to a deep-diving lifestyle, including high baseline expression of genes associated with mitochondrial biogenesis and immune system activation during postnatal development and increased expression of genes associated with protection from lipid peroxidation in adulthood.

Ni-cermet anode demonstrates excellent catalytic activity and electrical conductivity but suffers from carbon deposition issue. To utilize Ni-cermet anode while preventing carbon deposition, a synergic strategy is employed to design anode electrode. In particular, Zr is incorporated into Ce0.8Sm0.2O2-δ lattice to tailor oxygen storage and catalytic properties of Ni-Ce0.8-xSm0.2ZrxO2-δ anode for improving electrochemical oxidizations of various fuel species. An inert thick YSZ microtubular substrate with radially well-aligned microchannels open at the inner surface is used to support multi thin functional layers of solid oxide cell, i.e., Ni current collector, Ni-Ce0.8-xSm0.2ZrxO2-δ anode, YSZ/SDC electrolyte, and LSCF cathode. The thick YSZ substrate is able to inhibit the ratio of fuel to product gases in the thin anode functional layer, which favors the prevention of carbon buildup in the thin anode layer when synergistically combined with Ni-Ce0.8-xSm0.2ZrxO2-δ anode material. The microchannels embedded in the YSZ substrate can also avoid too much dilutions of the fuel in the anode functional layer. The cell is fabricated and tested with both hydrogen and methane as the fuel. A short-term test is conducted with methane as fuel and good stability is obtained. The fundamental mechanisms for the prevention of carbon buildup in anode functional layer are also discussed.
