Objective. This study analyses the history of the "Premios Nacionales de Investigación", a suite of awards for scientific research organised by the Spanish government, from the creation of the first awards in 1982 to 2019 and from the perspective of gender, in order to identify differences and similarities between the awards given to men and to women. Methodology. The study describes and compares the awards using the five indicators award name, area of research, recipient, recipient gender and award money. To determine the scope, visibility and impact of the awards, the study also examines the award winners' presence in Google Scholar using the four indicators presence, citations, h-index and i10-index. Results. The overall results reveal a persistent and pronounced gender gap. Of the 113 awards granted in the period under study, 102 (92.3%) went to men, and of the 1,340,649 citations counted in Google Scholar, only 4.7% were of women authors. The study concludes that women are clearly under-represented in Spain's national awards for scientific research, although when the data are related to visibility in Google Scholar, the results regarding the dissemination of research by women is more promising.

The results of scientific research and development have become the basis for the development of the economy, the most important factor in increasing its competitiveness, the foundation of modern technologies. Therefore, the problem of effective organization of scientific research and the effectiveness of their financing is extremely urgent. The study of the evolution of organizational forms of science allows us to conclude that in firms that do not have government funding, scientific research at the Nobel level is often carried out. The story of the creation of one of these organizations, the world famous Bell Labs corporation, which is a real incubator of progressive scientific and technical ideas, is told. Over the years, Bell Labs employees have made a number of grandiose discoveries: the detection of cosmic radio emission, the invention of a point-contact transistor, quartz clocks, charge-coupled devices, the creation of information theory, the UNIX operating system, programming languages C, C ++, etc.Considerable attention is paid to describing the scientific and technical results of Bell Labs employees who have become Nobel, Turing, Emmy and Grammy laureates, as well as holders of the US National Medal of Technology and Innovation and the IEEE Medal of Honor. In conclusion, some other scientific achievements of Bell Labs employees that have not received the above awards are discussed. The experience of studying the history of the creation and functioning of this company can be useful when organizing innovative research centers in our country.

This work analyzes a previously unexplored part of the history of Russian lacquer miniature painting, which began more than two hundred years ago, but not all of its pages have been studied and elucidated. Few people know that from the seventies of the twentieth century until 2000 there was an artistic craft of the Lipetsk miniature lacquer painting, the founders of which were the miniaturists of Kholui. The paper reveals the unique experience and the school and production crisis. The data obtained in the framework of the presented scientific research were based on the study of the history of the emergence and development of the production of artistic handicrafts, analysis of the crisis and the reasons for the decline of school in their stereotypical and individual associative connections, fixed by specific conclusions about the unique experience of creating artistic handicrafts in isolation from the places of existence and the reasons of its loss. The obtained data make it possible to understand how to avoid many problematic moments within the system of artistic crafts and the tendencies of their modern development. The research nature of the work is expressed in the proposed views and conclusions that draw upon the archival base. In general, the conclusions of this scientific study contribute to the systematization of the analysis of historical experience, the results of which may be of interest in the space of Russian national culture and be used both in educational courses in the field of decorative and applied arts and in artistic and production activities.

Abstract This paper links the history of the Canadian Commission of Conservation (1909-1921) to the creation of the National Research Council through the fight between the two organizations for federal funds in scientific research. In my view, the Commission of Conservation (or COC) was abolished in 1921 because it persisted in advocating conservation, an expression of early 20th century environmentalism, in a world which was no longer interested in this issue.

This article investigates the trajectory of the Grêmio Dramático, Recreativo e Literário Elite da Liberdade (the Liberdade Elite Guild of Drama, Recreation, and Literature), a black club active in São Paulo, Brazil, from 1919 to 1927. The aim is to reconstruct aspects of the club’s history in light of its educational discourse on civility, which was used as a strategy to promote modern virtues in the black milieu. By appropriating the precepts of civility, Elite da Liberdade helped construct a positive black identity, enabled the creation of bonds of solidarity among its members, and made itself a place of resistance and struggle for social inclusion, recognition, and citizens’ rights.

Feminist authors have long been trying to alter the patriarchal structure of the Western society through different aspects. One of these aspects, if not the strongest, is the struggle to overcome centuries long dominance of male authors who have created a masculine history, culture and literature. As recent works of women authors reveal, the strongest possibility of actually achieving an equalitarian society lies beneath the chance of rewriting the history of Western literature. Since the history of Western literature relies on dichotomies that are reminiscences of modernity, the solution to overcome the inequality between the two sexes seems to be to rewrite the primary sources that have influenced the cultural heritage of literature itself. The most dominant dichotomies that shape this literary heritage are represented through the bonds between the concepts of women/man and nature/culture. As one of the most influential epics that depict these dichotomies, Homer's Odysseus reveals how poetry strengthens the authority of the male voice. In order to define the ideal "man", Homer uses a wide scope of animal imagery while forming the identities of male characters. Margaret Atwood, on the other hand, is not contended with Homer's poem in that it never narrates the story from the side of women. As a revisionist mythmaker, Atwood takes the famous story of Odysseus, yet this time presents it from the perspective of Penelope, simultaneously playing on the animal imagery. Within this frame, I intend to explore in this paper how the animal imagery in Homer's most renowned Odysseus functions as a reinforcing tool in the creation of masculine identities and how Margaret Atwood's The Penelopiad defies this formation of identities with the aim of narrating the story from the unheard side, that of the women who are eminently present yet never heard.

Abstract The article first surveys Greek interpretations of the creation of the Russian Holy Synod by Peter the Great. It provides a critical assessment of the historiographical paradigm offered by N.F. Kapterev for the analysis of Greek-Russian relations in the early modern period. Finally, it proposes that scholars should focus on a Greek history of Greek-Russian relations as a complement and possibly corrective to the Kapterev paradigm.
