This volume summarizes the present status of research in the field of organic and inorganic boron chemistry, presented by the invited speakers at the 12th International Meeting on Boron Chemistry (IMEBORON-XII), held in Sendai, Japan, 11-15 September 2005. IMEBORON-XII consisted of 1 plenary lecture, 22 invited lectures, 24 keynote lectures, 48 short oral presentations, and 99 poster presentations. In all, 280 chemists contributed to a truly international meeting, with participants representing China, Czech Republic, Germany, Israel, Japan, Mexico, Poland, Russia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States.The presentations at IMEBORON-XII covered all aspects of boron chemistry including theoretical studies, synthetic methods of organic and inorganic boron compounds, novel molecular structures, application of organic and inorganic boron compounds to organic synthesis as catalysts or as reagents, medicinal applications, and creation of new materials (liquid crystals, supramolecular clusters, nanocylinders, molecular electronic devices, nanomachines, ceramics, etc.). Not only the distinguished senior members of the boron community, but also young boron chemists took an active part in the conference. Not only traditional boron chemistry, but also new evolving research areas of boron chemistry were presented. Accordingly, I feel that a new generation of both researchers and research fields is coming in boron chemistry. A selection of the invited contributions to IMEBORON-XII is presented in the 14 papers in this issue.The importance of scientific exchange in this field was recognized during IMEBORON-XII. Therefore, the continuation of this series of conferences was discussed, and the venue for IMEBORON-XIII in 2008 will be organized by Prof. F. The 14th International Meeting on Boron Chemistry (IMEBORON-XIV) was held in Niagara Falls, Canada in 2011 and was attended by 270 participants from 18 countries. The 19 articles in this month's Pure and Applied Chemistry (PAC) are derived from the research presented at the conference, which stimulated lively discussion and facilitated new collaborations.The conference was divided into three sections representing organic, inorganic, and medicinal boron chemistry. The participants enjoyed the three plenary lectures from Profs. Holger Braunschweig, Fred Hawthorne, and Varinder K. Aggarwal as well as 141 oral and 111 poster presentations.We would like to acknowledge the direction and support given by the Scientific Committee (Profs. The 12th International Symposium on Novel Aromatic Compounds (ISNA-12) was held in Awaji Island, Japan, on 22-27 July 2007. The IUPAC-sponsored symposium was organized by the local committee, Prof. Yoshito Yobe (Osaka University: chair), Prof. Masahiko Iyoda (Tokyo Metropolitan University: vice-chair), and Prof. Koichi Komatsu (Fukui University of Technology: program chair), and jointly by the Science Council of Japan and the Chemical Society of Japan (CSJ). The symposium was established by Prof. Tetsuo Nozoe in 1970 as the International Symposium on Nonbenzenoid Aromatic Compounds, and this is the third ISNA held in Japan.The aim of this symposium is to elucidate fundamental principles of synthesis and properties of novel aromatic compounds, and to extend the application of π-conjugated systems in general to a wide area of molecular science. The special topics discussed during the symposium include:- synthesis of aromatic compounds- theoretical and structural aspects of aromatic compounds- supramolecular chemistry of aromatic compounds- molecular switches and devices- functions of π-conjugated systemsThis symposium was attended by 447 participants from 21 countries and regions worldwide. The scientific program consisted of the Nozoe lecture presented by Prof. François Diederich following the opening ceremony, 12 plenary lectures, 21 invited lectures, 38 oral presentations, and 246 poster presentations. Nineteen articles contributed by the Nozoe lecturer and the plenary and invited lecturers appear in this issue to highlight the recent remarkable progress in this scientific field presented at ISNA-12.The next symposium, ISNA-13, will be held in Luxembourg on 19-24 July 2009 and organized by Profs. The 2019 American Bee Research Conference (ABRC) was held January 10–12, 2019 in conjunction with the annual convention of the American Honey Producers Association in Tempe, AZ. Over the three-day conference, a total of 45 oral presentations and 13 poster presentations were given, representing work done from over 27 institutions and 34 different research groups from throughout the United States and Canada. This proceedings contains and overview of the conference and the submitted abstracts for presentations given at the 2018 American Bee Research Conference.

Objective: Abstracts submitted to meetings are subject to less rigorous peer review than full-text manuscripts. This study aimed to explore the publication outcome of abstracts presented at the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) annual meeting.Methods: Abstracts presented at the 2008 AAO meeting were analyzed. Each presented abstract was sought via PubMed to identify if it had been published as a full-text manuscript. The publication outcome, journal impact factor (IF), and time to publication were recorded.Results: A total of 690 abstracts were reviewed, of which 39.1% were subsequently published. They were published in journals with a median IF of 2.9 (range 0–7.2) and a median publication time of 426 days (range 0–2,133 days). A quarter were published in the journal Ophthalmology, with a shorter time to publication (median 282 vs. 534 days, p=0.003). Oral presentations were more likely to be published than poster presentations (57.8% vs. 35.9%, p<0.001) and in journals with higher IFs (3.2 vs. 2.8, p=0.02). Abstracts describing rare diseases had higher publication rates (49.4% vs. 38.0%, p=0.04) and were published in higher IF journals (3.7 vs. 2.9, p=0.03), within a shorter period of time (358 vs. 428 days, p=0.03). In multivariate analysis, affiliation with an institute located in the United States (p=0.002), abstracts describing rare diseases (p=0.03), and funded studies (p=0.03) were associated with publication in higher IF journals.Conclusions: Almost 40% of abstracts were published. Factors that correlated with publication in journals with higher IF were a focus on rare diseases, affiliation with a US institute, and funding.

This article examines the first decades of the field of ethnohistory as it developed in the United States. It participated in the general rapprochement between history and anthropology of mid-twentieth-century social science. However, unlike parallel developments in Europe and in other research areas, ethnohistory specifically arose out of the study of American Indian communities in the era of the Indian Claims Commission. Thus ethnohistory developed from a pragmatic rather than a theoretical orientation, with practitioners testifying both in favor of and against claims. Methodology was flexible, with both documentary sources and ethnographic methods employed to the degree that each was feasible. One way that ethnohistory was innovative was the degree to which women played prominent roles in its development. By the end of the first decade, the field was becoming broader and more willing to engage both theoretical and ethical issues raised by the foundational work. In particular, the geographic scope began to reach well beyond North America, especially to Latin America, where archival resources and the opportunities for ethnographic research were plentiful, but also to areas such as Melanesia, where recent European contact allowed researchers to observe the early postcontact period directly and to address the associated theoretical questions with greater authority. Ethnohistory is thus an important example of a field of study that grew organically without an overarching figure or conscious plan but that nevertheless came to engage central issues in cultural and historical analysis.

Purpose: This work aimed to identify and analyze the most frequently cited articles in retinal detachment (RD). Methods: Institute for Scientific Information’s Web of Science index (Thomas Scientific) was used to identify the top 100 most cited articles on RD between 1900 and 2019. Data from the top 100 most cited articles that met inclusion criteria were analyzed based on title, citation frequency, authorship, institution, journal, year of publication, and country of origin. Results: The top 100 articles in RD were cited 88 to 480 times. Steven K. Fisher was the most cited individual, with the University of California system being the most cited organization. Sixty-four percent of the top 100 articles originated from the United States and were published in the American Journal of Ophthalmology, Ophthalmology, and Archives of Ophthalmology at frequencies of 36%, 24%, and 11%, respectively. The top funding agencies included the US Department of Health and Human Services, the National Institutes of Health, and the National Eye Institute at 29%, 28%, and 27%, respectively. The top-cited article, which assessed the role of the retinal pigment epithelium by histologic and electron microscopic analysis of RDs in eyes of owl monkeys, was by Machemer and Laqua in the American Journal of Ophthalmology. Conclusions: This bibliometric analysis provides researchers and clinicians with a detailed overview of the most cited manuscripts in RD. Such analyses may guide researchers and funding agencies on important research areas in the field.

Nuclear resonant vibrational spectroscopy (NRVS) is a synchrotron radiation (SR)-based nuclear inelastic scattering spectroscopy that measures the phonons (i.e., vibrational modes) associated with the nuclear transition. It has distinct advantages over traditional vibration spectroscopy and has wide applications in physics, chemistry, bioinorganic chemistry, materials sciences, and geology, as well as many other research areas. In this article, we present a scientific and figurative description of this yet modern tool for the potential users in various research fields in the future. In addition to short discussions on its development history, principles, and other theoretical issues, the focus of this article is on the experimental aspects, such as the instruments, the practical measurement issues, the data process, and a few examples of its applications. The article concludes with introduction to non-57Fe NRVS and an outlook on the impact from the future upgrade of SR rings.

The construction industry is an indicator of economic development: in good times both individuals and companies invest to increase or improve their houses and facilities. The halted construction is an indication of economic difficulties. Hence the importance of protecting infrastructure investments through diagnostic, recovery and construction rehabilitation procedures. IX National Congress ALCONPAT Mexico 2020 addressed the thematic axes: Materials and nanomaterials, Durability and sustainability, Preservation of built heritage, Preservation, maintenance and rehabilitation, Semi and non-destructive tests, Corrosion in concrete structures, Climate Change. Four Plenary Conferences were presented, given by renowned researchers from Spain, Colombia, Mexico and Argentina. Nine Master Conferences were also presented, given by Researchers from the Autonomous University of Nuevo León, Veracruzana University, CNIC of Havana, Cuba and the Autonomous University of Campeche. 61 papers were received, divided into: 35 oral presentations 26 poster presentations. The participating institutions were: Universidad Autónoma de Campeche, Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, Universidad Veracruzana, Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Hidalgo, Tecnológico Nacional de México (Instituto Tecnológico de Chetumal), Universidad Autónoma de Chiapas, Cinvestav Unidad Mérida, Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán , Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo, Universidad Juárez Autónoma de Tabasco, CIIDIR IPN Campus Oaxaca, Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas de Cuba, Consultor Independiente de Ecuador, Centro Internacional de Matemáticas Numéricas e Ingeniería (España), Universidad Nacional del Sur ( Argentina). Effort and enthusiasm of the participants to carry out the event in virtual mode, due to the existing adverse sanitary conditions, stands out. It is one more indication of the strength of the ALCONPAT community in maintaining the continuity of one of its activities to exchange knowledge and experiences for the improvement of practices aimed at prolonging the durability of the infrastructure.

ObjectivesNeurology as a specialty is becoming increasingly feminised. Generally, women are under-represented in academic medicine, particularly at more senior levels. The aim of this study was to assess the gender balance of presenters at the 2014 ABN meeting.MethodsData on gender mix of the specialty was obtained from the 2012 Federation of the Royal College of Physicians Census. Oral presenters and first authors from posters were identified using the Meeting Programme and Abstract Book and the GMC register was used to ascertain individuals' gender.Results29.5% of neurology trainees and consultants are female. There were 38 platform presentations, and 188 poster presentations. It was possible to identify the gender of 99.6% of presenters and first authors. 48.9% of first authors on posters were female; women conducted 18.4% of platform presentations. Oral presenters were significantly more likely to be male (p<0.01).ConclusionCompared to the specialty as a whole, women were well represented at the meeting. However, females were significantly less likely to undertake more prestigious oral presentations. Further work is planned to identify whether the reason behind this imbalance is explicit or implicit bias, and to help identify barriers to increasing female participation in academic neurology.

This article reports on the JASAL 2016 Annual Conference held on December 10, 2016 at Konan Women’s University in Kobe, Japan. JASAL (Japan Association for Self-Access Learning) is a non-profit professional organization devoted to promoting self-access learning in Japan. The conference consisted of opening remarks by JASAL president Hisako Yamashita, a plenary talk by Dr. Jo Mynard, twenty oral presentations on various self-access learning topics, twelve poster presentations, and tours of the e-space, which is a self-access center at Konan Women’s University. Ninety-five participants from over forty institutions attended. In this summary, the author reports on the day’s events, featuring select presentations on SALC design, leadership, integration into curriculum, training, and lessons learned.
