Using a historical approach, this paper revisits Max Weber's ‘Protestant ethic’, addressing in particular a variant form of it – the ‘Scottish work ethic’. It examines that ethic as both a collective and individuated theological drive that helped shape the proto-entrepreneurial proclivity of the Scottish people. The Scottish work ethic is a secularized drive peculiar to Scotland with its strong Calvinistic religious heritage and emphasis on hard work, thrift and education. From an academic perspective, although much has been written about the Protestant ethic and Weber's thesis, the same cannot be said of the Scottish work ethic. This paper fills this gap in the literature while extending consideration of the nature of the work ethic to include the power of religion and theological drives in the creation of the prevalent spirit of enterprise within a people.

Gendhing Panembrama was a creative and innovative product when Paku Buwana X reigned in the Negari Surakarta. Gendhing Panembrama emerged when the Dutch East Indies government imposed restrictions on political and economic activities in Karaton Surakarta. The restriction aimed to remove Paku Buwana X’s legitimacy from the political and economic side. Gendhing Panembrama became one of the symbols of Paku Buwana X’s resistance to the Dutch East Indies government policy. Resistance through the creation of Gendhing Panembrama resulted in the enforcement of the king of Surakarta’s sovereignty and legitimacy. This study aims to reveal the background of the Gendhing Panembrama creation and the events surrounding the Gendhing Panembrama creation. This study employed a historical approach and symbolic interpretation. From the study conducted, it was concluded that the creation of Gendhing Panembrama was a means for Paku Buwana X in maintaining his sovereignty and legitimacy. The intelligence of Paku Buwana X in managing the musical arts amid the political pressure of the Dutch East Indies government, in the end, could radiate his majesty, authority, and power and maintain the Javanese tradition of the Karaton Surakarta.

Scientific creationism has been brought forcefully to the attention of the American public in recent years. From a small beginning in 1963, the creationist societies have grown until they now number their membership in the thousands. Not only their growth, but also their tactics and strategies at the local level, the state legislative houses and the courtrooms, are noteworthy. Most publications dealing with the phenomenon of scientific creationists have dealt with their beliefs; this paper summarises their attempts to have their own beliefs given equal time in the American educational system. Using an historical approach, it is possible to document how the scientific creationists operate, and where their strengths and weaknesses are as a fundamentalist organization. In conclusion, some of the effects of the current resurgence of the creation - evolution controversy are discussed.

Abstract For some years now the Anglican Church in Nigeria has been contending with the problems arising from the creation of missionary dioceses. Many retreats for the bishops in the missionary dioceses have been held from late 2000 to date, in an effort to find solutions to the problems, yet the problems have continued unabated. The situation provokes concern and interest in public discourse and intellectual circles. This study examines critically the problems of missionary dioceses and the effects of such problems on the workers and their families therein using a historical approach and both primary and secondary sources. The findings show that some of the missionary dioceses were created with poor funding and facilities as there was no adequate preparation for their creation. The study therefore recommends that the Church of Nigeria should support the missionary dioceses to stabilize.

This article discusses the struggle for spiritual authority between Sulaymān al-Zuhdī as “Shaykh Jabal Abi Qubais” and Khalil Hamdi Basya as “Shaykh Jabal Hindi.” The conflict occurred in several stages from the beginning, and finally, Hamdi Basya moved on to Sulaymān al-Zuhdī. Although this clash of the leadership in the Tarekat Naqshabandiyya Khālidiyya (TNK) occurred in the holy land in Mecca, it also influences Indonesia. While the Tarekat Naqshabandiyya Jabal Abi Qubis (TNJAQ) network is barely found in Indonesia, the trail of the Tarekat Naqshabandiyya Jabal Hindi (TNJH) was encountered. By analyzing through a historical approach and interviewing several authoritative individuals, the research discovered that TNJH has been developing in Indonesia, especially in North Sumatra, and has widely spread within some areas, particularly Medan, Binjai, and Deli Serdang. It was also found that this Sufi order primaries the balance of dhikr al-qalb and dhikr al-‘aql by mentioning Allah and paying attention to the creation in the process of tazkīyat al-nafs.

This chapter illustrates how the creation of illusive categories and perceptions through the use of religious metaphor, among other rhetorical tools, culminated in the inevitable dichotomy in the way the world perceived Osama bin Laden. It thus conceptualizes bin Laden's discourse as a set of discursive illusions, in which the dual faces created of and by him turn out to be two sides of the same coin. Drawing on a combination of analytical tools, which include the historical approach, membership categorization analysis, and discourse as metaphor, the chapter analyzes a selection of speeches by Osama bin Laden and George W. Bush in an attempt to illustrate how both parties use almost identical forms of discourse in order to produce diametrically opposed conceptualizations of reality. It illustrates how Osama bin Laden played the role of both the evil terrorist and the brave champion of Islam through the creation of discursive illusions.

Abstract Tomasello offers a compelling account of the emergence of humans’ sense of obligation. We suggest that more needs to be said about the role of affect in the creation of obligations. We also argue that positive emotions such as gratitude evolved to encourage individuals to fulfill cooperative obligations without the negative quality that Tomasello proposes is inherent in obligations.
