Career maturity is one of the crucial element for students in the school setting. Career maturity is vital for students to discover their knowledge about their future professions. For gifted and talented students, they may advance from the regular students in discovering their future jobs. This study focusing on career maturity among gifted and talented students in Malaysia. The level of career maturity is measured by the researcher by using Career Maturity Inventory (CMI)-Revised 1995. This research involved 2500 respondents around Malaysia, focusing on boarding schools’ students. The descriptive statistical analysis is used to present the demographic data involving gender, the level of education, and family income of the respondents.  The main finding of this research indicates the difference in career maturity between respondents (gifted and talented students) and the regular students. The implications of this research are discussed especially in terms of guidance and counseling provision in boarding school.

The article is intended to describe the implementation and the supporting factors of Islamic education at accelerated classes at state SMA 1 Kediri. Descriptive-qualitative was employed, and the data were elicited through interview, observation, and documentation. It was found out that the implementation of Islamic education at accelerated classes was not very much different from the regular classes in the form of curriculum, methods, and evaluation. The difference is only that accelerated classes are only for gifted and talented students. In addition, some supporting factors were good communication as well close relationship between the teachers and students, skilled teachers, sufficient facilities, good students, students’ illiterate technology, KMP. Some barriers were also found. They are teachers’ literate technology, small classes, and students’ minimum religious background. Therefore, any party related to this should contribute to overcome the barriers.  Key words: Accelerated classes, Instruction, Islamic education.

This study examines the use of discourse in the classroom for gifted and talented students in which social processes are obscured in turn, types of questions asked by teachers, control of discourse and overall discourse structure (Aman, I. & Mustafa, R. (2006)). The analysis used is based on the theoretical framework of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) by Fairclough, N. In general, the process of communicating students in the classroom is generally said to be one-way. However, this study looks at the difference between having a higher level of communication between smart and smarter students than ordinary schoolgirls. Gifted and Talented students are categorized as students with high IQ, EQ and high cognitive skills. This diverse and talented student makes learning to study the process of discourse in the classroom is interesting. This study takes an audio recording of the teaching and learning of Malay Language classes. The results show that there are several features of discourse in the classroom that can be identified. This indicates that a process of interaction between students and teachers has taken place.

ABSTRAK Remaja merupakan fase penting dalam masa perkembangan terutama mengenai kemampuan dalam mengambil keputusan-keputusan pilihan karir masa depannya. Keputusan karir akan mudah dicapai apabila peserta didik memiliki kematangan karir yang baik. Konseling kelompok merupakan layanan yang dapat membantu peserta didik mengatasi hambatan dalam kematangan karir. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah kajian pustaka yang didukung oleh data-data dari beberapa artikel, buku-buku sumber, dan dokumen pendukung lainnya. Guru bimbingan dan konseling dapat menerapkan layanan konseling kelompok untuk mengatasi masalah-masalah karir. Salah satu pendekatan yang dapat digunakan dalam rangka membantu kematangan karir peserta didik dalam konseling kelompok adalah pendekatan yang berfokus untuk mengubah pikiran negative dan keyakinan maladaptive (CBT) yang dimiliki oleh peserta didik. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa layanan konseling kelompok dengan pendekatan Cognitive Behavior Theraphy (CBT) secara efektif dapat membantu dalam mengatasi permasalahan karir peserta didik. Kata Kunci: kematangan karir, konseling kelompok, terapi perilaku kognitif ABSTRACT Teenage is an important phase in the developmental period, especially regarding the ability to make decisions about his future career choices. Career decisions will be easily achieved if students have good career maturity. Group counseling is a service that can help students overcome obstacles in career maturity. The research method used is a literature review that is supported by data from several articles, source books, and other supporting documents. Guidance and counseling teachers can apply group counseling services to overcome career problems. One approach that can be used in order to help the career maturity of students in group counseling is an approach that focuses on changing negative thoughts and maladaptive beliefs (CBT) that are owned by students. The results of the study showed that group counseling services with the Cognitive Behavior Theraphy (CBT) approach can be effectively help in solving the career problems of students. This study explored understandings shared by fifth-grade gifted students as they read the book Restart, which explores bullying. Students read, created representations, and discussed the text. Grounded by Langer’s stances of envisionment, this descriptive case study analyzed student representations and conversations. Each of the stances was represented with most responses being represented in Stances 1 (getting a sense of the text), 2 (interpreting text), and 4 (analyzing the text). In addition, most students viewed bullies and their behavior as being in a fixed state, which was tied to the perceived power a bully held. The results from this study have implications for teachers who work with gifted and talented students, counselors who work with students in mental health and resilience programs, and the collaboration of these school personnel.

The “EncycloMEdia” project provides a stimulating project-based opportunity for gifted and talented students in the middle and upper grades. Its first component is an arts-integration piece in the form of an altered book. The second component is a cumulative assessment document containing students’ text-based analyses that correspond to the entries in the altered book. Both components of the project require students to develop valuable critical thinking and writing skills. This integrated, project-based unit can be modified to address any subject area. Detailed descriptions of the content, process, and product are included so educators can implement this idea with their own gifted students.

Purpose: To perform retrospective analysis of 75 post-operative disc space infections after open lumbar discectomy (OLD) and to assess the outcome of their medical and surgical management in a tertiary-level hospital. Methods: Records of 50 men and 25 women aged 26–65 (mean, 42.53) years who underwent treatment for post-operative discitis (POD) after single level OLD at L3–4 (n = 8), L4–5 (n = 42), L5–S1 (n = 25) level. The POD was diagnosed according to specific clinical signs, laboratory and radiographic investigations and all of them received initial intravenous antibiotics (IVA) for at least 4–6 weeks followed by oral ones. Successful responders (n = 55) were considered in Group-C and remainder [Group-S (n = 20)] were operated at least after 4 weeks of failure. Demographic data, clinical variables, hospital stay, duration of antibiotic treatment and post-treatment complications were collected from the hospital record and assessment before and after treatment were done by using visual analogue scale (VAS) and Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) score. Comprehensive outcome was evaluated by modified criteria of Kirkaldy-Willis. Results: The mean follows up was 36.38 months. Significant improvement of mean VAS and JOA score was achieved in both conservative (76.36% satisfactory) and operative (90% satisfactory) groups although the difference was statistically insignificant. Conclusion: Although insignificant, early surgical intervention provided better results (e.g. functional outcomes, length of hospital stay and duration of antibiotic treatment therapy) than conventional conservative treatment in post-operative discitis.

The purpose of the present studies was to test the unidimensional versus the multidimensional perspectives of self-esteem using a group-comparison approach. In the first study, male and female talented and regular students completed the Perceived Competence Scale (Harter, 1982). This scale assesses self-esteem in three life domains: cognitive (school), physical (sports and physical activity), and social, as well as general self-esteem. Results showed that talented students had higher self-esteem than regular students only in the cognitive domain. In Study 2, we sought to replicate and extend these findings to the context of sports. Male and female talented and regular swimmers completed the PCS as well as a swimming self-esteem subscale. Results showed that talented swimmers had significantly higher levels of swimming self-esteem than regular swimmers. Talented swimmers also reported higher levels of physical self-esteem although to a lesser extent. In addition, male students reported higher levels of self-esteem than females in the physical domain (Studies 1 and 2), as well as in swimming (Study 2). These findings were interpreted as providing strong support for the multidimensional view of self-esteem.
