Wellness of the patients correlated with the hospital building performance. For building to achieve it design objectives and provide value added services to owners, users and other stakeholders, maintenance functions are strategic. As a result, management of the maintenance of hospital buildings is a delicate and expensive task to perform. Despite the fact that there is a lack of representative data on the maintenance of hospital buildings in Malaysia, there is a growing concern surrounding the subject. Fire outbreaks and decay in hospital buildings suggest a need to conduct critical research to investigate the maintenance management practices of hospital buildings. This paper reports part of an ongoing research that aims to develop a maintenance model for hospital buildings. Hence, this current research reports the results of literature reviews and observations on hospital buildings in Malaysia and their maintenance practices. Upon reviewing the literature, a conceptual framework of maintenance model for hospital buildings was proposed. The research found that the current approaches to maintenance management in the hospital buildings were corrective, fragmented, cost-driven and expensive. The procurement of maintenance services was mainly outsourcings. All these call into question, the decision making processes of the hospital maintenance organisations. Collectively, the above considerations have led to the formulation of the main research question- what are the critical success factors [CSFs] for the maintenance of hospital buildings? The current study also discussed a proposed research methodology for the main research. Furthermore, issues pertaining to the research design, ontology and epistemology were briefly discussed. It was established that to enrich the findings of the main research, it was imperative to collect primary data using both quantitative and qualitative research paradigms.

Abstract It has been widely investigated that the application of operations management techniques is not only based on technical factors, but it is mainly associated with organisational factors such as culture, previous polices and procedures, etc. A prime example of promisng operations practices is Lean Six Sigma (L6σ). The main research question for L6σ is related to its liabilities and constrains regarding its implementation. Therefore, this paper aims to explore the critical factors related to the application L6σ. The context of the analysis is service industry since it seems that it has been neglected from the literature that mainly focuses on manufacturing. The methodology was based on the qualitative exploration of three case studies from the service industry. Secondary data were collected through an analysis of companies' documents, written procedures and quality assurance policies and primary data were collected through a number of in-depth face-to-face interviews with managers and quality experts. The findings show that there are ten (10) particular factors that influence the implementation of L6σ in service organizations.

In Europe, we are witnessing a growth in the social economy sector, i.e. in socio – economic organizations, which belong neither to the traditional for profit sector (market economy) nor to the public sector (government) (Deforuny, 2001; Young, 2007) - they rather act at the interface of civil society and markets (Jäger, 2010). The main goal of these organizations, called social enterprises or social business, is doing business for socially useful purposes. These initiatives may take the form of traditional Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), like foundations and associations, as well as new kinds of organizations for example social cooperatives, partnerships, funds.Social economy is situated between public and business sphere of administration and combines both, social objectives and the ones profit-oriented. Social entrepreneurship is unquestionably a desirable feature of social economy understood as reaching planned economic objectives with the use of available resources. Another feature comprises in using involvement and creativity of excluded persons and thus, solving social problems, among others, structural unemployment and disadvantage of social minorities as well as strengthening democratic processes, bottom-up social initiatives etc. Achieving objectives, both social and economic, requires using modern management instruments and methods. All of the above mentioned organizations or ventures, which achieve their local, social or ethical mission and goals using methods adopted from the business sector (Defourny, Hulgard, Pestoff, eds.2014). One of these methods is project management. The whole sector of social economy, both in Poland and in Europe, is strongly influenced by projectification process: a lot of the activities are performed in the form of projects. For last ten years projectification of social non-governmental sector as well as the economy sector in Poland was reinforced by EU’s funding stream – hundreds of co-funded projects, which aimed at increasing the level of development and improving the condition of social economy, were implemented. Some of these projects have resulted in the creation of durable, dynamically operating social enterprises, and some of them did not produce any long-term results. In case of successful projects, we can observe an unusual effect of projectification process: the creation of permanent structures, sustainable social economy organizations through the implementation of projects.Although we can identify examples of interesting research on impact of project work on NGOs (Brière, Proulx, Navaro, & Laporte, 2015); Golini, Kalchschmidt, Landoni, 2015) or critical success factors of non-governmental projects (Khang & Moe, 2008), there is a research gap which we would like to address in this paper: lack of research on project management best practices in social enterprises. Thus, the main research question we would like to investigate in the paper is: What are the factors that lead to creation of durable, permanent social economy enterprises from projects? This paper draws on set of qualitative data from broader research on social economy sector conducted in Poland in years 2011-2013 by researchers from the Institute of Public Affairs (IPA). For the purpose of this paper we have conducted multiple case study analysis and analysed 36 case studies of existing social enterprises. One of our research goals was to find out, which factors are critical in the process of creation durable social enterprises from projects. Also, we wanted to understand how projectification, influenced strongly by the EU policies, changes the landscape of social enterprises in Poland and helps them achieve success.

This paper presents the conclusions of four case studies in technology-based (TB) organisations. These companies have a strong international presence and also represent success-stories of Portuguese innovation, covering the 1980s through to the 2000s. Using a qualitative approach, the authors pinpoint the critical success factors that made these companies a reference in terms of innovation. These cases were chosen as they all recount the successful application of sustainable innovation in social processes to organisations. The research question was: What are the key factors that drive innovation processes in successful Portuguese technology-based organisations? Results show that the lessons learned from narratives of innovation play an instrumental role in the comprehension of social interaction complexities. Furthermore, the study identifies several management practices that highlight the significance of the players involved in innovation. The findings show that a passion for knowledge and its productive applications are key differentiating factors.

Purpose Conventional methods practiced by the Development and Facilities Management Unit (UPPF) have faced issues due to management deficiencies and incompetent staff members who were unable to handle facilities management assessment processes at Malaysian Polytechnics. The paper aims to discuss this issue. Design/methodology/approach The prime objective of this paper is to improve the conventional methods which tend to be both cumbersome and ineffective in the UPPF Maintenance Management Systems (MMSs) at Malaysian Polytechnics. Primary data were gathered through interviews to develop the proposed system. Eight Polytechnics were selected based on major problems arising from using conventional methods. A comparison was then conducted to investigate the maintenance management practices at each Polytechnic. There are around 32 Polytechnics in Malaysia and most are using conventional methods. Findings The major conclusion drawn from the interview results was that comprehensive MMSs are lacking, specifically those that integrate operation and maintenance (O&M) processes of facilities management and software programming that provides guidelines for decision-making processes. The interview results also revealed irregularities within the Malaysian Polytechnics’ maintenance management database. This paper explores the concepts of Electronic Form Defect Assessment (E-Form Defect Assessment), relational databases and online customer complaints to adapt their role as dynamic maintenance management tools. Originality/value The paper concludes that the developed system is able to accommodate recording of data, such as complaints and specific items needed for maintenance, through the internet and intranet. MMSs potentially transform facilities management O&M processes into one of the most sophisticated technologies by providing access to all information published by each Malaysian Polytechnic institution. This technology was established in order to foster financial cooperation with the idea being that Polytechnics which compete with one another become financially interdependent with the goal of promoting successful facilities management in the construction of new facilities and infrastructure.

AbstractThe economic crisis and the emergence of an increasing number of competitors in the banking sector have led to the need for banks to better understand their clients and to work more closely together with them. The basis of survival and profitable business of banks is the achievement of high quality offer that is the asset for developing long-term relationships. The aim of the paper is to determine the effects of the banking services quality dimensions on satisfaction and loyalty of clients using modified SERVQUAL model. The main research question is to examine which dimensions of banking services quality have an effect on the satisfaction and loyalty of clients, what is the nature and the intensity of this impact. For the purpose of measuring clients’ attitudes regarding banking services quality, the survey method, questionnaire technique was applied. The questionnaire was distributed to clients of banks operating in the territory of Kragujevac, Central Serbia, in the period from September to October, 2018. Simple random sample technique for sampling was applied. The analysis was conducted by processing the primary data in statistical software SPSS where several statistical analyses were conducted. Based on multiple regression analysis, it came to the result that the strongest influence on clients’ satisfaction has variable empathy and the weakest variable tangibility, while variable reliability has no influence. On the other hand, clients’ loyalty is most strongly influenced by variable responsiveness while the weakest influence, as well as on satisfaction, has variable tangibility. The paper points to the significance of improving banking services quality in order to achieve higher level of satisfaction and long-term clients’ loyalty, which is particularly important when it comes to dimensions that have weak or no influence on the observed aspects of consumer behaviour.

Research background: The closer interaction between business and government has, on a global basis, drawn attention to the “revolving doors” issue, i.e. the movement of persons between high posts in the public and private sectors. Purpose of the article: The main research question of this study covers the issue whether successful businessmen do or do not have better prospects for more effective political governance and economic policy making than career politicians or political professionals, and/or if politics and business require, for achieving their goals, similar or substantially different personal requirements. Methods: The survey was based on multidisciplinary qualitative comparative approach and literature research, covering historical, economics, management, and psychological views. This method corresponds the complex nature of the topics surveyed. Findings & Value added: The findings arrived to the conclusion that even a person successful in business may not necessarily have the expertise for effective public administration as well as sound public policy decisions. It showed that the opposite idea, coming often from businessmen circles themselves, fails to take into consideration that government, due to several reasons, cannot be operated like a business and many characteristics of successful businessmen do not fit well to high political posts, due both to their management style and “professional blindness” in terms of their approach to economic policy, e.g. international trade. Even though many management methods of successful companies can and should be taken over by the state/public administration, this goal can be achieved without the direct personal involvement of professional businessmen.

Maintenance Management is a key pillar in companies, especially energy utilities, which have high investments in assets, and so for its proper contribution has to be integrated and aligned with other departments in order to conserve the asset value and guarantee the services. In this line, Intelligent Assets Management Platforms (IAMP) are defined as software platforms to collect and analyze data from industrial assets. They are based on the use of digital technologies in industry. Beside the fact that monitoring and managing assets over the internet is gaining ground, this paper states that the IAMPs should also support a much better balanced and more strategic view in existing asset management and concretely in maintenance management. The real transformation can be achieved if these platforms help to understand business priorities in work and investments. In this paper, we first discuss about the factors explaining IAMP growth, then we explain the importance of considering, well in advance, those managerial aspects of the problem, for proper investments and suitable digital transformation through the adoption and use of IAMPs. A case study in the energy sector is presented to map, or to identify, those platform modules and Apps providing important value-added features to existing asset management practices. Later, attention is paid to the methodology used to develop the Apps’ data models from a maintenance point of view. To illustrate this point, a methodology for the development of the asset criticality analysis process data model is proposed. Finally, the paper includes conclusions of the work and relevant literature to this research.

The regulation of broadcast religious programming is a critical challenge the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) is facing in Nigeria. In Maiduguri, the capital of the north-eastern Nigerian state of Borno where religion forms a core part of the people’s culture, a great deal of Borno Radio Television (BRTV) and Nigerian Television Authority Maiduguri’s (NTA Maiduguri) airtime is allocated to Islamic preaching during the Muslim’s annual Ramadan fasting. However, there is a dearth of research on whether the airtime those broadcast stations allocate to Islamic programming complies with the NBC code on religious programming. This research gap formed the main research question of this study which was conducted during the second quarter of 2019. Primary data were collected using key informant interviews with five personnel from the two broadcast stations and the Maiduguri office of NBC, while secondary data were obtained through the review of official documents. Key findings showed that the airtime allocatedto religious programmes exceeded the 10% NBC limit, BRTV allocated more airtime to religious programmes than NTA Maiduguri and Islamic programmes were allocated more airtime than programmes of other religions. Recommendations on how to improve compliance to NBC’s regulations were offered at the end.
