In this article, we aim to demonstrate that the low prices of goods produced in the global South and the attendant modest contribution of its exports to the Gross Domestic Product of the North conceals the real dependence of the latter's economies on low-waged Southern labor. We argue that the relocation of industry to the global South in the past three decades has resulted in a massive increase of transferred value to the North. The principal mechanisms for this transfer are the repatriation of surplus value by means of foreign direct investment, the unequal exchange of products embodying different quantities of value, and extortion through debt servicing.<p class="mrlink"><p class="mrpurchaselink"><a href="http://monthlyreview.org/index/volume-67-number-3" title="Vol. 67, No. 3: July 2015" target="_self">Click here to purchase a PDF version of this article at the <em>Monthly Review</em> website.</a></p>

The purpose of this study is to analyze the impact of Foreign Direct Investment, Gross Domestic Product, Energy Consumption, Electric Consumption, and Meat Consumption on CO2 emissions of 41 countries in the world using panel data from 1999 to 2013. After analyzing 41 countries in the world data, furthermore 17 countries in Asia was analyzed with the same period. This study utilized quantitative approach with Ordinary Least Square (OLS) regression method. The results of 41 countries in the world data indicates that Foreign Direct Investment, Gross Domestic Product, Energy Consumption, and Meat Consumption significantlyaffect Environmental Qualities which measured by CO2 emissions. Whilst the results of 17 countries in Asia data implies that Foreign Direct Investment, Energy Consumption, and Electric Consumption significantlyaffect Environmental Qualities. However, Gross Domestic Product and Meat Consumption does not affect Environmental Qualities.

The paper seeks to determine the effect of exchange rate volatility on foreign direct investment in Ghana from 1986 to 2017. The study adopted the Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroskedasticity model to fit the data set from 1986-2017. The results indicate that, previous quarter information can influence current quarter volatility in Foreign Direct Investment. Real exchange rate, gross domestic product and treasure bill rate considered as external factors, are all found to be significant. This shows that, volatility from these factors can spillover to volatility in foreign direct investment.  To ensure stable inflow of foreign direct investment, we recommend that policies should gear towards stability in the forex market and interest rate among others.

The surge in foreign direct investment (FDI)—investment with managerial control by the foreign investor, usually a multinational corporation—has been the major driver of globalization in the past two decades and the accelerator of economic development in many developing countries. It has, however, bypassed Turkey. By all relevant relative measures found in the United Nations' annual World Investment Report, Turkey has failed to attract much FDI.

AbstractPolitical scientists and economists have long been interested in the role of special interests in the policymaking process. In the past few years, a series of important new books have argued forcefully that the lobbying activities of economic actors have an important influence on the prospects for war and peace. All of these analyses claim that whether economic actors enhance or decrease the likelihood of conflict ultimately depends on the domestic political balance between economic actors who have a strong vested interest in pushing for peace versus those that do not. I advance two contrary arguments. At least among the advanced states, I posit there are no longer any economic actors who will be favorable toward war and who will lobby the government with this preference. All of the identified mechanisms that previously contributed to such lobbying in these states have been swept away with the end of colonialism and the rise of economic globalization. In particular, I show that the current structure of the global economy now makes it feasible for foreign direct investment to serve as an effective substitute for conquest in a way that was not possible in previous eras. My second argument concerns those economic actors in advanced states with a preference for peace. I posit that it has become unnecessary for them to directly lobby the government to avoid war on economic grounds because economic globalization—the accumulation of decisions by economic actors throughout the globe—now has sufficiently clear economic incentives for leaders.

The article highlights three stages of the formation of multinationals from developing countries. Although first Argentine TNCs appeared at the turn of the 19th — 20th centuries, in the majority of the Global South countries TNCs appeared in the 1960s — 1980s. With the collapse of the bipolar world order, which in many developing countries was accompanied by significant internal political and economic transformations, the second stage of foreign expansion of TNCs from the Global South began. Indeed, in 1990 they accounted for 6 % of global outward foreign direct investment stock, while the figure was 10 % by the end of 2005. We date the beginning of the third stage to the financial and economic crisis of 2007—2009, since multinationals from developing countries as a whole are more successfully overcoming the period of turbulence in the global economy. By the end of 2020, they accounted for 22 % of global outward foreign direct investment stock, and during the COVID-19 pandemic crisis they generally exported more than 50% of the capital. The modern foreign expansion of such TNCs has many reasons, differs greatly from country to country, and often differs slightly from the specifics of Western multinationals. At the same time, initially, “late internationalization” in developing countries had two main vectors — the use of new opportunities for South — South cooperation and overcoming, through the creation of subsidiaries in highly developed countries, the shortcomings of the business environment of “catching up” countries.

Keterbukaan perekonomian menjadi penentu yang penting dalam pertumbuhan ekonomi. Kondisi perekonomian suatu negara dapat memberi dampak terhadap penerimaan sektor perpajakan. Hal ini dapat dilihat dari salah satu penerimaan pajak suatu negara yaitu melalui penerimaan PPh Badan. Tujuan dalam penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis pengaruh pertumbuhan ekonomi yang diukur dengan Gross Domestic Product (GDP), Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), dan Tax Rate terhadap besarnya penerimaan PPh Badan (CIT) dalam kasus lima negara ASEAN selama periode 1999-2018. Metode penelitian ini dilakukan dengan menggunakan regresi data panel dengan estimasi Random Effect Model atau Generalized Least Square (GLS) dengan program Eviews. Hasil penelitian ini secara simultan menunjukkan bahwa variabel independen yaitu GDP, FDI, dan tax rate memiliki pengaruh yang signifikan terhadap variabel dependen yaitu penerimaan PPh Badan (CIT). Secara parsial PDB dan tax rate memiliki pengaruh positif dan signifikan yang artinya kenaikan atau penurunan GDP dan tax rate akan mempengaruhi kenaikan atau penurunan penerimaan PPh Badan (CIT), sedangkan FDI tidak memiliki pengaruh terhadap penerimaan PPh Badan (CIT). Melalui penelitian ini diharapkan dapat mengukur variabel-variabel yang memiliki pengaruh terhadap penerimaan PPh Badan, sehingga penerimaan PPh Badan dapat ditingkatkan.

The fifth chapter, on products, deals with the global urban literatures around infrastructure, including both physical infrastructure and the economic understanding of infrastructural interconnections of the global urban system. While physical infrastructure dominates in Chinese investments in the global South, southern urban theory has turned attention to people-as-infrastructure. Books and articles about infrastructure in the global South for a decade or more have argued for seeing infrastructure as vital, lively, or alive, including human and nonhuman agency, and this chapter seeks to connect with this trend. It concentrates on trade and foreign direct investment from China in Africa, with a detailed case study of Zanzibar. It then examines the experiences and socio-material infrastructures of African traders in Guangzhou and the PRD.
