This paper explores the usage of devices of syntactic stylistics in contemporary Russian comics. The research aims to determine the functions that are achieved through elements of expressive syntax. The objective is to explore comics style in general, as well as devices on the phonostylistic, graphostylistic and the lexical stylistics plane. During the research, the analytic and synthetic method of scientific research was used, as well as the procedure of modern stylistic and syntactic analysis. The paper collects and analyzes examples of contemporary Russian comics that contain the following devices of syntactic stylistics: ellipsis, parcellation, nominative clauses, inversion and ecphonesis. The conclusion reached is that expressive syntax devices, as well as numerous other stylistic devices, are very frequently used in Russian comics. The function of these devises consists in conveying the features of conversational style, heroes’ emotional states, their relation to specific events, in achieving the verbal characterization of characters, in conveying the dynamics of action, emphasizing messages, as well as in formulating a concise expression which constitutes one of the main distinctive features of comics style.

SummaryThe use of the concept of an exclusive Economie zone has increased since the adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. However, the characterization of this zone varies greatly between States. This article presents an exhaustive survey of the concept of an exclusive Economie zone. The author discusses the types of jurisdiction exercised by States in their uses of an exclusive Economie zone. Disparity exists between the provisions of the Convention and State practice in some specific areas: for example, the provisions on the environment and on scientific research. Despite these exceptions, the author maintains that the basic tenets of the Convention are respected in State practice. State declarations as well as arbitral and judicial decisions show that the Convention and State practice are together evolving to reinforce the basic principles of the concept of an exclusive Economie zone.

This chapter introduces the core thematic ideas of the present volume: that psychiatric research is in crisis, that it has entered a period of extraordinary science, and that a fully adequate response to the crisis should be responsive to the perspectives and interests of persons. We identify various sources of the crisis, drawing special attention to controversies concerning the role of the DSM in psychiatric research. And, we identify different strategies of response to the current crisis, including approaches that emphasize the importance of personal perspectives and the needs of the clinic and those that emphasize the important role of various scientific research programs. Further, we survey various developments (e.g., debates over fundamentals and a role for philosophical analysis, probing of the problems of the DSM framework, relaxation of standard forms of research practice, the introduction of the Research Domain Criteria initiative and other novel research programs) that are jointly suggestive of Thomas Kuhn’s characterization of periods of crisis that can arise in scientific research and of the “extraordinary science” that ensues. We suggest that this Kuhnian framework is useful for understanding the state of psychiatric research and it provides a framework for thinking about responses to the current crisis. We conclude with brief overviews of the contributions to the volume, each of which provides such a response.

As a key part of the fourth industrial revolution, technology companies have become the most valuable companies in the world in terms of market capitalization. Surprisingly, however, these companies have been overlooked by studies of gender diversity in corporate governance even though their highly distinctive features may cause major differences in gender diversity with respect to companies in other sectors. The goal of this chapter is therefore to provide the first characterization of gender diversity in the corporate governance of large technology companies—specifically those with the highest market value—and explore the relationship between gender diversity and business performance. To achieve this goal, descriptive statistical analysis is used. Data correspond to the period 2005 to 2017. The findings confirm the under-representation of women on the boards of directors of 162 publicly listed companies. The findings also show that the most profitable companies are those that have the greatest female representation on their boards of directors.

Nonisocyanate polyurethane (NIPU) is a research hotspot in polyurethane applications because it does not use phosgene. Herein, a novel method of solvent- and catalyst-free synthesis of a hybrid nonisocyanate polyurethane (HNIPU) is proposed. First, four diamines were used to react with ethylene carbonate to obtain four bis(hydroxyethyloxycarbonylamino)alkane (BHA). Then, BHA reacted with dimer acid under condensation in the melt to prepare four nonisocynate polyurethane prepolymers. Further, the HNIPUs were obtained by crosslinking prepolymers and resin epoxy and cured with the program temperature rise. In addition, four amines and two resin epoxies were employed to study the effects and regularity of HNIPUs. According to the results from thermal and dynamic mechanical analyses, those HNIPUs showed a high degree of thermal stability, and the highest 5% weight loss reached about 350 °C. More importantly, the utilization of these green raw materials accords with the concept of sustainable development. Further, the synthetic method and HNIPUs don’t need isocyanates, catalysts, or solvents.

AbstractSingle-phase samples of T12Ba2CaCu2O8 and T12Ba2Ca2Cu3O10 have been prepared using a reliable and simple synthetic method. Samples were characterized by x-ray powder diffraction, magnetic susceptibility and four probe resistivity methods. The TcR=0 values for T12Ba2CaCu2O8 ranged from 100 to 105K, whereas those for T12Ba2Ca2Cu3O10 ranged from 96 to 107K. The relationship between the superconducting properties and the various preparation conditions are discussed.

Nodulation of Medicago sativa (alfalfa) is known to be restricted to Sinorhizobium meliloti and a few other rhizobia that include the poorly characterized isolates related to Rhizobium sp. strain Or191. Distinctive features of the symbiosis between alfalfa and S. meliloti are the marked specificity from the plant to the bacteria and the strict requirement for the presence of sulfated lipochitooligosac-charides (Nod factors [NFs]) at its reducing end. Here, we present evidence of the presence of a functional nodH-encoded NF sulfotransferase in the Or191-like rhizobia. The nodH gene, present in single copy, maps to a high molecular weight megaplasmid. As in S. meliloti, a nodF homolog was identified immediately upstream of nodH that was transcribed in the opposite direction (local synteny). This novel nodH ortholog was cloned and shown to restore both NF sulfation and the Nif+Fix+ phenotypes when introduced into an S. meliloti nodH mutant. Unexpectedly, however, nodH disruption in the Or191-like bacteria did not abolish their ability to nodulate alfalfa, resulting instead in a severely delayed nodulation. In agreement with evidence from other authors, the nodH sequence analysis strongly supports the idea that the Or191-like rhizobia most likely represent a genetic mosaic resulting from the horizontal transfer of symbiotic genes from a sinorhizobial megaplas-mid to a not yet clearly identified ancestor.
