This article reports on findings from a comparative study on firefighter students' learning processes in a technology-supported distance training course and a traditional campus training course in Sweden. Based on student interviews and observations of exercises, the article aims to describe and analyse the impact on learning processes when exercise-oriented teaching takes place in a technology-supported learning environment instead of face to face on campus. Drawing on the concept of contradiction in activity theory, the findings indicate that distance students encounter several dilemmas and conflicts related to low instructor presence, ambiguities regarding learning requirements and division of labor, as well as shortcomings in the technologies offered. However, the distance students tend to develop strategies for dealing with these contradictions, resulting in the development of self-directed learning and more learner-centered approaches, while the campus students rely to a greater extent on traditional, instructor-centered teaching. During the 2-year training course, however, it appears the established norms and conventions of teaching and learning which characterise the campus mode, counteract changes in the distance mode. The technology-supported learning process with its focus on exercise preparation is thus gradually normalised in the direction of the campus mode, and its face -to-face, instructor-led and exercise-oriented learning process.

It is a challenging task to produce science graduates who are successful academically as well as competent in various life-long skills that are needed for a successful career. To innovate the learning process and promote skill development, students should be encouraged to practise self-directed learning via online learning materials and e-learning tools, in addition to attending the conventional face-to-face lectures. In this chapter, the importance of a shift in the teaching and learning paradigm from teacher-centered to learner-centered learning is highlighted. The methods and approaches behind a successful implementation of blended learning for undergraduate science programs are discussed. Various e-learning tools and appropriate e-learning activities that can promote the development of self-directed and collaborative learning are also described in detail.

This article focuses on the impact on learning processes when digital technologies are integrated into PBL (problem-based learning) oriented distance training. Based on socio-cultural perspectives on learning and a comparative distance-campus as well as a time-perspective, instructor and student roles, and learning activities were explored. Interviews with instructors and students were collected from the two study modes at the beginning and at the end of the training period. The results showed that online PBL, compared to campus-based PBL, evolved towards a more individual, real-life and literacy-oriented problem-solving process with supervising instructors and self-directed learning among students. The follow-up study in the latter part of the training showed that the extended technology integration resulted in both phases of dissemination and normalization. The development in online PBL affected both the course design and educational talks throughout the training. However, the prevailing teaching culture and educational deficiencies of new instructors contributed to a gradual normalization of the online PBL.

Self-directed learning is an important skill highlighted in the 21st century learning. Hence, developing this skill through problem-based learning (PBL) is deemed to be potentially effective. However, PBL is still not widely implemented in Malaysian classrooms. The integration of face-to-face and online learning known as blended problem-based learning (BPBL) is potentially effective in improving PBL by enhancing teacher’s and students’ roles in self-directed learning. Thus, this research aims to investigate the roles of teacher and students in the process of self-directed learning (formulating learning issues) in BPBL by using basic qualitative approach. Data was collected from observations, interviews and documents (FILA chart). By using purposive sampling, twenty-five (25) students and a teacher from a school in Johor district were selected as the sample. The students were divided into five groups. The teacher and students’ roles in two randomly selected groups were compared. The results indicated that the teacher faced difficulties in monitoring students’ progress and some students were passive in the BPBL.

Advancements in the world of technology has certainly left positive impacts on the education industry. There have been many progressive changes in the way teaching and learning processes are delivered in classrooms. Research have shown that the effective of use of technology do produce commendable impacts on the learning processes that take place in class. The extensive use of technology offers variety of options for learning as well as it encourages self-directed learning. These in turn helps to inculcate the intrinsic motivation of learning and self-confidence among the students. As a result, these positive developments facilitates the drive towards the 21st Century skills which are highly demanded to be instilled in the hearts and minds of the students. In this research paper, we are attempting to adopt the approach of ‘Rembat Pendapat’ (Bash Your Comments) using various ICT tools as platforms and as an interesting alternative approach to deliver the teaching and learning processes of good and critical communication skills. The findings of the research on this teaching and learning approach have shown that students do benefit to a great extent of this learning journey as it facilitated effectively the process of critical and creative thinking among them in understanding the various cultural and societal issues that were used as basis of discussions in the teaching processes

This paper attempts to offer some efforts that can be applied or employed by teachers in teaching learning activities to shape self-directed learners. It encompasses some theories about roles of teachers, roles of learners, the definition and characteristics of self-directed learners, the advantages of self-directed learning, and some possible tips of shaping self-directed learners. Some roles of teachers are discussed in this paper to highlight that teachers do not only teach and give some materials to be learned by their learners but have great tasks, like to be a monitor of students learning, motivator, organizer, and controller of pupil behaviour, provider of accurate language models, counselor and friend, needs analyst, material developer, and evaluator (Richard :1990:4). Hence, a teacher must encourage learners to take on greater degree of responsibility for their own successful learning (Hedge, 2000:34) and a teacher must motivate and help the learners to gain and develop the executive control of their learning strategies especially metacognitive strategies to teach them how to learn (Joyce, etal: 2009:16).Thus, some roles of learners become important to be included in this paper to assert that the burden of learning cannot be merely puored on the teacher but the learners have some roles need to be contemplated for the success of teaching and learning. Therefore, the integration of teacher - learner awareness toward their roles in teaching learning process can be effectively shaped to generate self-directed learners.

Self-directed learning (SDL), while essential to graduate student success and continued professional development beyond the degree, is rarely addressed intentionally in the college curriculum. In this mixed-method study with 91 participants from two counseling-related degree programs, researchers examined the impact of integrating a unit focused on SDL. Students in both online and face-to-face courses reported their learning and experiences with the topic. Findings suggest that intentionally exposing students to SDL allows them to understand the concept and grow in awareness of its importance. Similar gains were reported regardless of course delivery format. Student perspectives discussed include student appreciation of the process of collaboration for professional growth, student understanding of the centrality of SDL for ongoing development, and student motivation to utilize SDL with those they work with in order to and expand personal agency.

In the teaching and learning process, the roles of teachers and students will be balanced if there is good communication between them. However, learning methods from face-to-face to e-learning suddenly prompt the teachers to look for various alternatives to convey the material due to COVID-19 pandemic. The research analyzes the impact of COVID-19 on the learning process, especially Mandarin, in an elementary school. The research uses a descriptive-analytical method with questionnaires. The questionnaires are filled out by 34 students from the fifth grade in Bina Kusuma Elementary School, Jakarta. The research finds the positive impacts of elearning in the school regarding Mandarin learning. First, the subject is more interesting and easier to understand. Second, students can learn the right notes and pronunciation independently. Third, using WhatsApp and Zoom can help students recall previously learned vocabulary. Fourth, students can learn new vocabulary independently. Fifth, e-learning can motivate students to learn and gain experience from new learning methods. Sixth, students can manage their time in learning, so they become more independent. Last, students can study anywhere and anytime without time and space limits. However, the weakness of e-learning is the speed of the internet. It affects the students in obtaining the provided subject by the teachers.
