Collaborative numerical simulation of hot gas flow over turbine blade using C-Denton method and comparison with Delaval nozzle

Abstract The Steam turbine is widely used for generating electricity, in the thermal, nuclear and geothermal power generation systems. A wet loss is known as one of the degrading factors of the performance. To reduce the amount of liquid phase generated by condensation and atomization from nozzles, the prediction of the distribution of liquid mass flow rate inside the turbine is important. However, the quantitative understanding and the prediction method of the liquid flow inside the turbine remain unclear because physics inside a turbine is consisting of complex multiscale and multiphase events. In the present study, we proposed a theoretical model predicting the motion of droplet particles in gas flow based on Stokes number whose model does not require numerical simulation. We also conducted the numerical validation test using three-dimensional Eulerian-Lagrangian simulation for the problem with turbine blade T106. The numerical simulation shows that the particle motion is characterized by the Stokes number, that is consistent with the assumption of the theoretical model and previous studies. When Stokes number is smaller than one, the particle trajectory just follows the gas flow streamline and avoids the impacts on the surface of T106. With increasing Stokes number, the particles begin to deviate from the gas flow. As a result, many particles collide with the surface of T106 when the Stokes number is approximately one. When the Stokes number is extremely larger than one, particles move straight regardless of the background gas flow. The good agreements between the theoretical predictions and numerical experiment results justify the use of our proposed theoretical model for the prediction of the particle flow around the turbine blade.

High process efficiencies and high power-weight ratios are two major requirements for the economic operation of present day gas turbines. This development leads to extremely high turbine inlet temperatures and adjusted pressure ratios. The permissible hot gas temperature is limited by the material temperature of the blade. Intensive cooling is required to guarantee an economically acceptable life of the components which are in contact with the hot gas. Although film-cooling has been successfully in use for a couple of years along the suction side and pressure side, problems occur in the vicinity of the stagnation point due to high stagnation pressures and opposed momentum fluxes. In this area basic investigations are necessary to achieve a reliable design of the cooled blade. In the present calculations, a code for the coupled simulation of fluid flow and heat transfer in solid bodies is employed. The numerical scheme works on the basis of an implicit finite volume method combined with a multi-block technique. The full, compressible 3-D Navier-Stokes equations are solved within the fluid region and the Fourier equation for beat conduction is solved within the solid body region. An elliptic grid generator is used for the generation of the structured computational grid, which is a combination of various C-type and H-type grids. Results of a 3-D numerical simulation of the flow through a turbine blade cascade with and without cooling ejection at the leading edge through two slots are presented. The results are compared with 2-D numerical simulations and experimental results. It is shown that the distribution of the coolant on the blade surface is influenced by secondary flow phenomena which can not be taken into account by the 2-D simulations. Further coupled simulations with non-adiabatic walls in the leading edge region are performed with realistic temperature ratios and compared to the same case with adiabatic walls. It is shown that in the case of non-adiabatic walls the temperature on the blade wall is significantly lower than in the case of adiabatic walls.

Turbine blade surface is cooled by jet flow from extended exit holes (EEH). Cooling effectiveness is defined as temperature difference (TD) between the hot gas flow and the blade surface as a fraction of temperature difference between the hot gas flow and the coolant flow through EEH. Computational research using a commercial code has been done to predict performance of EEH for different design and operating conditions. Effectiveness has been determined over the blade surface when geometric conditions such as: angle between EEH and blade surface, location of EEH on the blade surface and exit-to-throat area ratio of EEH. Predicted effectiveness distributions agree well with available experimental results, confirming usefulness and advantage of computational approach to optimizing turbine blade cooling with EEH.

AbstractThe influences of loose gas on gas-solid flows in a large-scale circulating fluidized bed (CFB) gasification reactor were investigated using full-loop numerical simulation. The two-fluid model was coupled with the QC-energy minimization in multi-scale theory (EMMS) gas-solid drag model to simulate the fluidization in the CFB reactor. Effects of the loose gas flow rate, Q, on the solid mass circulation rate and the cyclone separation efficiency were analyzed. The study found different effects depending on Q: First, the particles in the loop seal and the standpipe tended to become more densely packed with decreasing loose gas flow rate, leading to the reduction in the overall circulation rate. The minimum Q that can affect the solid mass circulation rate is about 2.5% of the fluidized gas flow rate. Second, the sealing gas capability of the particles is enhanced as the loose gas flow rate decreases, which reduces the gas leakage into the cyclones and improves their separation efficiency. The best loose gas flow rates are equal to 2.5% of the fluidized gas flow rate at the various supply positions. In addition, the cyclone separation efficiency is correlated with the gas leakage to predict the separation efficiency during industrial operation.

In the present study, numerical simulation is carried out for impingement/effusion cooling on the leading edge of a turbine blade similar to an experimental model tested previously. The k-ε turbulence model is used, and simulation parameters are set in accordance with the experimental conditions, including temperature ratio, blowing ratio, and Reynolds number of the main stream. The accuracy and reliability of the simulation is verified by the experimental data, and the influence of various factors on fluid flow and heat transfer is analyzed in detail. The results indicate that the blowing ratio is one critical factor which affects the cooling effectiveness. The greater the blowing ratio is, the higher the cooling effectiveness is. In addition, a staggered-holes arrangement is numerically studied and compared with a line-holes arrangement. The results show that the staggered-holes arrangement has a lower temperature on the outer surface of the leading edge and has improved the cooling effectiveness.

Проведено численное исследование нестационарного турбулентного сверхзвукового течения в камере сгорания прямоточного воздушно-реактивного двигателя. Описана методика экспериментального измерения температуры на стенке осесимметричного канала в камере сгорания двигателя. Математическое моделирование обтекания исследуемой модели двигателя проводилось для скоростей набегающего потока M = 5 ... 7. Начальные и граничные условия задачи соответствовали реальному аэродинамическому эксперименту. Проанализированы результаты численного расчета. Рассмотрено изменение распределения температуры вдоль стенки канала с течением времени. Проведена оценка согласованности полученных экспериментальных данных с результатами математического моделирования. Purpose. The aim of this study is a numerical simulation of unsteady supersonic gas flow in a working path of ramjet engine under conditions identical to aerodynamic tests. Free stream velocity corresponding to Mach numbers M=5 ... 7 are considered. Methodology. Presented study addresses the methods of physical and numerical simulation. The probing device for thermometric that allows to recording the temperature values along the wall of internal duct was proposed. To describe the motion of a viscous heat-conducting gas the unsteady Reynolds averaged Navier - Stokes equations are considered. The flow turbulence is accounted by the modified SST model. The problem was solved in ANSYS Fluent using finite-volume method. The initial and boundary conditions for unsteady calculation are set according to conditions of real aerodynamic tests. The coupled heat transfer for supersonic flow and elements of ramjet engine model are realized by setting of thermophysical properties of materials. The reliability testing of numerical simulation has been made to compare the results of calculations and the data of thermometric experimental tests. Findings. Numerical simulation of aerodynamic tests for ramjet engine was carried out. The agreement between the results of numerical calculations and experimental measurements for the velocity in the channel under consideration was obtained; the error was shown to be 2%. The temperature values were obtained in the area of contact of the supersonic flow with the surface of the measuring device for the external incident flow velocities for Mach numbers M = 5 ... 7. The process of heating the material in the channel that simulated the section of the engine combustion chamber was analyzed. The temperature distribution was studied depending on the position of the material layer under consideration relative to the contact zone with the flow. Value. In the course of the work, the fields of flow around the model of a ramjet engine were obtained, including the region of supersonic flow in the inner part of axisymmetric channel. The analysis of the temperature fields showed that to improve the quality of the results, it is necessary to take into account the depth of the calorimetric sensor. The obtained results will be used to estimate the time of interaction of the supersonic flow with the fuel surface required to reach the combustion temperature.
