Introduction: Discursive hybridity in medical work

The purpose — to sum up the results of the work of the Department of Traumatology, Orthopedics and Disaster Medicine for 50 years. Material and methods. A detailed analysis was carried out of the stages of the Department development since its creation in 1971. The contribution of Professors Yu.V. Golyakhovskiy, A.S. Imamaliev, V.I. Zorya, N.V. Yarygin is highlighted. The achievements of the staff in scientific, educational, pedagogical and medical work over the past years are discussed. Results. Today, the overall bed fund of the Traumatology and Orthopedics bases of the Department is 300 beds. Only in 2019-2020, according to the results of studies conducted in clinics, 155 scientific articles and theses were published, 92 reports were made, two patents for inventions were obtained. Two textbooks, two training manuals on traumatology and orthopedics, and two monographs were published. The 4th and the 5th International Pirogov Forums were organized, with the leading Russian and foreign specialists as speakers. Conclusion. The Professors of the Department of Traumatology, Orthopedics and Disaster Medicine are highly qualified specialists, renowned in the sphere of Traumatology, Orthopedics and Disaster Medicine. The collective of the Department of Traumatology, Orthopedics and Disaster Medicine, relying on the previous experience and traditions, is energetic and confident on its anniversary.

The COVID-19 pandemic revealed several aspects of the problems directly related to the Ophthalmologists: damage to the eyes of patients with the SARS-CoV-2 virus; organization of medical work in a pandemic, including in a medical department redesigned to treat patients infected with SARS-CoV-2; side effects of personal protective equipment usage and anti-epidemic measures aimed to protect the organ of vision. Ocular manifestations were noted in 15–23% of children and 4–31% of adults with COVID-19. They were usually limited to acute conjunctivitis with «clear» discharge, hyperemia, edema and folliculosis of the conjunctiva, which reduced in 7–14 days without any treatment or on symptomatic therapy. The presence of SARS-CoV-2 in the tear and epithelium of the conjunctiva does not always correlated with the presence and severity of conjunctivitis and therefore had no clinical significance. There were also other problems associated with anti-epidemic measures (dry eye syndrome when wearing personal protective equipment, computer visual syndrome, etc.), which also requires attention of Ophthalmologists. PurposeThe aim of this article was to analyze how the presence of the elements that constitute organizational links are related to sensemaking in a cooperative system of medical work.Design/methodology/approachA content analysis was conducted following interviews with the managers of the cooperative, which is a member of the Brazilian cooperative system and one of the largest in the world. This analysis enabled the systematization of the categories that were identified through the coding of responses, aided by Atlas.ti 8.0 software.FindingsAfter the analysis, it was possible to resize the constitutive elements identified in the specialized literature into three categories: identification, cooperation and recognition. The proposed resizing does not preclude the presence of the constitutive elements identified in the analysis, but it evidences the presence of these elements in a contextualized manner, suggesting a model of an organic organizational link that is dependent on the relationship between subject–object (organization), in which the different perceptions of meanings affect identification, and this can strengthen or weaken the link in a constant process of resignification.Originality/valueWith regard to its theoretical relevance, the work helps to bring concepts related to organizational links and sensemaking closer together as a process in the realm of intersubjectivity. This provides evidence of the presence of constituent elements of ties in a contextualized manner, demonstrating that the interpretation of managers aids sensemaking in a process of circularity and resignification.

This discussion opens with a puzzling statement from the analects of Confucius: When you know it you know it, when you don’t know, you don’t know. This is knowledge. Reflecting on various Chinese approaches to zhi (知), knowing/knowledge, in this article we re-explore the terrain we two authors covered together in recent research on minority nationality medical systems of southwestern China. Our itineraries drew us near to ‘folk’ approaches to knowing, evident both in practical medical work and in classic written sources. We found ourselves in that frictional field of medicine where expertise is not just possession of knowledge, it is also skills, politics, ethics, manipulations, ideologies, and more than one set of ontological assumptions. Reminded of some ancient Chinese metaphysical philosophy, we were led by healers to conclude that knowing and good action cannot be separated. The article reports visits to three mountain herbalists, describing the particular ways they practice knowing and use their expertise to treat difficult disorders. On the road through a mostly unknowable world, such Chinese healers expect transformations in both those who know and in what can be known and enacted. These lives teach us how to know not through concepts but through the irreducible patterning of life.
