AbstractIt has been substantiated that Academic English must be an integral component of ESL students’ study at foreign languages departments to achieve success as professionals and be ready to realize themselves in a demanding world of today. We have defined the main problem on the way to it, namely the insufficient provision of the Academic English discipline in curricula of foreign language departments or its absence. The necessity to elaborate a syllabus for Academic English discipline being taught throughout all the course of study has been substantiated. Educational programs of Academic English in a number of foreign educational establishments of Great Britain, the USA, Canada and Australia have been analyzed and their defining features have been outlined. Strategies and conditions for effective teaching of Academic English have been characterized. It has been defined that in general, in spite of slight differences in the topics covered by different EAP programs, all of them are aimed at: developing strategies and vocabulary for reading and understanding academic texts; finding, understanding, describing and evaluating information for academic purposes; developing active listening and effective note-taking skills; building on language skills to describe problems and cause-and-effect; gathering a range of information, using the skills learned, to integrate it into a written report; engaging in peer-to-peer feedback before finalising one’s piece of academic work. Requirements for students’ achievements at the end of the course have been determined. As a basis for Academic English syllabus elaboration has been chosen a course by M. Hewings and C. Thaine (upper-intermediate and advanced levels). On its basis we have defined units to be covered by the course as well as skills to be developed. Recommendations as to better and more efficient teaching of the discipline have been outlined.

The acquisition of communicative competence in second and foreign languages requires the incorporation of verbal and non-verbal elements. Notwithstanding, few studies have performed empirical research into the acquisition of non-verbal signs. This research studies the learning of emblematic gestures for students of Spanish in the USA using an evolutionary analysis after instruction. Interactions between types of gestures ( common, different, and unique) based on the similarities with the first language and learning mechanisms in free and guided comprehension and production tasks are taken into account. The results indicate that although the detection and production of emblems improve with instruction, the progress is unequal: the categories different and unique obtain a higher rate of improvement than common emblems in specific tasks. In conclusion, it is essential for the teaching of gestures and non-verbal communication to consider, along with the non-verbal target language code, the non-verbal mother tongue code.

Abstract This paper examines translator training programmes in Hungary and the USA. Programmes operated by different institutions reveal greater differences of structure and content in the US than in Hungary. Most US programmes offer training in Spanish-English translation/interpreting, with a number of European and Asian languages also available, whereas in Hungary the dominant foreign languages are English and German, with other languages having a relatively marginal role. The number of training programmes, relative to economic needs, seems adequate in Hungary, while in the US there are far fewer than would be needed, in view of employment growth projections

A significant part of the scientific heritage of M. S. Bokarius, including reports, overviews, and reviews of the works of leading forensic medical examiners and lawyers from around the world has no bibliographic description and has not been put into scientific circulation. Throughout the pages of "Archives of Criminology and Forensic Medicine" and the Ukrainian-language journal: "Issues of Criminalistics and Forensic Science", the scientist reviewed more than 80 research papers. The peculiarity of the Editorial Board of Bokarius "Archives…" was that a significant number of reviews, overviews, etc., was published by the edition. Mykolai Serhiiovych is an author of more than 70 full-fledged analytical reports; and another 10 in the journal: "Issues of Criminalistics and Forensic Science". The scientist reviewed not only articles, textbooks, monographs by domestic authors, but also research papers of many foreign forensic scientists and criminologists from all over Europe, the USA, Japan, and countries of South America. Reports of scientific articles were reproduced in the journal in French, German and English, Italian and Spanish. All this became possible due to the fact that Mykolai Serhiiovych himself was a gifted linguist and spoke 17 foreign languages. The Article Purpose is a scientific search for new works by the scientist and a fundamental study of 5 issues of the "Archives of Criminology and ForensicMedicine" published in 1926—1927 and 6 issues of the "Issues of Criminalistics and Forensic Science" journal for 1931.

The method of early learning of foreign languages began to emerge as early as the 19th century as a branch of methodological science. The article deals with the problem of early learning of a foreign language. Methods and technologies of training are proposed. Also considered the psychological state of children. In this colloquium, the authors provide an update on the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s proposal for an International Early Learning and Child Well-being Study, the ‘first wave’ of which is now being implemented in three countries: England, Estonia and the USA. The authors argue that as the International Early Learning and Child Well-being Study progresses, its superficiality and pointlessness become more apparent. They also locate the International Early Learning and Child Well-being Study in a ‘global web of measurement’ centred on the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, whose aim appears to be the reduction of education to a purely technical exercise of producing common outcomes measured by common indicators, with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development acting as the global arbiter, assessor and governor of education. They call on the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development and its partners to start engaging with legitimate concerns and criticisms.
