Abstract Investigation of the tensile and fatigue properties of cast magnesium alloys, created by the heated mold continuous casting process (HMC), was conducted. The mechanical properties of the Mg-HMC alloys were overall higher than those for the Mg alloys, made by the conventional gravity casting process (GC), and especially excellent mechanical properties were obtained for the Mg97Y2Zn1-HMC alloy. This was because of the fine-grained structure composed of the α-Mg phases with the interdendritic LPSO phase. Such mechanical properties were similar levels to those for conventional cast aluminum alloy (Al84.7Si10.5Cu2.5Fe1.3Zn1 alloys: ADC12), made by the GC process. Moreover, the tensile properties (σUTS and εf) and fatigue properties of the Mg97Y2Zn1-HMC alloy were about 1.5 times higher than that for the commercial Mg90Al9Zn1-GC alloy (AZ91). The high correlation rate between tensile properties and fatigue strength (endurance limit: σl) was obtained. With newly proposed etching technique, the residual stress in the Mg97Y2Zn1 alloy could be revealed, and it appeared that the high internal stress was severely accumulated in and around the long-period stacking-order phases (LPSO). This was made during the solidification process due to the different shrinkage rate between α-Mg and LPSO. In this etching technique, micro-cracks were observed on the sample surface, and amount of micro-cracks (density) could be a parameter to determine the severity of the internal stress, i.e., a large amount to micro-cracks is caused by the high internal stress.

Semi-solid processing is recognized as an attractive alternative method for the near net-shape production of engineering components. Although there has been a significant progress in semi-solid processing of aluminum alloys, very limited information is available on semi-solid processing of magnesium alloys, except for the thixomolding process. Continuous casting process has been utilized to produce the billets with the desirable cross-section at a reduced production cost for many metals, such as steel, copper and aluminum alloys. It has also been commercially utilized to produce the aluminum billets with non-dendritic microstructure for subsequent thixocasting process. However, continuous casting of magnesium billets for semi-solid processing has not yet been commercialized due to the difficulties involved in casting of magnesium alloys. In the present study, a continuous casting process has been developed for the production of the cylindrical billets of magnesium alloys for the subsequent thixocasting process. In order to obtain the desired non-dendritic microstructure with an excellent degree of homogeneity both in microstructure and composition, an electromagnetic stirring system has been utilized. A continuous casting process has been proven to be an efficient way to produce the high quality billets of magnesium alloys for semi-solid processing. A prototype air conditioner cover was produced using the continuously cast billets of AZ91 alloy.

Microstructure assessment is crucial for the design and production of high-quality alloys such as cast aluminum alloy ingots. Along with the effect of a more homogeneous microstructure to result in much better mechanical properties, better as-cast alloy quality indicates a higher efficiency of the aluminum alloys production process. During the aluminum alloy solidification process many microstructural defects can occur, which deteriorate the mechanical properties and hence decrease the usability of such an ingot. Application of the electromagnetic field during the vertical continuous casting process significantly reduces occurrence of these defects. In the present study, EN AW 7075 alloy samples were cast with and without application of an electromagnetic field and examined regarding the microstructure, electrical conductivity, and changes in the phase composition. The obtained results clearly show that it is possible to decrease or avoid casting defects by the electromagnetic field application as verified by the microstructure characterization and quantification, electrical conductivity tests and differential thermal analysis (DTA).

In this paper, a new technique to produce cast iron tubes used for liners of auto engines has been developed and examined. The tubes with an outer diameter of 90 mm and a wall thickness of 14 mm were produced massively by horizontally continuous casting. There are the values of casting parameters and constructions of crystallizers recommended for the continuous casting process of cast iron tubes in our paper. The metallographic microstructure, chemical composition and the mechanical properties of the tubes were investigated. The results of our investigations were successfully used for producing cast iron tubes suitable for liners of auto engines.

The mechanical properties of the heat treated 65Mn steel that produced by CSP (Compact Strip Production) and conventional continuous casting process were investigated. Measured results showed that 65Mn steel produced by CSP exhibits higher hardness than that produced by conventional continuous casting process. The better mechanical property was attributed to fine-grained microstructures in the as-rolled CSP strips.

Mechanical properties of heat treated 30CrMo steel produced by CSP (Compact Strip Production) and conventional continuous casting process. Results showed that 30CrMo steel produced by CSP exhibits higher hardness than that produced by conventional continuous casting process. The higher hardness was attributed to fine-grained microstructures in the as-rolled CSP strips.
