AbstractIn the past few decades, it has extensively been written about corpus linguistics, which has owned its upswing mainly to the use of electronic corpora since the 1960s (Brown Corpus). Meanwhile, an increasing number of fields within general and applied linguistics (e.g. computational linguistics, discourse analysis, contrastive linguistics, diachronic and synchronic linguistics, language teaching and learning research, lexicology and lexicography, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, translation studies) have been using corpus linguistic methods. In linguistic research, the empirical and descriptive character of corpus-based linguistic analysis has also been given an emphasis.Thanks to the digital revolution of the 20th and 21st centuries the creation and provision of digital linguistic corpora is becoming accessible for smaller nations and language communities as well as for scientists. Nowadays, linguistic corpora cannot only be regarded as a tool to support language research and Translation Studies, but they also contribute to the enrichment of cultural diversity. The article focuses on international examples as well as on the most significant Hungarian corpora. The paper also discusses the criteria of corpus creation and several cultural aspects of corpus linguistics.

This chapter discusses traditions that inform the book's macroanalytic approach to digital literary studies as well as the strength of macroanalysis as a tool in the study of literature. It begins with an overview of some early concerns and contemporary criticisms regarding literary computing and the digital revolution. It then considers the emergence of the so-called “digital humanities” or humanities computing and shows that its foundation, computational text analysis, has come a long way. It also examines the contributions of computing humanists to humanities scholarship, such as the creation of digital archives, along with a number of useful tools that have been developed by computer scientists working in natural language processing, corpus linguistics, and computational linguistics. Finally, the chapter cites examples of projects working to apply the tools and techniques of text mining and corpus linguistics to literature. It suggests that, despite all of the achievements and the overwhelming sense of enthusiasm and collegiality that permeates the DH community, there is much more work to be done.

The objectives of this article are to set out the process and key areas for Siswati Subject Policy (SSP). Siswati is one of the languages in the Republic of South Africa that is granted the official status in terms of Section 6 of the Constitution. It is learned, taught and spoken at various provinces. The subject policy focuses on the development and management of the language from the theoretical understanding of its concepts to their practical stance. The policy is also expected to reinforce the government’s responsibilities of establishing the language infrastructures, providing equitable access to it and, enhancing language participation. The language subject policy covers all aspects of micro and macro linguistics, literature and onomastics. It covers teaching and learning, research, administration and community engagement. It is, however, more specific to focus on language in society and society in language, approaches and analytic strategies of the language as well as social interaction.

  The acoustic quality of classrooms has a strong influence on the teaching and learning process. This interference assessed using the impulsive technique to measure the rate of speech transmission (STI), reverberation time (RT) and sound definition (D50). These are the most relevant acoustic descriptors in the assessment of classrooms, where verbal exposure is the means of communication between teachers and students. The evaluation took place in two buildings of the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR), built in the 1960s and another in 2016. The measured values ​​of STI, provided in the classrooms' actual acoustic conditions, were used as an adjustment parameter for simulations made with the software ODEON. After carrying out the measurements and simulations, the dimensioning of improvements was possible. The acoustic simulations presented suggestions to qualify the quality of the classrooms' acoustic comfort, ensuring that teaching and learning to do not suffer losses due to the physical structure of the classrooms. The measured values ​​of STI, RT and D50 show that, in the old building, except for a single classroom that preserves the original ceiling that had a high sound absorption coefficient, it has reasonable values, below the ideal for classrooms, according to the IEC 60268-16 (2011) standard. The investigation showed that the rooms with a roof replaced by a PVC covering had a sharp drop in acoustic quality. The newest building has classrooms with proper acoustic comfort conditions.

The landscape in translation and interpreting is changing deeply and rapidly. For a long time, but not necessarily everywhere, translation was denied as a need (except for the political and religious powers), as effort (translation being defined as a kind of mechanical work, as substitution of words), and as a profession (translators embodying a subaltern position). Technology is bringing in certain changes in attitudes and perceptions with regards international, multilingual and multimodal communications. This article tries to define the changes and their consequences in the labelling and characterisation of the different practices. It is organised in five sections: first, we recall that translation and interpreting are only one option in international relations; then, we explain the different denials of translation in the past (or the refusal to recognize the different values of translation). In the third section, we consider how and to what extent technology is transforming today practices and markets. The ongoing changes do not boil solely to developments in Machine Translation (which started in the 1960s): community, crowdsourced/collaborative translation and volunteer translation encompass different practices. In many cases, users provide their own translations, with or without formal qualifications in translation. The evolution is not only technical but also economic and social. In addition, the fragmentation and the diversity of practices do have an impact on a multi-faceted market. In the fourth section, we emphasize that there are nowadays different concepts of translation and competitive paradigms in Translation Studies. Finally, we tackle the organisational challenge of the field, since the institutionalisation of translation and Translation Studies cannot remain the same as when there was a formal consensus on the concept of translation.

The article is the first to consider the translation of proper names used in M. Zhumabaev's poem Turkestan from Kazakh into English from the point of view of the principles of forenization and domestication. This famous work of the poet, which describes the whole essence of the Turkic peoples, is saturated with historical and culturally distinct anthroponyms and toponyms. The analytical part examines the question of how this information was reflected in the target language, how much the calorie was adopted or preserved. In general, the translation of proper names from Kazakh into English is one of the branches of domestic translation studies that needs scientific substantiation and research development.

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) enables ways to improve teaching in various disciplinary contexts, in higher education; this framework begins with measures of what learners actually learn in a formal course and identifies ways to improve the teaching. The SoTL framework was used to inform part of a recent grant application for a multi-institution, multi-year research project in the soil sciences. Using SoTL for projected grant-funded work involved the following, an in-depth exploration of the literature a light exploration of the local context (soil science and agronomy) variations on traditional SoTL (and innovative thinking from educational research) pragmatics and practical planning, frugal budget planning to inform a general sense of direction, with the details to be filled in later (if funded). This work suggests the importance of studying a framework in depth but applying it lightly to enable riffing in new directions.
