AbstractA new, practical and cost-effective route for scalable synthesis of 2-[(4-dodecyloxyphenyl)sulfonyl] butanoic acid, a key intermediate of a new cyan dye-forming coupler containing a sulfone group, was developed by adopting phenol as the starting material. The synthesis was accomplished in five steps with etherification, chlorosulfonation, reduction, nucleophilic reaction by C-S coupling and hydrolyzation. An important objective of the new synthetic route was the synthesis of 2-[4- (dodecyloxyphenyl)sulfonyl]butanoate. Overall yield obtained at optimized conditions increased to 66 %. The synthetic strategy was proven to be a process enabling rapid delivery of the target product with high purity.

Brass melting slag (20.38 wt.% Zn) was leached in sulfuric acid with concentration of (50 + 80) g/l H2SO4, leaching temperature of (30 + 60) °C for (30 + 120) min. The optimized conditions for 94.16% Zn extraction from brass melting slag were found as 70 g/l H2SO4, room temperature and 90 min. The leaching solution was purified by removal of Fe through Fe(OH)3 precipitation when adding ZnO to adjust pH value of 5. The solution was continuously cemented by Zn metal at 60 °C for 60 min to obtain Cu metal with high purity of 99 wt.% Cu. The purified solution with 37.64 g/l Zn was modified by Na2C03 to have pH value of about 6 and precipitation of ZnC03 (94.14 %).

<p>A practical method for the preparation of high-purity (<em>R, R</em>)-dexmethylphenidate free base was developed. The method involves a substitution reaction of 2-chloropyridine and phenylacetonitrile via hydrolysis followed by hydrogenation, configuration inversion, chiral resolution, methyl esterification, and salification to give high-purity dexmethylphenidate hydrochloride. The hydrochloride salt was then neutralized by powder sodium hydroxide overnight to give dexmethylphenidate free base with over 99% purity. This method can be used for the industrial production of the dexmethylphenidate patch API, which could also be further applied for the preparation of other types of amino acid ester free bases.</p>

High purity hydrogen and solid-state byproducts are produced using a proposed plasma-activated aluminum and water reactions approach. These byproducts could be transformed into pure gamma Al2O3 powder material, while hydrogen can be used for electricity generation. Various chemical methods can be used for the synthesis of gamma alumina, but most could result in high levels of remaining impurities. Boehmite is a cost-effective starting material for the production of high-purity Al2O3. Herein, we present a novel method for the synthesis of boehmite and its transformation into high-specific-surface-area γ-alumina. Specifically, this method implicates the direct reaction between distilled water and plasma-treated aluminum powder. The results show the structural and morphological changes of the byproduct of the aluminum/water reaction to boehmite and γ-Al2O3 after a simple heating procedure (at 280 and 500 °C respectively). The high-purity hydrogen produced during the aluminum/water reaction can be used for the high-efficiency and environmentally friendly production of electrical energy.

Atazanavir is one of the most prescribed HIV-1 protease inhibitors approved by the FDA. It was the first protease inhibitor approved for once-a-day dosing to treat AIDS due to good oral bioavailability and favorable pharmacokinetic profile. This research aims to develop a new synthetic cost effective process for biaryl-hydrazine unit {tert-butyl 2-[4-(2-pyridinyl)benzyl]hydrazinecarboxylate} of atazanavir on a large scale. The synthesis involved palladium catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura coupling of 2-chloropyridine and (4-cyanophenyl)boronic acid followed by DIBAL-H reduction of cyano group to aldehyde which is then treated with tert-butyl carbazate to furnish hydrazone subsequently in situ reduction with NaBH4. A large scale synthesis of biaryl-hydrazine unit of atazanavir was accomplished in three steps with 71% overall yield. We have developed a short and efficient synthesis of atazanavir key intermediate biaryl-hydrazine unit. The process does not require the usage of Grignard reagent, expensive catalyst, protection/deprotection of aldehyde moiety and catalytic hydrogenation.

Sample clean-up remains the most time-consuming and error-prone step in the whole analytical procedure for aflatoxins (AFTs) analysis. Herein, an automated and high-throughput sample clean-up platform was developed with a disposable, cost-effective immunoaffinity magnetic bead-based kit. Under optimized conditions, the automated method takes less than 30 min to simultaneously purify 20 samples without requiring any centrifugation or filtering steps. When coupled to ultra-high performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection, this new analysis method displays excellent accuracy and precision as well as outstanding efficiency. Furthermore, an interlaboratory study was performed in six laboratories to validate the novel protocol. Mean recovery, repeatability, reproducibility, and Horwitz ratio values were within 91.9%–107.4%, 2.5%–7.4%, 2.7%–10.6%, and 0.26%–0.90, respectively. Results demonstrate that the developed sample clean-up platform is a reliable alternative to most widely adopted clean-up procedures for AFTs in cereals and oils.
