Collaborative Authorship and Postmigration in Jonas Hassen Khemiri’s Novel Montecore

Abstract Montecore. En unik tiger (2006) stages its own making through the joint authorship of Kadir, a friend of Abbas’, and Jonas, a young writer and Abbas’ son. Their collaboration aims at a novel about Abbas, who migrated from Tunisia to Sweden, now a missing person. The interpretation of his life proves to be a conflicting ground for the co-authors because of their generational differences. This article proposes an analysis of Montecore building upon the notion of collaborative or multiple authorship (Stillinger 1991; Love 2002), and upon the discussion in Scandinavia and in Germany on contemporary migration and postmigration literature. Through a metafictional collaborative authorship – a so far neglected dimension in the study of Montecore – Jonas Hassen Khemiri depicts a young author’s ambivalent feelings towards his father and his story. Abbas has vanished from the family, but his special gift to Jonas, through Kadir’s mediation, deals with a linguistic talent that defies the rules of Swedish, showing the power of language to invent, and to imagine a different and less oppressive order.

Adapting Bourdieu's theory of capitals, the concept of technocultural capital is introduced to study interactions with, and relationships to, technology. The concept is employed in the study of mass media use and consumption in the context of the family. Pronounced gender and generational differences in the levels of technocultural capital were identified. An understanding of these differences and how they emerge is crucial, as technocultural capital is a valuable and powerful concept for understanding interactions, not only within the family setting, but also in other contexts such as education and work, where it can impact on educational and career choices and social mobility.

<p>This study investigated the family as a site for literacy. The theoretical approach is that all literacy is situated in a social context. Eleven parents were interviewed about literacy use and practices both in their present families. The parents were from India, Sri Lanka, Britain and Aotearoa/ New Zealand. The study explored generational differences as well as aspects of diversity among the families. While there were similarities in the uses of literacy across the generations, diversity was evident in the differences in purpose between the Pakeha families and the others. For the Paheka the purpose of reading was for pleasure while the other parents stressed the importance of reading for moral messages and guides to behaviour. Parents spoke more often about reading than about writing, they recalled favourite books, especially those by Enid Blyton, and reported stories they told their own children. It is suggested that teachers might explore their own literacy experiences to better understand the issues of both literacy and diversity.</p>

Under the background of smoke-free environment, based on the survey data of CMDS 2013 and 2018, this study explored the differences in family migration and residence decisions of migrants living in different neighborhoods, and analyzed the influence of family migration scale on residence decision by using the hierarchical linear model (HLM). The results show that: Peer effects exist in same neighborhoods, while neighborhood effects exist in different neighborhoods, but the effect sizes and directions of various neighborhood factors are different; Family income level is still an important factor affecting the family migration and residence decisions, and the family migration scale has a positive effect on residence decision; There are significant inter-generational differences in family migration and residence decisions, but the conditions for the differences are different; Good neighborhood smoke-free environments and abundant neighborhood activities are helpful to strengthen the family migration and residence decision of migrant workers.

Remittances, money, or products sent to relatives at a distance is a common practice Filipino Americans use to retain ties and assist their family members living in the Philippines. This study investigated first-generation Filipino Americans' remittance practices and secondgeneration's intention to remit, to better understand the dynamics around remittance and generational differences. Qualitative interviews revealed complex motivations and reasons for remitting money and balikbayan boxes to the Philippines, and they shed light on the multifaceted cultural identity of both generations, including the tradition of remitting, giving back, and the family pressure to do so. Secondgeneration respondents felt less pressure to remit and reported weaker ties to their heritage and to the Philippines itself. FCS professionals are called to investigate and understand the minority experience of remittance and how it can shape family values.

The difficult demographic situation and the search for an effective model of demographic and family policy have revived the discourse about the Russian family model. The article aims at describing general and specific characteristics of the desired family model in different generations to identify vectors of transformation of the family institution and directions of the family policy. The authors conclusions are based on the statistical data, all-Russian population censuses (2002 and 2010), micro-census (2015), sample surveys of the Federal State Statistics Service, and the results of the authors research conducted in 2019. Ideas about the desired family model change under the influence of cultural and social-economic factors and differ between generations; therefore, a comparison of the opinions of different generations allow to identify transformations of the desired family model and directions of family policy. Family is still a significant value for Russians, but the model of the desired family changes towards nuclearization, mosaic family life models, decreasing role of formal mechanisms for regulating marriage, and increasing share of people who do not want a family. The discourse about the traditional family model, which is the basis of the Russian family policy, is supported by many Russians only formally. In general, Russians ideas about the desired family model change in the direction of liberalizing norms and attitudes to marriage and family life, and there are serious generational differences. Methods of multivariate statistical analysis allowed the authors to identify typological groups that differ in their ideas about the happy family.

The main purpose of this research is to address the changes that the family, which is seen as the smallest unit of society, is experiencing today, and in particular the problems caused by generational differences among family members, using the example of Generation Z. At the same time, the most important dimension of this discussion, which constitutes the scope of the study, is the disagreement and lack of communication, which is observed in general in domestic relations and often between generations and in particular the changing family perception of Generation Z and their problems with their parents. Interviews with 16 students from 16 Faculties of Van Yüzüncü Yıl University constituted the sample of the study in order to reveal both the perception of the mentioned generation towards the family and the problems in family relations. The results of the interview were recorded on computer and analyzed using descriptive analysis. The most important conclusion reached in the study was that the perceptions, attitudes and behaviors of the generations who grew up in different conditions differed, especially in their approaches to family values, and because of this differentiation, the younger generations experienced serious problems within the family.

The present study develops a process model of succession involving steps undertaken to prepare the family business for succession. The model examined multiple spheres of influence, including individual, group (family), organizational, and critical resource providers, as well as investigating the moderating effects of generational differences. Tests of this model used responses from a nationwide survey of family business owner/managers. The results support research expectations that various factors, especially family influence, positively affect the extent of succession planning. Further evidence is provided indicating that generation moderates revealed relationships.

This chapter focuses on a family network and considers how the various sites of political engagement — the ‘public’ sphere, the parochial realm, and the family — functioned together in the construction of subjectivities and political experience. It examines the conceptualization of female influence, the gendered complexities of collaborative authorship, the construction of corporate family identities, the problematic position of women within the civic sphere (as compared to the parochial sphere), and the significance of gendered space for the constitution of female political subjectivity. Since the publication of Clare Midgley's acclaimed study of female anti-slavery activism, the involvement of women in the campaign to liberate slaves in Britain's colonial territories has become a firmly established feature of our understanding of nineteenth-century political culture. This chapter analyses the family network involved in one particular anti-slavery organization: the Society for the Extinction of the Slave Trade and the Civilization of Africa (African Civilization Society), whose founder and leading light, Thomas Fowell Buxton, presented the famous ladies' anti-slavery petition to parliament in 1833.
