AbstractFree Space Optics (FSO) communication provides attractive bandwidth enhancement with unlicensed bands worldwide spectrum. However, the link capacity and availability are the major concern in the different atmospheric conditions. The reliability of the link is highly dependent on weather conditions that attenuate the signal strength. Hence, this study focuses to mitigate the weather and geographic effects using iterative optimization on FSO communication. The optimization maximizes the visibility distance while guaranteeing the reliability by minimizing the Bit Error Rate (BER). The wireless optical communication system is designed for the data rate of 10 Gbps. The performance of the proposed wireless optical communication is compared against the literature in terms of visibility distance, quality factor, BER, and Eye diagram at different atmospheric conditions. The simulation results have shown that the proposed work has achieved better performance.

The performance of atmospheric communication system is limited by the atmospheric turbulence. In this paper, we present a practical 10Gbps DPSK transmission system for free space optical (FSO) communication with low error probability and wide-opening eye diagram. Compared to OOK modulation, DPSK format is a more effective way to resist the atmospheric turbulence. In addition, we designed parameters of this modulation system to be varied as the channel situation changed to achieve an optimized performance. The experiment results show that such a DPSK system could greatly overcome the atmospheric turbulence.

Transmitter with quantum cascade laser for free space optics communication system The paper presents results of experimental tests of the quantum cascade laser from Alpes Lasers company in terms of its application in the optic communication system in an open space. The measurements involved the current - voltage characteristics while measuring also the average power of emitted radiation, and spectral characteristics for different temperatures and different laser pulse durations. The duration of laser pulses was matched to parameters used in telecommunication interfaces. The construction of the transmitter module which uses the tested laser is also presented.

AbstractFree space optics (FSO) communication is a short-distance wireless communication system. It can be used where optical fiber cables cannot be implemented. In FSO, the energy beam is accumulated and transmitted through space instead of guiding through an optical cable. FSO communication provides data at a rate of Gbps; it is highly secure because it uses narrow beam to transmit data from transmitter to receiver, uses license-free operation, has no electromagnetic interference and has quick installation. This paper gives an overview of performance of FSO communication with environmental attenuation.
