Abstract The paper analyzes some present and future trends in education, zooming in on the English class, through the impact of the most influential product of the human mind, the Internet. Extensive research is currently being done on the roles of the Internet upon our society, with special emphasis on education. I follow some of these research projects’ threads and offer up-to-date insights into the debates and controversies the Internet has awoken. As a result of scanning some of the future educational trends, the conclusion I draw is that of an obvious compromise the English teacher has to sign: teaching both classical and modern competencies but learning to use the digital language of today’s generation, while not overlooking the students’ emotional needs.

Abstract This paper examines the impact of uncertainties in the future trends of mortality on annuity values in Singapore's compulsory purchase market. We document persistent population mortality improvement trends over the past few decades, which underscores the importance of longevity risk in this market. Using the money's worth framework, we find that the life annuities delivered expected payouts valued at 1.019–1.185 (0.973–1.170) per dollar of annuity premium for males (females). Even in a low mortality improvement scenario, the annuities provide an expected value exceeding 0.950. This suggests that participants in the national annuity pool have access to attractively priced annuities, regardless of sex, product, and premium invested.

Authentication is the way of identifying an individual. The techniques used to accomplish such practice strongly depend on the involved parties, their interconnection, and the required level of security. In all cases, authentication is used to enforce property protection, and may be specifically intended for the copyright protection of digital contents published on the Internet. This chapter introduces the basic concepts of authentication, explaining their relationship with property protection. The basic functionalities of challenge-response frameworks are presented, together with several applications and the future trends.

The aims of this research were identify: 1) The types of code switching, 2) Find out the factors influence the teachers to switch English into Indonesian or the opposite, 3) Analyze the impact of teacher’s code switching for the students. This research was held on SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Ponorogo. The research design was qualitative research especially case study. Research used observation and interview as the data collection technique in this research. To analyze the data the writer transcribing interviewing, scanning material, typing up field notes, coding process, making qualitative narrative, and making interpretation the data. Based on finding, the types of code switching which was used by English teacher at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Ponorogo include tag code switching, inter sentential code switching, and intra sentential code switching with different quantities. The factor influence teachers to conducted switch English to Indonesian such as the students understanding was the big factor and the students characteristic were different, they had not same ability in English. Finally, the researcher proposed suggestion to the teachers to maintain using code switching during teaching and learning English in classroom, but continue to prioritize English as the primary. They could switch Bahasa Indonesia, but when used for certain purposes only.

Cholera, an acute intestinal infection caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae, remains a major public health problem in many parts of Africa, Asia, and Latin America. A mathematical model is developed, to assess the impact of increasing antimicrobial resistance of Vibrio cholerae on the future trends of the cholera epidemic. Equilibrium states of the model are determined and their stabilities have been examined. The impacts of increasing antimicrobial resistance of Vibrio cholerae on the future trends of cholera epidemic have been investigated through the reproductive number. Numerical results are provided to support analytical findings.

Technology has always played a role in the development of gambling practices and continues to provide new market opportunities. One of the fastest growing areas is that of Internet gambling (also known as online gambling). Examples include online lotteries, online casinos, online bookmakers, online betting exchanges, online poker sites, etc. The impact of such technologies should not be accepted uncritically, particularly as there may be areas of potential concern based on what is known about problem gambling offline. This chapter therefore has three aims. Firstly, it highlights salient factors in the rise of Internet gambling (i.e., accessibility, affordability, anonymity, convenience, escape immersion/dissociation, disinhibition, event frequency, asociability, and simulation). Secondly, it examines whether Internet gambling is ‘doubly addictive’ given research that suggests that the internet can be addictive itself. Finally, it overviews some of the main social concerns about the rise of Internet gambling before examining a few future trends in relation to remote gambling more generally.

Nowadays, most of electronic applications, including e-learning, are based on the Internet and the Web. As the Web advances, applications should progress in accordance with it. People in the Internet world have started to talk about Web 2.0. This chapter discusses how the concepts of Web 2.0 can be transferred to e-learning. First, the new trends of the Web (Web 2.0) are introduced and the Web 2.0 technologies are reviewed. Then, it is analysed how Web 2.0 can be transferred and applied to the learning process, in terms of methodologies and tools, and taking into account different scenarios and roles. This article analyses the outputs of an institutional approach to student engagement that created sixty staff-student partnership opportunities aiming to enhance the learning experience. The Student Fellows Scheme awarded bursaries to students in return for co-leading a project in the broad area of educational development. The projects could be evaluations, research projects or interventions. This paper describes a systematic review of the final outputs of the Student Fellow projects and depicts the extent of staff-student partnerships and the impact of the scheme, demonstrating that the majority of projects are programme-focused, with students as the main beneficiaries. Whilst a key motivation of this review was to analyse the extent of staff-student partnerships, the lack of reference to partnership in many reports illustrated the limitations of the methodology. This review has facilitated a reorganisation of the scheme and developed a structure for continuing analysis of it into the future.
