AbstractAcross the United States, the number of blacks entering and graduating from college is at its highest level. Seemingly, progress is being made, however, probing individual students about their experiences may reveal that appearance of diversity in higher education does not translate into acceptance from the majority group. This article discusses the educational journey of the author. Through his experiences, the impact of the obstacles placed in the way of blacks who wish to successfully advance in school is exposed at multiple levels (e.g. postsecondary, graduate, etc.). Additionally, effective methods for overcoming barriers and moving forward in academia are discussed.

In this article, I review the role of college admissions tests in the United States and consider the fairness issues surrounding their use. The two main tests are the SAT, first administered in 1926, and the ACT, first given in 1959. Scores on these tests have been shown to contribute to the prediction of college performance, but their role in the admissions process varies widely across colleges. Although test scores are consistently listed as one of the most important admissions factors in national surveys of postsecondary institutions, an increasing number of schools have adopted “test-optional” policies. At these institutions, test score requirements are seen as a barrier to campus diversity because of the large performance gaps among ethnic and socioeconomic groups. Fortunately, the decentralized higher education system in the United States can accommodate a wide range of admissions policies. It is essential, however, that the impact of admissions policy changes be studied and that the resource implications of these changes be thoroughly considered.

Abstract The phenomenological approach to racialization needs to be supplemented by a hermeneutics that examines the history of the various categories in terms of which people see and have seen race. An investigation of this kind suggests that instead of the rigid essentialism that is normally associated with the history of racism, race predominantly operates as a border concept, that is to say, a dynamic fluid concept whose core lies not at the center but at its edges. I illustrate this by an examination of the history of the distinctions between the races as it is revealed in legal, scientific, and philosophical sources. I focus especially on racial distinctions in the United States and on the way that the impact of miscegenation was negotiated leading to the so-called one-drop rule.

The purpose of this study was to explore undergraduate Chinese international students’ perceptions about their classroom experiences in the United States institutions of higher education. Double consciousness, introduced by W.E.B. Du Bois, was used as the theoretical framework for this study. After analyzing the 15 interviews to Chinese international students, the following areas were discussed: comparison of classroom experiences in the United States and China; positive and negative classroom practices in the U.S.; perceptions of the way American faculty and students perceived Chinese international students; and double consciousness of Chinese international students. While most of the participants preferred the American classroom practices over practices in China, their perceptions about the way American students and faculty perceived them were conflicting. The concept of double consciousness also helped to illustrate the internal identity conflict of being Chinese and being “Americanized.”

Aging in the United States will be defined by differences in health and longevity among populations. Diversity among the aged population is expected to increase. While investigators must contend with generalizability to enhance rigor, biomedical research holds great promise in exploring determinants of health for populations groups. Biomedical research explores the impact of various determinants on health and longevity. Health disparities research related to aging serves as an important scientific approach for researchers to maintain clarity in generalizability, with a focus on a breadth of determinants in multiple levels of analysis. Moreover, health disparities research related to aging holds the biomedical research enterprise accountable to principles of equity for understanding and addresing the health and aging of disproportionately affected population groups in society.

International sisters have several options available to stay legally in the United States, including U.S. citizenship and legal permanent residency. This chapter describes the various visa statuses of the international sisters studied in this book, the impact of their legal status on their ministry and life, and some avenues of legal support available to international sisters. The chapter describes some of their challenges with obtaining legal status and provides an introduction to a sample of national Catholic organizations whose mission is to serve immigrants, and in some cases, international sisters. The chapter also includes an introduction to several national ethnic- and racially specific organizations of sisters as well as institutions of higher education that provide support for the international sisters.

Why have accounts of botched executions not played a larger role in the struggle to end capital punishment in the United States? In the twentieth century, when methods of execution became increasingly controlled and sterilized, botched executions would seem to have had real abolitionist potential. This article examines newspaper coverage of botched executions to determine and describe the way they were presented to the public and why they have contributed little to the abolitionist cause. Although botched executions reveal pain, violence, and inhumanity associated with state killing, newspaper coverage of these events neutralizes the impact of that revelation. Throughout the last century, newspapers presented botched executions as misfortunes rather than injustices. We identify three distinct modes by which newspaper coverage neutralized the impact of botched executions and presented them as misfortunes rather than as systemic injustices: (1) the dual narratives of sensationalism and recuperation in the early years of the twentieth century, (2) the decline of sensationalism and the rise of “professionalism” in the middle of the century, and (3) the emphasis on “balanced” reporting toward the end of the century.

March 2020 became a pivoting moment for higher education in the United States, when the COVID-19 pandemic forced colleges and universities to switch to remote delivery of instruction within weeks. The impact of this event is deep and far-reaching. There is already a deluge of articles about how most faculty and students have had to adjust to a new way of teaching and learning--or how administrators have had to brace for financial losses. However, little has been written about the situations librarians and library staff are facing.

This quantitative research study discovered and identified the degree of relationships between the domains of multiple intelligences: (a) interpersonal, (b) intrapersonal, and (c) linguistic intelligences, and (d) leadership and demographic characteristics such as, (a) age, (b) gender and (c) ethnicity among higher education faculty. Using a survey instrument, primary data was collected from a sample of 205 faculty members within the United States. Furthermore, the researcher examined and analyzed certain aspects of the field of leadership, and the impact Gardner’s multiple intelligences may or may not have on leadership selection, training and development based on the results obtained. This paper provides a summary of the study and its results along with possible implications and recommendations for administrators, managers and leaders in academia.
