Abstract An analytical expression for the standard deviation of Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) estimation is derived. It applies to the case where the estimator uses sine fitting. It is shown that, in common circumstances, it is inversely proportional to the actual value of THD, the signal-to-noise ratio and the square root of the number of samples. The proposed expression is validated both with numerical simulations and an experimental setup using a Monte Carlo procedure.

Abstract In crustal refraction experiments, the crucial deeply refracted and head wave arrivals often have a low signal-to-noise ratio. A method to aid in the picking of noisy refraction data is presented which is applicable to any branch of a seismic section whose waveform is approximately invariant throughout the branch. The technique exploits the spatial correlation of arrivals and is based on the lateral coherency which results if the refracted arrivals are aligned by applying appropriate time shifts to each trace of the branch. The alignment of arrivals occurs iteratively and is accomplished through a cross-correlation of each trace with the stack of the section of the previous iteration. The iteration yielding the section with the highest degree of lateral coherency (semblance) is used to extract the travel-time pick of each trace. The pick, plus a possible d.c. component, is the negative of the time shift required to achieve arrival alignment. Two modifications can improve the performance of the picking routine. To prevent a cycle skipping problem, a Monte Carlo technique is implemented in which the cross-correlation function is transformed into a probability distribution so that the lag corresponding to the maximum cross-correlation is most probably selected. Second, to increase the coherency of the arrivals, a spectral balancing technique is applied in either the time or frequency domain. The picking routine is applied to both a synthetic and real data example, and the results suggest that the routine can be applied successfully to data with a signal-to-noise ratio as low as one. Also, the Monte Carlo procedure together with spectral balancing increases the final semblance over that obtained with the unmodified method.

This article presents the design and construction of a wireless electrocardiograph of one derivation using active electrodes, the stages of adequacy of the signal originated from the electrodes, the digitization stage, digital filtering, transmission using Bluetooth towards an Android mobile device, where there is located an apk which was developed using the IDE Processing, are described. The tests determine that noise and harmonic distortion do not affect in a significant way the system, also prove a right functionality from the system through comparisons made using signal to noise ratio (SNR), total harmonic distortion (THD) and signal to noise ratio and distortion (SINAD) from multiple electrocardiography signals which were acquire by the prototype and a Cassy Sensor ECG device used as a reference.

We derived formulas for the tomographic resolution limits [Formula: see text] of diffraction data. Resolution limits exhibited that diffractions can provide twice or more the tomographic resolution of specular reflections and therefore led to more accurate reconstructions of velocities between layers. Numerical simulations supported this claim in which the tomogram inverted from diffraction data was noticeably more resolved compared to that inverted from specular data. The specular synthetics were generated by sources on the surface, and the diffraction data were generated by buried diffractors. However, this advantage is nullified if the intensity and signal-to-noise ratio of the diffractions are much less than those of the pervasive specular reflections.

Parasitic scattering caused by apertures is a well-known problem in X-ray analytics, which forces users and manufacturers to adapt their experimental setup to this unwanted phenomenon. Increased measurement times due to lower photon fluxes, a lower resolution caused by an enlarged beam stop, a larger beam defining pinhole-to-sample distance due to the integration of an antiscatter guard and generally a lower signal-to-noise ratio leads to a loss in data quality. In this presentation we will explain how the lately developed scatterless pinholes called SCATEX overcome the aforementioned problems. SCATEX pinholes are either made of Germanium or of Tantalum and momentarily have a minimum diameter of 30µm. Thus, these novel apertures are applicable to a wide range of different applications and X-ray energies. We will show measurements which were performed either at home-lab small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) systems such as the NANOSTAR of Bruker AXS or at synchrotron beamlines. At the PTB four-crystal monochromator beamline at BESSY II data was collected for a comparison of conventional pinholes, scatterless Germanium slit systems and SCATEX pinholes. At the Nanofocus Endstation P03 beamline at PETRA III we compared the performance of our SCATEX apertures with conventional Tungsten slit systems under high flux density conditions.

This research aims to depict the comparative performance of micropollutants’ removal by FeSO4- and zero-valent iron (Fe(0))-catalytic Fenton oxidation and to explore the possibilities of minimising the sludge production from the process. The emerging micropollutants used for the study were gabapentin, sulfamethoxazole, diuron, terbutryn and terbuthylazine. The Taguchi method, which evaluates the signal-to-noise ratio instead of the standard deviation, was used to develop robust experimental conditions. Though both FeSO4- and Fe(0)-catalytic Fenton oxidation were able to completely degrade the stated micropollutants, the Fe(0)-catalytic Fenton process delivered better removal of dissolved organic carbon (DOC; 70%) than FeSO4 catalytic Fenton oxidation (45%). Fe(0)-catalytic Fenton oxidation facilitated heterogeneous treatment functions, which eliminated toxicity from contaminated solution and there was no recognisable sludge production.

Lock-in amplification using ac modulation and second-harmonic detection is routinely employed in such techniques as ac polarography, ac voltammetry, and inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy (IETS). Properties of the modulation source are shown in the present IET studies to limit the obtainable signal-to-noise ratio of a spectrum. A single inelastic electron tunneling junction is used to demonstrate the effect of various commercial modulation sources on the IET spectrum of benzoic acid on alumina. With all other parameters being held constant, the signal-to-noise ratio of the IET spectrum is found to be inversely correlated with the total harmonic distortion of the modulation source.

A new procedure is proposed to optimize the intercarrier spacing and wavelength selective switch (WSS) bandwidth for superchannels, using a Monte Carlo simulation. We perform an exhaustive assessment of the optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) penalties due to the optical filtering and intercarrier crosstalk, and concluded that the optimum intercarrier spacing is at most 1.1 GHz larger than the Nyquist bandwidth and the results show how the number of cascaded WSSs influences the intercarrier spacing.

This letter studies the performance of a single gateway LoRa system in the presence of different interference considering the imperfect orthogonality effect. It utilizes concepts of stochastic geometry to present a low-complexity approximate closed-form model for computing the success and coverage probabilities under these challenging conditions. Monte Carlo simulation results have shown that LoRa is not as theoretically described as a technology that can cover few to ten kilometers. It was found that in the presence of the combination of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and imperfect orthogonality between spreading factors (SF), the performance degrades dramatically beyond a couple of kilometers. However, better performance is observed when perfect orthogonality is considered and SNR is not included. Furthermore, the performance is annulus dependent and slightly improves at the border of the deployment cell annuli. Finally, the coverage probability declines exponentially as the average number of end devices grows.
