AbstractFiscal policy has recently been encouraged to increase competition, monitor Africa’s debt to GDP and improve its economic growth. Importantly, the present fiscal situation in most African countries will seem to have significant consequences for both public and private investments. This paper examines whether fiscal policy and investment matters for GDP growth in a panel of forty-eight (48) African countries for the period 1970-2017. The empirical evidence explored is based on the Fixed Effect (FE) and System Generalised Method of Moment (GMM) estimators. The results suggest that public and private investment among selected African countries has a positive impact on GDP growth. The findings further indicate that fiscal policies must play a more prominent role in sustaining potential private and public investments, especially as debt servicing among the African’ countries examined may have serious shortcomings on sustainable economic growth

This paper uses the Co-integrating VAR’s [Johansen (1988); Ericsson, et al. (1998)] to examine the relationship between economic growth, public investment, and private investment in the presence of unit roots. Exogeneity is not implicitly assumed but explicitly tested for, and evidence of co-integration and feedback between public and private investment leads to a model in the form of a parsimonious VAR. The analysis is conducted using 37 years of annual data for Pakistan. The analysis suggests that public investment has a positive impact on private investment, and that economic growth drives both private and public investment as predicted by the accelerator-based models.

Abstract This paper provides new evidence to contribute to the current debate on the relative impact of public and private investment on economic growth and the crowding effect between the two components of investment in South Africa. Using annual data from 1970 to 2017, the study applies the recently developed Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL)-bounds testing approach to cointegration. The study finds that private investment has a positive impact on economic growth both in the long run and short run, while public investment has a negative effect on economic growth in the long run. Further, in the long run, gross public investment is found to crowd out private investment, while its infrastructural component is found to crowd in private investment. The results of the study also reveal that both gross public investment and non-infrastructural public investment crowd out private investment in the short run. Overall, the study finds private investment to be more important than public investment in the South African economic growth process and that the importance of infrastructural public investment in stimulating private investment in the long run cannot be over-emphasized.

This paper aims to put the spotlight on the evolution of both public and private investment in Zimbabwe, as they responded to the economic policies implemented from 1965 through to 2011. With the adopted inward-looking policy in 1965, the massive core of infrastructural growth in public investment became a catalyst to the high level of private investment growth. The perpetuated market-intervention policy in 1980 later resulted in the growth of public investment. Despite the adoption of a market economy in the 1990s, the envisaged cut in public investment did not occur. Very few State enterprises had been privatised by the year 2000; and there was a reversal to the market-intervention strategy during the period 2000 to 2011. Notwithstanding the government’s efforts to boost both private and public investment in Zimbabwe, the country still faces a number of challenges, as do many other African countries. These challenges include, amongst others: (i) The high national debt overhang; ii) low business confidence; (iv) liquidity constraints; (v) low industrial competitiveness; and (vi) an inadequate infrastructure.

Despite the fact that the government is the main actor of economic development, it also invites private parties to be actively involved in the economic development. The main objective of public and private investment is economic development. But the ultimate goal of investment and economic development itself is to improve the welfare of the community. This study seeks to investigate the effect of private and public investment on economic growth. Furthermore, it also investigates the impact the investment on the community welfare either directly or indirectly through economic growth by way of analyzing the data on private and public investment, economic growth, and the human development index of local governments in Indonesia for the period from 2012 to 2016. Hypotheses were tested using PLS (Partial Least Squares). The results show that both private and public investment directly influence economic growth and indirectly affect the welfare of the people through economic growth. Direct test results also show the positive effect of economic growth on community welfare.

This paper aims to examine the relationship between trade policies and economic growth. In order to test whether restrictive trade policies have a positive impact on economic growth, we investigate America, Australia and China, and, analyse how their economic performance varies between a free trade environment and a relatively protective trade environment. In this paper, we focus on comparative advantage and use various data such as tariff rate, GDP growth rate, unemployment rate, etc. to test the influence of trade policies on economic growth.We find some support that less restrictive trade policy leads to better economic growth; however overall tariff rates do not seem to have a strong effect on economic growth rates

The primary objective of the article is to examine the nexus between inflation, R&D, patents, and economic growth within a group of Central and Eastern European countries (CEECs). The examination is conducted in two parts. First, the impact of total R&D expenditures on economic growth is observed, as well as the influence of growth on private and public R&D investments. Second, the conversion from private and public R&D investment to innovation, measured by the number of patents, is observed. Throughout the analysis, economic growth and inflation are representative of macroeconomic stability. The outcomes of the panel auto-regressive distributed lag estimation indicate that total R&D expenditures are essential and positively significant for economic growth in the observed countries. The results also show that output growth has a remarkably positive impact on generating private R&D expenditures. Such an influence is also found, but at a weaker level, in the case of public R&D expenditures. In this part of the analysis, inflation has demonstrated a harmful influence on R&D expenditures. The results of the second part indicate that public and private R&D expenditures, at a significant level, generate innovation activities, while the impact of inflation has proven to be unimportant.

Purpose This paper aims to examine the impact of interest rate liberalization on economic growth and the relevance of corruption in the five selected sub-Saharan African countries. Design/methodology/approach The study used the modified version of Driscoll and Kraay’s model by Hoechle, which solved the effects of cross-sectional dependence and heteroscedasticity. Findings The findings reveal a positive impact of the index on economic growth, and it was found that foreign direct investment (FDI) and credit to private sector by banks (CPSB) all stimulate economic growth. The interaction terms of corruption with FDI and CPSB indicate negative effects that show how corruption erodes the benefits of liberalization. Finally, the paper recommends the pursuit of appropriate policies with the sole aim of eradicating corruption and providing a conducive environment for business. Originality/value The paper developed a composite domestic financial liberalization index to capture the timing and essential dimensions of the reform process. The study investigates the effect of interest rate liberalization on economic growth and the relevance of corruption. Most of the recent and past studies only examined the impact of interest rate reforms on growth without investigating the relevance of corruption.

The present study empirically investigates the long-run causal relationship between foreign capital and economic development in India by using the annual time-series data from 1990–1991 to 2013–2014. The study uses some selected macroeconomic variables such as per capita government expenditure on education (PcGEE, as an indicator of economic development), gross domestic product (GDP, as an indicator of economic growth), gross capital formation (GCF, as an indicator of domestic investment), official development assistance (ODA, as an indicator of foreign official inflows) and foreign direct investment (FDI, as an indicator of foreign private investment) for its empirical analysis. By using the cointegration test and the vector vector-error correction model (VECM) technique, this study finds that in the long run, domestic investment has shown a significant and positive impact on economic development, whereas, ODA, FDI and GDP have shown a significant negative impact on it. It concludes that domestic investment, foreign capital along with economic growth have a significant impact on economic development in India in long run. It suggests that the national developmental policy of India should focus on the productive utilization of both domestic and foreign capital along with it should give emphasis on effective transformation of growth benefits towards development process.
