Abstract The influence of a medicinal plant extract, immobilised by ligands, on the activity of antioxidant enzymes and photosynthetic pigment concentration of wheat and maize was studied. The object of study was seed of drought-resistant firm durum wheat (Triticum durum Desf.) and maize (Zea mays L.). Seeds were subjected to general uniform γ-radiation from a 60Co source on a Rkhund installation at average dose power of MD = 0.306 Gy/sec. Before radiation seeds were treated in modified extract from medicinal plants. The treatment of seeds with 0.1 and 0.01% solution of modified extract from Hypericum, Dandelion, and Calendula caused significant reduction in processes initiated by radiation and in formation of free radicals. On the basis of the obtained results it was concluded that the used modified plant extract collection had a protective effect, reducing the amount of free radicals produced by γ-irradiation.

CHBr2PBr2 and (CHBr2)2PBr are formed in high yields and in preparatively useful amounts when solutions of white phosphorus in bromoform are exposed to γ-radiation. In the first stages of irradiation, a red phosphorus containing many groups from the solvent is the only reaction product. About 1000 molecules of P4 are consumed per 100 eV of energy absorbed. In the later stages of irradiation, free radicals from the solvent attack this red phosphorus and lead to the formation of bromophosphines in high yield. Chain reactions are formulated for the formation of both the red phosphorus and the bromophosphines.

EPR studies have been performed on some gamma-irradiated marine mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) and scallops (Pecten jacobaeus) from the families of Mytilidae and Pectinidae, respectively. Before γ-irradiation, the EPR lines of Mytilus galloprovincialis indicated the existence of Mn2+ ions, which were not observed in the powders of scallop shells. γ -irradiation induced defects in powders of Mytilus galloprovincialis shells, were attributed to orthorhombic CO−3 , axial CO3−3 , orthorhombic CO−2 , freely rotating CO−2 , freely rotating SO−2 , axial SO−3 , isotropic PO2−4 and organic free radicals. γ -irradiation induced defects in powders of Pecten jacobaeus shells were attributed to orthorhombic CO−3 , axial CO3−3 , orthorhombic CO−2 , freely rotating CO−2 , freely rotating SO−2 , and axial SO−3 free radicals. The EPR parameters of the free radicals were compared with literature data on similar defects

AbstractThe effect of γ-irradiation on the structure and oxidation of cis-1,4-polyisoprene is investigated by ATR-FTIR technique. This method provides the valuable insight into the type of oxidation products produced and the extent and nature of intramolecular cyclization and chain scission reactions. The formation of ketones, alcohols and/or ethers, and hydroperoxides is apparent already at small doses of γ-radiation and it increases with the exposure time significantly. At the highest dose of 309 kGy a decrease in the intensity of C=O stretching mode of ketones (1717 cm−1) was observed while the overall area of the band remained the same as in the case of 188 kGy dose. The shoulders observed at 1740 cm−1 and 1772 cm−1 could be assigned to C=O stretching frequency of esters and five-membered-ring lactones, respectively. Higher doses of γ-radiation also cause the formation of two relatively strong bands in the region of conjugated double bonds. These could origin from the aromatic products or cycloenes with one double bond formed by cyclization and chain scission processes.

Total yields of paramagnetic species, their optical bleaching and thermal annealing in acetic, propionic, a-butyric, isobutyric, and pivalic acid γ-irradiated at 77 K were followed by ESR spectroscopy. Radical anions, always found after irradiation, disappear during optical bleaching without formation of any paramagnetic product. During thermal annealing they are converted almost quantitatively into the α-radicals of the respective acid, with the exception of pivalic acid. Amounts of radical anions were estimated from the difference of integrated ESR spectra taken before and after optical bleaching. The results show that approximately equal amounts of the reduction and oxidation paramagnetic products of the γ-irradiation can be detected.

Abstract The pretreatment of the phosphoric acid is a stage of utmost importance leading to an optimal recovery of the uranium present in this acid. To this end, the degradation of the organic matter which obstructs considerably this recovery was tested by γ irradiation. This study lies within the scope of the radiation/matter interaction; concerning the use of the γ irradiator as proceed of phosphoric acid purification by the degradation of di butyl phthalate (DBP). Studies of the interaction of γ radiation with phosphoric acid solutions polluted by an organic matter concern the study of the influence of some parameters such as: dose rate (0.5–35 kGy), initial concentration (50–500 mg/L) of the pollutant, pH and % in P2O5 on the degradation of organic matter by γ irradiation. The reactions followed pseudo first order kinetics for different initial concentrations. The results made it possible to say that the degradation of di butyl phthalate by γ irradiation is dependent on the amount of the concentration of DBP and pH. The G-values decreased with absorbed doses, and increased with higher initial concentrations.Purification of phosphoric acid by γ radiation does not degrade the quality of this acid.
