AbstractFourier transform infrared (FTIR) is an efficient tool to analyse deposits on iron gall inscriptions that appear on historic documents. Deposits look like white powder or whitish crystals under a microscope. Crystals show cubic or needle shapes with sizes below 20 μm. Mapping infrared spectroscopy in addition allows the selective identification of mixed deposits. Selective analysis of different inorganic oxalates is possible in four regions of the mid-infrared spectrum, thus avoiding interferences with bands of other compounds present. Calcium, potassium and iron oxalates, further calcium sulphate, calcium carbonate, basic iron sulphates and iron ammonium sulphate were identified on samples taken from selected manuscripts. The results enabled to establish a correlation of ink composition and the observed intensity of ink corrosion.

The high-resolution Fourier transform infrared spectrum of nitrogen trifluoride NF3has been studied in the v1+ v4perpendicular band region around 1523 cm−1. All experimental data have been refined applying various reduction forms of the effective rovibrational Hamiltonian developed for an isolated degenerate state of a symmetric top molecule. The v1= v4= 1 excited state of the14NF3oblate molecule was treated with models taking into account ℓ- andk-type intravibrational resonances. Parameters up to sixth order have been accurately determined and the unitary equivalence of the derived parameter sets in different reductions was demonstrated.

Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy becomes increasingly important for detecting adulterations in food due to a minimal sample preparation and a fast nondestructive measurement. Sunflower oil is a popular food ingredient, which might be contaminated or even adulterated by compounds with health concerns such as mineral oil. In this context a feasibility study was performed to compare the suitability of near- and mid-infrared spectroscopy for detecting mineral oil in sunflower oil. For this purpose, sunflower oils spiked with mineral oil in the concentration range of 0.001–1.0% w/w were analyzed by Fourier transform near- and mid-infrared spectroscopy, respectively, and spectra data were preprocessed prior to partial least squares regression. Hereby, the data preparation was optimized for each technique to account for model performance influences. The model performance was fairly similar for both approaches with a slightly better precision and thus limit of detection (near infrared 0.12% w/w, mid infrared 0.16% w/w) for the near-infrared-based model compared to the mid-infrared model. Consequently, both techniques are considered suitable for the determination of mineral oil in sunflower oil in the context of food authentication.

The reaction of a deuterium plasma and polytetrafluoroethylene has been investigated. Vibrationally excited DF* (up to v′ = 3) has been observed in emission via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The vibrational and rotational temperatures suggest that a mechanism similar to that found previously for the reaction between H atoms and the fluoroethylenes is responsible for the production of the DF.
