A simple X-ray spectrometric method for the simultaneous quantitative determination of the trace elements Rb, Sr, Y, Zr and Nb in Chinese porcelains is described. The results of the analysis show that Jingdezhen porcelains from later Ming to the Republic period have concentrations of these elements lying within narrow ranges whereas modern (after World War II) porcelains, whether Jingdezhen or otherwise, have concentrations of one or more of these elements lying outside these ranges. This offers a simple nondestructive method of detecting modern fakes.

Mineral trace element concentration of human saliva from healthy volunteers, were investigated by Proton-Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE) analysis. The specimens were bombarded with Proton beams of 2 MeV from a Van de Graaff accelerator at NRC . The object of this measurement was to find a normal range of trace element concentration for Iranian people.

Background/Aim. The task of a forensic examiner during exhumation of skeletal remains is to calculate antemortem height of a person whose skeletal remains were found. Anthropological investigations which provided formulae for calculating ante-mortem body height date back from XIX or from the first half of XX centuries. The most commonly used formulae are those of Trotter- Gleser, which were used to investigate skeletal remains from the World War II. Those investigations were conducted on skeletal remains of various ages and degrees of decay. Our experience with exhumation have shown that the present formulae do not deliver reliable values of antemortem height. The aim of this study was to investigate if there is a correlation of the length of long bones of leg and forearm with body height within our population and to establish the formulae for calculating ante-mortem body height within our population based on the obtained values. Methods. The lengths of ulna, radius, fibula and tibia were determined precisely by measuring bones on living individuals using a digital X-ray system. The height of individuals whose bones were measured was determined using an anthropometer. Results. The highest degree of correlation between bone length and body height was found for tibia in males (r = 0.859, p < 0.005) and ulna in females (r = 0.679, p < 0.05). We calculated the regression formulae for determination of ante-mortem body height that differ from the current body height formulae. Conclusion. In our population the length of long bones of the forearm and the leg are characterized by various degree of correlation with body height. The formulae that we set, make less distinction between the measured and the calculated body height as compared with the Trotter-Gleser formulae. We do hope that their implementation will facilitate identification of sceletal remains in our population.

Abstract. Prehistory of Sumatra well characterized by its abundant numbers of obsidian industry, one of which is in Jambi Province. However, determination on the geochemical characteristic of obsidian from Jambi is still lacking. Portable X-Ray Fluorescence analysis (pXRF) on obsidian samples from Merangin and Sarolangun proved the existence of three different obsidian sources in Jambi. It is obtained through the determination of pXRF on the particular trace elements: Rb, Sr, Zr, Y, Nb, Ti and Mn. The results are then analyzed by the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to arrange the same obsidian sources. This result is then corroborated with the Independent Sample T-Test. This analysis reveals the similarity in trace-element concentration amongst the same source, as well as their differences within different sources. This study contributes to the identification of two new obsidian sources from Sarolangun that have never been reported before. As a result, there are five known-sources of obsidian in Southern Sumatra, in which three other sources were previously identified by Ambrose et al. (2009) and Reepmeyer et al. (2011).Abstrak. Prasejarah Sumatra terkenal dengan industri obsidiannya yang melimpah, salah satunya yaitu di wilayah Jambi. Namun demikian, determinasi karakteristik geokimia obsidian dari wilayah Jambi hingga saat ini masih sangat terbatas jumlahnya. Analisis Portable X-Ray Fluorescence (pXRF) pada sampel obsidian dari Merangin dan Sarolangun membuktikan adanya tiga sumber obsidian yang berbeda di wilayah Jambi. Perbedaan tersebut diperoleh melalui determinasi pXRF pada unsur-jejak Rb, Sr, Zr, Y, Nb, Ti dan Mn. Hasil determinasi kemudian dianalisis dengan metode Principal Component Analysis (PCA)  untuk mengelompokkan sumber-sumber obsidian yang sama. Hasil analisis tersebut kemudian diperkuat oleh analisis Independent Sample T-Test yang menunjukkan kemiripan proporsi unsur-jejak pada sumber yang sama, sekaligus perbedaannya pada sumber yang berlainan. Studi memberikan kontribusi berupa identifikasi dua sumber obsidian baru dari Sarolangun (Batang Asai 1 dan 2) yang belum pernah dilaporkan sebelumnya. Dengan demikian terdapat lima sumber obsidian di Sumatra Bagian Selatan, dimana tiga sumber lainnya (i.e. Kerinci, OKU dan Tapus) telah berhasil diidentifikasi oleh Ambrose dkk. (2009) dan Reepmeyer dkk. (2011).

ABSTRACTRutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS) is used to characterize the stoichiometry of graphite intercalation compounds (GIC). Specific application is made to several stages of different donor and acceptor compounds and to commensurate and incommensurate intercalants. A deviation from the theoretical stoichiometry is measured for most of the compounds using this non-destructive method. Within experimental error, the RBS results agree with those obtained from analysis of the (00ℓ) x-ray diffractograms and weight uptake measurements on the same samples.

ABSTRACTThis article examines China’s efforts to restore cable telegraph rights from the establishment of the Republic of China to the end of World War II. Challenging the conventional dichotomy of “Chinese” and “Western” actors in rights recovery issues, this article explores the intricate power relations between foreign cable companies, international interests groups and various political factions in China. It analyses China’s reclaim of cable sovereignty in three phases, each characterised by a particular controversy—the intra-clique struggle of the Communications Clique during the early Republic and the warlord era; the rivalry between the Nationalist Party, military and the state during the Nanjing decade; and the direct Sino-Japanese conflict during wartime. The article presents the argument that for the various interest groups, ideologies such as imperialism and nationalism served as rhetoric in their respective pursuits. It was the daily political tensions that played a crucial role in shaping how cable policies were devised.

The Roma population has been living in Croatian territories for more than six centuries and during that period was mostly persecuted by state and local authorities who sought to assimilate them. Such antigypsyism political practice was not unique only for the Croatian territory but was practiced in most other European countries. After World War II there was no commemoration and recognition of Roma victims in most European countries, including socialist Croatia (Yugoslavia). Such marginalization of the culture of remembrance of Roma war victims was reflected in the lack of education on this subject in the Croatian education system, where it is mostly mentioned in only a few words. The paper focuses on the analysis of how the issue of Roma suffering in the Independent State of Croatia (NDH) and Europe is (un)integrated into the Croatian education system.
