Introdução: Os ceratocistos odontogênicos (CCA) são considerados raros cistos de desenvolvimento, derivados dos remanescentes da lâmina dentária, com atividade intraóssea benigna, porém localmente invasivo e agressivo. O tratamento para o ceratocisto odongênico é variado, podendo-se encontrar modalidades tais como:enucleação, isolada ou associada a curetagem, com osteotomia periférica, aplicação da solução de Carnoy ou crioterapia, descompressão, marsupialização e ressecções. Objetivo: O presente trabalho tem como objetivo relatar um caso de ceratocisto odontogênico, onde foi escolhida abordagem conservadora por curetagem e osteotomia periférica. Relato de caso: Paciente de 68 anos, leucoderma, referiu ao exame clínico dor espontânea em região retromolar esquerda e parestesia em lábio inferior. A paciente foi submetida a biopsia por aspiração e excisional, após confirmação histopatológica foi proposto uma enucleação associada a osteotomia periférica sob anestesia geral. A paciente permanece em acompanhamento clínico e radiográfico, sem sinais de recidiva da lesão. Conclusão: Embora apresentem um comportamento agressivo, os ceratocistos odontogêncios podem ser tratados com segurança, de forma conservadora, por meio de enucleação seguida de osteotomia periférica com mínimo de morbidade. ABSTRACT Objective: The aim of the present study was to locate mast cells in chronic periapical lesions (granulomas and cysts) by using histochemical techniques and toluidine blue staining. Methods: A quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional and retrospective research was performed. The sample was obtained from histopathological reports in the archives of the laboratory of surgical pathology of the University of Pernambuco between November 2014 and May 2015. Results: Sixteen cases of granuloma and 21 cases of periapical cysts were selected. The stained slides were analyzed by two examiners at different times, in a double-blind study. Mast cells were found in 13 (61.9%) of the periapical cyst cases, located in the capsule of the lesion. In the periapical granuloma cases, mast cells were found in eight cases (50%), located in the granulation tissue. Conclusion: Mast cells were detected in both cysts and periapical granuloma, located in the capsule and granulation tissue, respectively. Mast cells were more prevalent in periapical cysts than in periapical granuloma.

Background. Recently, mast cells were recognized in the pathogenesis of more aggressive pathologic lesions. This study was aimed to evaluate and compare the density of mast cells in Dentigerous cyst (DC) and Keratocystic odontogenic tumor (KCOT) regarding their different clinical behavior. Method. This study was conducted on 23 and 26 cases of DC and KCOT, respectively. Four-micron sections were prepared for Toluidine blue staining and mast cell densities in two desired cysts were studied. Final data was analyzed via t-test and Mann-Whitney U test method regarding the significant level lower than 0.05. Results. Mast cell densities were significantly higher in KCOTs for deep and superficial layers and both layers (P<0.05). The density of degranulated mast cells in the deeper layers and both layers was significantly higher in KCOTs (P<0.05). However, the density of degranulated mast cells in the superficial layer had no significant difference (P>0.05). Conclusion. It seems that mast cells may be involved in the pathogenesis of KCOT, but, regarding wide range of mast cell’s biologic activities, further investigations are recommended to confirm the issue and prepare the details.

Abstract Mast cells proteases, tryptase and chymase are directly involved in the growth and progression of solid tumors due to their important role in tumor angiogenesis. We examined the density of tryptase positive mast cells and the mean density of new blood vessels in gastric malignant tumors of patients with and without Helicobacter pylori infection, using immunohistochemical staining for tryptase (for mast cells) and CD 105 (for new vessels). Tryptase and CD 105 expression was detected in gastrectomy specimens. In this study, mast cell density correlates with angiogenesis and the growth and progression of gastric cancer. It also shows that the participation of Helicobacter pylori infection in the growth and progress of gastric neoplasia is due to an increase of peritumoral angiogenesis, with subsequent local and distant tumor spread and perivascular growth, but without perineural and nodal involvement.

During pregnancy, it is essential that sufficient nutrients are supplied by the vascular system to support the dramatic modifications of the rat uterine cervix. Angiogenesis refers to the growth of new blood vessels from pre-existing microcirculation and mast cells have been associated with this process. This study examined the modifications of the vascular compartment and the distribution of mast cells on cervical tissue during pregnancy. Using disodium cromoglycate as a mast cell stabilizer, we determined the effects of the mast cell degranulation on cervical angiogenesis. Mast cell distribution and their degranulation status were evaluated by immunohistochemistry. Endothelial cell proliferation was measured by bromodeoxyuridine incorporation. Vascular areas (absolute and relative) and maturation indices were assessed by quantitative immunohistochemistry of von Willebrand factor and α-smooth muscle actin respectively. Mast cells were predominantly observed during the first half of pregnancy in the perivascular zones. The values of bromodeoxyuridine incorporation, absolute vascular area and vascular maturation index exhibited a significant increase throughout pregnancy. All animals that received mast cell stabilizer showed more than 40% of non-degranulated mast cells. Treated rats exhibited a decrease in endothelial proliferation and in relative vascular area; in addition, a large proportion of mature blood vessels was observed, suggesting a diminished level of new vessel formation. The effects of the mast cell stabilizer were sustained beyond the end of treatment. This is the first report that brings evidence that mast cell degranulation could be a necessary process to contribute to the normal angiogenesis of the rat cervix during pregnancy. Further investigations are needed to elucidate the possible implications of abnormal vascular development of the uterine cervix on the physiological process of ripening and parturition.
