This article analyses German surnames from the point of view of their motivation and classification into respective semantic-motivational types. The analysis is based on a corpus of data compiled at the beginning of the 21st century from the archive records containing surnames of inhabitants of the towns of Prachatice, Volary, Vimperk and Kašperské Hory. All of these towns are situated close to the German border and, until the mid-1940s, had predominantly been inhabited by German population. The final section of the article identifies the most frequent semantic-motivational types of German surnames currently used by Czechs in the area explored. The article also explains the etymology and motivation of these surnames in relation to the history of the region and to ethnic groups inhabiting the area since the Middle Ages.

In this review, the author analyses the Tarnovo Edition of the Stishnoy Prologue. Texts: Lexical Index (published by Bulgarian researchers Georgi Petkov and Maria Spasova) and focuses on the structure of the publication, providing a detailed description of the parts of each volume: prologue texts, prologue poems, the lexical index, and the index of saints’ names. The review evaluates the work from the point of view of its academic contribution. The reviewer largely agrees with the authors’ point of view on the history and the study of the Stishnoy Prologue set forth in the preface to the publication. While objecting to some points, the reviewer evaluates the work highly, considering it an important stage in the process of studying the history of the Stishnoy Prologue, one of the most widespread hagiographic calendar collections of the Middle Ages. The publication of the texts of the Stishnoy Prologue, even those in just the Tarnovo edition, can be a powerful catalyst for further textual criticism and linguistic studies of the numerous Russian, Serbian, and Bulgarian copies that have survived to the present day. Ultimately, the reviewed publication can become the basis for a full-scale critical edition of the Stishnoy Prologue. The review emphasises the timeless significance of this publication for Slavic studies, its innovative character, its structural integrity, its theoretical sophistication, and the enormous practical importance of the work for Bulgarian philologists.

Background:The deepening of knowledge about the religious and cultural links between the southern and eastern Slavs during the Middle Ages requires deep scientific reflection, comprehensive understanding of all the best practices, especially from the point of view of modern methodological approaches. It has been done a lot at the level of narrow specializations, codicology, philology, paleography, art criticism, but in general, the significant changes have not happened in summarizing the results of these various studies, which makes it impossible to create a clearer picture of the process as a whole, in motion and variety of manifestations. An important step in this direction should be the development of general periodization, which would take into considerationthe key phenomena not only of literary and literary life, but also of all other spheres of these relations. Purpose: Taking into account the vastness of the research topic, it is worth noting that the author does not aim to deeply and comprehensively analyze all the works that in one way or another determine the chronology of the main stages of medieval religious and cultural relations between the Orthodox Slavs. Many of these publications, moreover, express their views on the temporal markers of the process in question, which largely coincide with already established periodization (sometimes partially modified by binding to the turning points of the history of the Balkan countries, or Rus, or taking into consideration specific features of the interaction process itself). Therefore, the object of our consideration was only those works that were most important for the development, supplementation, concretization or change of the periodization of the Southeastern Slavic relations in the Middle Ages as a whole or in some of its stages; as well as those that contain important considerations and remarks regarding the dating of the underlying phenomena of the process. Results: The problem of the periodization of South-East Slavic religious-cultural interaction during the Middle Ages remains actual and needs special and priority attention. The criteria and, in general, the schemes of chronological systematization of the material, developed by previous generations of scientists, are largely outdated and contain conflicting and incompatible points. Their productive revision is possible only if a comprehensive comparison and generalization of the results of the study of all major points of contact between the religious and cultural life of Rus and the South Slavic countries. In addition, in this context, time periods are particularly noticeable, such as the second half of the IX–X c., the second half of the XI – the end of the XII c.,the second half of the XIII–the first half of the XIV c., the second half of the XV – the beginning of the XVI c. of which we have too little information, so they seem to be partly lost, fall out of general narratives. Accordingly, a more thorough study of them is potentially able to adjust and refine the stages of this complex and time-consuming process. And, importantly, when it comes to Rus, especially during the late Middle Ages, it is also very important to take into account the local features of its development, in accordance with the borders of the states (Moscow State, Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Polish Kingdom) that existed in its territory as well as the jurisdictional boundaries of the divided Kyiv Metropolitanate. The article presents a mythopoetic analysis of Pavel Saltzman’s novel “Central Asia in the Middle Ages (or the Middle Ages in Central Asia)” (1930–1950), published for the first time in 2018. The content of the article is aimed at practical educational discourse related to a number of literary problems: the study of the work of a previously unknown, but very significant for the history of literature writer; the study of Russian literature as the text devoted to the different ethnic culture (the existential myth by Saltzman is considered as binary opposition personified in the images of the bird Simurg and the giant Zakhak which is actualized in the literature of the XXI century — in the novels by G. Yakhina “Zuleikha Opens Her Eyes” and V. Medvedev “Zahhok”, unexpectedly rendering new overtones to modern literature); the orientalist and postorientalist studies (comparing prose Saltzman with the work of his contemporaries — A. Platonov, L. Solovyov, S. Krzhyzhanovsky. The author comes to the conclusion that Salzman’s text, despite the theme and title of the novel, is an example of neorientalist prose: all the patterns of traditional orientalism are given by Salzman differently, not from the standard point of view of a Western person.

The consulate is an old and a dignified office. Through various vicissitudes the consul has come down to us from the days when, with the dawn of new courage and enterprise, the closing of the Middle Ages saw the revival of international trade and travel in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Hence the future of that office must be of considerable interest from an historical point of view, to say nothing of the interest which all of us who expect to do any foreign traveling ought to feel in the fate of the traveler's best friend. All of this is doubly true in view of the fact that serious changes in the consulate are in point of fact impending, or even taking place before we have had time to notice them.Almost everyone who has even a slight acquaintance with the history of international relations is aware of the way in which the consular office has already lost much of its old standing through the abolition of privileges of extraterritoriality in modern states. Originally, the consul was a judge in many cases between citizens of the state which he represented who were permanently, or even only temporarily, residing abroad. Today in all Western states he has come to exercise judicial powers only with respect to seamen on vessels flying the flag of his appointing state. The result has been a great diminution of his powers and prestige, a change so pronounced and of such long standing that few nowadays appreciate the great dignity and influence of the consular office in its earlier history.

The article analyzes the nature of the romantic culture of love. Romantic love is seen as a love culture, which includes a set of beliefs, ideals, principles that have developed in the Middle Ages, and the idea of which passes from generation to generation, from one century to another. It is emphasized that the romantic culture of love is not only a discourse of passion and ethos of eros. This cultural-historical type of love absorbs the connotations agape, filia and storge. Consequently, the discourse of those who love in the romantic invariant is not focused solely on passion, it is also caring, understanding, responsibility, attention, sacrifice, etc. – aspects inherent in love-filia, love-storge and love-agape. It is proved that a discourse of romantic culture of love is not realized through the prism of "rose-colored glasses", but in the context of understanding that the emergence of this feeling inevitably generates a sense of vulnerability in both participants of the love discourse. The presence of sorrow in one of the participants of the discourse of love is one of the most characteristic and vivid signs of the romantic culture of love. From the philosophical point of view, various aspects of love affliction are considered as markers of truth and authenticity of feelings, relationships between lovers. Tears, in romantic love - is not the weakness of an object and/or subject of love discourse, but it is their strength, depth and basis for the continuation of their history of feelings. It turns out that in contrast to the modern post-romantic culture of love, in the romantic tradition, the basis of love relations is the maximum recognition of the person. The one who we love is given to us as a fact of life, as the world itself. Love for which the only truly significant and determining any choice is the value of a particular, separate personality. The person we love, in essence, cannot be the subject of evaluation. One may be neither reasonable, nor good, but he/she is capable of transforming a valuable world, revealing its unity, its ability to harmony and doomed to disharmony. The love of human to human (the subject of Love) is the path where all the faces and all the boundaries, that distinguish people from one or another affiliation, disappear.

There are different opinions about when and under which circumstances the baptism of Rus took place. Opinions were differing already in the sixteenth century, when a version extracted from the Chronicle by Joannes Zonaras has been added to the assumptions that existed on this point. According to Zonaras’ version, during the reign of Emperor Vasily the Macedonian a bishop has been sent to Rus in order to convert the pagans. The pagans started to express doubts about the Christian faith, and the bishop, at their request, had to throw the Gospel into the fire. The book miraculously remained unharmed, and the barbarians adopted the Christianity. This story penetrated into the Moscow literary corpus through two channels — with a selection from the Chronicle’s Serbian translation, this selection being called “Paralipomenon”, and with the translation of excerpts from the Chronicle that were made by Maxim the Greek. The learned abba suggested to start the history of Russian Christianity from the Gospel’s Miracle, and not with the capture of Korsun, the event about which Greek sources say nothing. The shocking proposal of Maxim the Greek was not accepted. Still, the Miracle with the Gospel entered into the series of incidents, that were considered to constitute the long history of Rus baptism. The episode was regularly reproduced first in Muscovy historical compilations, and then in West Russian anti-Catholic polemical writings. The multi-steps (up to six stages) Christianization, stretched for two centuries and overwhelmed with different legends troubles the mind of historians who operate with the categories of modernism. From their point of view stretching of the kind is identical to a devaluation of the baptism sacrament. On the contrary, in the Middle Ages this situation was perceived as a sign of the inexhaustible mercy from the side of the Providence toward beloved nation.

An overview of current medieval philosophical and scientific studies would seem justified at the beginning of the 21st century. While no part of the history of philosophy has been so much despised as the Middle Ages (this period having been called until the beginning of the 20th century the ›dark ages‹), numerous internationally signi;cant studies on this topic have recently been published. Essays and monographs, critical editions, anthologies and re­views have addressed many facets of medieval thought, particularly the medieval institu­tional context and the intellectual life of the Middle Ages along with the history of medie­val philosophy and science. This essay looks at studies of different philosophical tendencies from the end of the 13th century to the 15th century, not restricting itself to medieval Aristo­telianism.
