There are several International Olympiads for secondary school students (for example, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and informatics). These Olympiads are not just a science competition, but a means to care for talent in the particular science. The goal of this paper is to identify the necessary topics important for good results at these international contests, and to compare the contest systems for the countries in South Eastern Europe, in the field of Informatics (Computer Science), as a region that is one of the prominent world regions in the context of high results in the international competitions. Here, we provide comparison through detailed analysis of several countries, and further we present a new approach that may be used to compare the achievements of the countries based on the results that students achieved at these competitions. Finally, we present an application of this approach on the results of some of the discussed countries compared to Macedonia. We strongly believe that the paper will provide a valuable content and approach for the entities involved in the organization of the contests, to measure their results compared to other countries, to use the information for improvement, and to use their achievements to raise awareness among the government institutions and companies in order to get support from them.

This study investigated the influence of fishing related activities on academic performance of secondary school students in Rachuonyo North Sub-County. The specific objectives were to examine the activities associated with fishing and determine how they influenced academic performance of secondary students in the Sub-County. The study targeted students and principals of the 49 secondary schools in Rachuonyo North Sub-county. The research used simple random sampling to select 14 public secondary schools and 20 Form Three students from each of the sampled schools. The total sample size was 292 respondents. Primary data was collected and analysed using quantitative and qualitative methods and then presented in tables in percentages. Data analysis was done using SPSS and the Microsoft Excel software. The study established that students participated in fishing activities while attending school. Major fishing activities that students engaged in included: actual fishing an agreement  index of 82.9% of students; repairing of fishing nets which was supported by 74.2% of students; setting of nets in the lake which was supported by 84.4% of students; and removal of fish from the nets which was agreed to by 83.9% of students. Some (91.7%) of the students believed that their counterparts who engaged in fishing activities tended to perform poorly in their classwork.  The study has recommended that parents, School Boards of Management and the communities along the beaches collaborate with each other in order to keep students from engaging in fishing activities for this likely to improve school attendance and academic performance of students. The Government should enforce compulsory basic education as well as provide it free to all children at this level of education.

Cybersecurity education topics require technical understanding. However, it is a challenging task for any teacher to introduce topics to students who have no technical background. Recently, the concept of gamification has been implemented as a tool to inculcate student’s interest using a variety of popular in-games techniques and applying them to educational modules. Extending from this notion, it was found that Capture the Flag (CTF) competition style is a successful way of introducing students to various technical concepts in the standard computer science curriculum. During the 2019 school holiday, a CTF for secondary school students was run at Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) with the primary goal of introducing secondary school students to various cybersecurity topics and also to inculcate their interest in cybersecurity. The method that we used is different from other CTF or similar events, in which we use a scenario-based approach. We found that this method attracts participants in solving each challenge in a competitive environment.

The study investigated the relationship between personality traits and academic underachievement among secondary school students in Yenagoa and Ekeremor local government areas in Bayelsa State. Correlational Survey research design was used for the study with a focus on three personality traits namely; openness to experience, conscientiousness and extraversion. The population of the study consisted of 3,610 SSII students in the two local government areas. Three instruments were used to gather the needed data; they are Bakare’s Progressive Matrices (BPM) which was used to identify students with high mental ability, Teachers Made Achievement Test (TMAT) and Students’ Personality Descriptive Scale (SPTDS). Purposive sampling techniques were used to draw a sample of 200 students identified as underachievers while simple random sampling technique was used to select the schools for the study. Pearson products moment correlation was used to answer the research questions and probability level with chosen alpha level of 0.05 used to test the hypotheses. The study found out that there was a significant negative relationship between openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion and academic underachievement among the senior secondary school students in Ekeremor and Yenagoa local government area. Based on the findings it was recommended among others that the government should establish effective guardian and counselling units in all the secondary schools in the local government areas to guide both high and low achieving students.

The wave of Industry Revolution (IR 4.0) highlights the importance of technology in our life. The demand for technologist and skilled workers in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) are increasing day by day due to their expertise. TVET provides a platform for formal and non-formal learning to equip the youngsters in contributing to the development of a prosperous and inclusive nation. Moreover, TVET promises bright job prospects especially in fulfilling the manpower demand of IR 4.0.  However, students in Malaysia currently are not fully aware of the existence of TVET, since the number of students who join TVET are still below expectation. Therefore, the main objective in this study is to develop the best TVET model to classify the students’ tendency in choosing TVET after completing secondary school. From the literature, five main factors that hinder students’ interest in joining TVET are recognized, namely students’ interest, parents, society, TVET instructors and employers. In this study, 428 secondary school students from Kedah (Malaysia) are involved as respondents. Different types of decision tree models are developed based on the algorithms and the splitting criteria. Altogether, there are 15 variables derived from 5 main affecting factors mentioned above to determine the tendency of joining TVET. Consequently, the best TVET classifier with the misclassification rate of 0.2919 is selected, to predict the tendency of students who will be joining TVET in future. Our findings revealed that the variable of “Stream” plays as the primary and trifling roles. This classifier is beneficial in assisting the government to achieve the aim of upholding TVET in Malaysia.

Background: This article addresses the following question: why don’t primary and secondary school students perform urban walks or hikes during cultural and tourist visits of the cities they live in, when engaging in physical activity (PA)? The aim is to demonstrate that exploring cities on foot is a different, important, and necessary way to perform PA, that leads to improving social relations and exposing individuals to culture; in particular, teachers would be trained for this. Methods: qualitative methodology based on exploratory observation; state-of-the-art literature review; design of a didactic proposal in the form of an Urban Walk. Results: existence of publications on related activities in many countries including Spain; development and implementation of the Urban Walk; opinions of its future teachers and their knowledge of the possibilities and advantages of this proposal and its relationship with different knowledge subjects. Conclusions: the Urban Walk facilitates future teacher knowledge of cities and provides a new approach to PA; physical-cultural activities that complement the proposal need to be designed.
