There are several International Olympiads for secondary school students (for example, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and informatics). These Olympiads are not just a science competition, but a means to care for talent in the particular science. The goal of this paper is to identify the necessary topics important for good results at these international contests, and to compare the contest systems for the countries in South Eastern Europe, in the field of Informatics (Computer Science), as a region that is one of the prominent world regions in the context of high results in the international competitions. Here, we provide comparison through detailed analysis of several countries, and further we present a new approach that may be used to compare the achievements of the countries based on the results that students achieved at these competitions. Finally, we present an application of this approach on the results of some of the discussed countries compared to Macedonia. We strongly believe that the paper will provide a valuable content and approach for the entities involved in the organization of the contests, to measure their results compared to other countries, to use the information for improvement, and to use their achievements to raise awareness among the government institutions and companies in order to get support from them.

Purposive sampling techniques were used to draw a sample of 200 students identified as underachievers while simple random sampling technique was used to select the schools for the study. Pearson products moment correlation was used to answer the research questions and probability level with chosen alpha level of 0.05 used to test the hypotheses. The study found out that there was a significant negative relationship between openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion and academic underachievement among the senior secondary school students in Ekeremor and Yenagoa local government area. The wave of Industry Revolution (IR 4.0) highlights the importance of technology in our life. The demand for technologist and skilled workers in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) are increasing day by day due to their expertise. TVET provides a platform for formal and non-formal learning to equip the youngsters in contributing to the development of a prosperous and inclusive nation. Moreover, TVET promises bright job prospects especially in fulfilling the manpower demand of IR 4.0.  However, students in Malaysia currently are not fully aware of the existence of TVET, since the number of students who join TVET are still below expectation. Therefore, the main objective in this study is to develop the best TVET model to classify the students’ tendency in choosing TVET after completing secondary school. From the literature, five main factors that hinder students’ interest in joining TVET are recognized, namely students’ interest, parents, society, TVET instructors and employers. In this study, 428 secondary school students from Kedah (Malaysia) are involved as respondents. Different types of decision tree models are developed based on the algorithms and the splitting criteria. Altogether, there are 15 variables derived from 5 main affecting factors mentioned above to determine the tendency of joining TVET. Consequently, the best TVET classifier with the misclassification rate of 0.2919 is selected, to predict the tendency of students who will be joining TVET in future. Our findings revealed that the variable of “Stream” plays as the primary and trifling roles. This classifier is beneficial in assisting the government to achieve the aim of upholding TVET in Malaysia.

This study was done to determine the prevalence of smoking and factors influencing cigarette smoking among secondary school students in Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia. This is a cross-sectional school survey conducted on 4500 adolescent students based on a structured questionnaire. Data was collected using the supervised self administered questionnaire the Youth Risk Behaviour Surveillance in the Malaysian National Language Bahasa Malaysia. The prevalence of smoking among the students was 14.0%. About a third of the students (37.8%) started smoking at 13 to 14 years of age. The prevalence of smoking among the male students was higher (26.6%) compared to the female students (3.1 %). Adolescent smoking was associated with (1) sociodemographic factors (age, ethnicity, rural/urban status); (2) environmental factors (parental smoking, staying with parents); (3) behavioural factors (playing truant and risk-taking behaviours such as physical fighting, drug use, alcohol use, sexual activity, lack of seatbelt use, riding with a drunk driver); (4) lifestyle behaviours (being on diet and lack of exercise); (5) personal factors (feeling sad and suicidal behaviours). In conclusion, smoking is a major problem among Malaysian adolescents. Certain groups of adolescents tend to be at higher risk of smoking. This problem should be curbed early by targeting these groups of high risk adolescents. Asia Pac J Public Health 2005; 17(2): 130-136.

Summary The German Pupils Academy (Deutsche Schüler-Akademie) is a summer-school program for highly gifted secondary-school students. Three types of program evaluation were conducted. Input evaluation confirmed the participants as intellectually highly gifted students who are intrinsically motivated and interested to attend the courses offered at the summer school. Process evaluation focused on the courses attended by the participants as the most important component of the program. Accordingly, the instructional approaches meet the needs of highly gifted students for self-regulated and discovery oriented learning. The product or impact evaluation was based on a multivariate social-cognitive framework. The findings indicate that the program contributes to promoting motivational and cognitive prerequisites for transforming giftedness into excellent performances. To some extent, the positive effects on students' self-efficacy and self-regulatory strategies are due to qualities of the learning environments established by the courses.
