Following a successful Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccination pilot in 2013–2015 in Kitui county, Kenya introduced the HPV vaccine in October 2019 with a goal to immunize approximately 800,000 girls annually against HPV. Our study assessed the knowledge, attitudes, and practice of affected groups towards HPV infection and vaccination in two counties of Kenya. Semi-structured interviews from children aged between nine and thirteen years and key informants comprising of parents, head teachers, community leaders and health workers involved in HPV vaccination in health facilities from Mombasa and Tana-River counties were conducted. Content was analyzed thematically and coded for emerging themes using the QRS Nvivo 12 Plus software package. From our findings, a significant proportion of participants, especially children, have limited knowledge of the subject. Vaccination of boys was opposed by most participants. Parents and the community members are not in favor of HPV vaccination, as compared to the other groups. A similar pattern of inadequate knowledge and strongly opposed attitudes was observed in Tana-River and Mombasa. Active community involvement in primary prevention strategies may promote the uptake of the vaccine which can be achieved by robust awareness, modifying the negative beliefs about HPV vaccine and encouraging the perceptibility of HPV vaccination.

Abstract Background Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) genotypes concordance among sexual couples has been evaluated in many investigations with considerable variations in the concordance. However, no such study has carried out between Iranian couples yet. Methods Urogenital specimen from both males and females of couples were taken and transferred to Nilou laboratory for molecular analysis. HPV DNA extraction and typing were carried out using cobas 4800 platform. Demographic and virological data were analyzed afterwards. Results One hundred fourteen couples were enrolled in the study. The mean age of participants were 36 ± 8 and 32 ± 7 for males and females, respectively. 64 (28%) of specimens were positive for at least one HPV genotype. The positive rates within genders were 30.7 and 25.4% for females and males, respectively with a considerable association (P value 0.021). Within the positive samples, 13(5.7%), 8 (7%) and 31(13.5%) were belonged to 16, 18 and other HR genotypes. 59 (51.8%) couples who were negative for HPV showed negative concordance. Of the total positive HPV patients (55 couples, 48.2%), 9 (16.3%) couples had positive concordance and the rest of 46 (83.7%) couples (either of spouse being negative and the other being positive for HPV) showed neither kinds of concordance. Conclusion Recognition of the dynamics of HPV infection not only in women, but in their sexual partners could impact the implementation of preventive measures like HPV vaccination for cervical cancer and other HPV-related diseases for both sexual partners.

Background: Cervical cancer is the second leading cause of death in india. it is also one of the few malignancies where an infectious etiological agent human papilloma virus (HPV) has been identified. With the advent of HPV vaccination, it is possible to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with carcinoma cervix. But biggest hurdle to achieve this is the lack of awareness about the availability and use of HPV vaccine. This study was conducted to know knowledge and awareness of HPV infection and vaccination among medical and paramedical students. We also evaluated the acceptability and coverage of HPV vaccine among these students.Methods: This study was conducted among a total of 520 female students of the Sri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara University with the help of a questionnaire. The study group included 207 MBBS students, 167 BDS students, 89 nursing students and 57 physiotherapy students.Results: Most of the students were in 18-20 years’ age group. Nearly 40.57% of the students knew that HPV is sexually transmitted and 29.80% were aware that this infection can be prevented. Availability of HPV vaccine was known to 75% of the students and the main source of their information was through their college teachings. Nearly 43.75% of the students knew HPV vaccine protects against cervical cancer and 26.73% of the students were vaccinated. Overall knowledge and awareness were better among medical students.Conclusions: A lot of work needs to be done so as to make the target population accept HPV vaccine. There is a great difference between awareness of availability of the vaccine and its use. This emphasizes the need for health care professionals to take special interest in promoting this vaccine in the general population.

Background: Cervical cancer is fifth most common cancer worldwide and second most common cancer in women in India, with an incidence of 1,22,844 cases and accounts for over 67,477 deaths annually (GLOBOCON 2012). Although vaccines are available to prevent the cervical cancer there is lack of awareness regarding the same. Hence the present study has been proposed. The objective was to study the awareness of human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccination among the medical students.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted between September 2017 to December 2017 among the medical students. All those who gave consent were included and a predesigned, pretested proforma consisting of variables about demographic characteristics, HPV, vaccination and the other necessary information required for the study was collected.Results: 72.4% of the participants were aware of the HPV infection, 70.5% about the HPV vaccination and 69.5% of the participants thought that only females should be vaccinated. 52.3% of the participants expressed interest for vaccination. Interns had 100% awareness about the infection and vaccination. Students who were not interested in vaccination, 18.9% of them said they are not sexually active, 8.5% thought there was no need of vaccine, 6.1% felt vaccine is too expensive and 1.3% worried about the safety of the vaccine. Sources of information was mainly through lectures/textbooks (64.8%) followed by doctors/healthcare facility (20.9%).Conclusions: Study revealed appreciable level of awareness among the participants. With this study, the participants are encouraged to get vaccinated as the age group of participants is appropriate for the vaccination.

In recent years, vaccination coverage rates against Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) in Europe have shown a decreasing trend and remain below the required standard. The present study aims to assess knowledge and attitudes regarding HPV infection and vaccination among a representative sample of preadolescents of Palermo, Italy. A survey was carried out throughout two questionnaires, before and after carrying out an educational intervention scheduled during school hours. A total of 1702 students attending first-grade secondary schools of the province of Palermo were enrolled (response rate 68.9%). Students attending third classes (adj OR = 1.18; CI 95% 1.03–1.36), being of higher socioeconomic status (adj OR = 1.35; CI 95% 1.05–1.73), who had previously received information about sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) at home (adj OR = 1.62; CI 95% 1.27–2.07) or at school (adj OR = 2.15; CI 95% 1.70–2.71) and who had ever heard in the past about HPV (adj OR = 1.80; CI 95% 1.42–2.29) showed a significantly higher baseline level of knowledge regarding HPV. Willingness to receive HPV vaccination, in a 10-point Likert scale, significantly increased between the pre- (8.51; SD ± 1.79) and post- (9.01 SD ± 1.52) intervention questionnaires (p < 0.001). A total of 188 out of 272 (69.1%) preadolescents attending five out eighteen schools involved in the project, who had not previously received the HPV vaccine, were vaccinated. During past years, education campaigns on HPV were mainly dedicated to adult women, excluding teenagers and omitting young males. It should therefore be of primary importance that school-based education and vaccination programmes be standardized.

Abstract Background: Despite changing sexual norms and mores generally perceived to be permissive of sexual expression, parents continue to serve as gateways to uptake of reproductive health services and commodities in our cultural settings. However, their support for adolescent uptake of human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine are not well explored and documented. This study aims to assess parental knowledge and awareness of HPV infection and cervical cancer and their support for HPV vaccination for their adolescent children. Methods: In a descriptive cross sectional study 612 parents from in Ibadan North Local Government Area were interviewed using a pre-tested semi structured interviewer administered questionnaire to assess the awareness of HPV infection and cervical cancer as well as parental support for the vaccine. Results: Only a few of the respondents were aware of HPV infection (10.5%) and the HPV vaccine (6.5%), respectively. About 64.3% of those that were aware of HPV knew it can be transmitted through sexual intercourse. However, 78.4% supported the administration of the vaccine to their adolescent daughters. Reported reasons for not supporting HPV vaccination were high cost of the vaccine (32.2%) and lack of awareness of the vaccine (49.2%). Earning a monthly income above the minimum wage of 18,000 Naira increases the likelihood of parental support for HPV vaccination uptake for adolescents (p<0.001). Conclusion: Ignorance and poverty remain as barriers to widespread coverage of the vaccine among adolescents. Health education and promotion on HPV infection and the HPV vaccine to the general public and subsidization of the vaccine to promote its uptake is advocated.

Background: Pediatric dentists could play a key role in the prevention of human papilloma virus (HPV)-related oropharyngeal cancer (OP-cancer). The aim of this study was to assess knowledge, perception, and attitude on HPV-related OP-cancer, HPV infection, and HPV vaccination among Italian pediatric dentists. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted. Pediatric dentists received, by email, a link to participate in the questionnaire online. The questionnaire comprised four parts: (i) demographic information, (ii) knowledge on HPV-related OP-cancer, HPV infection, and HPV vaccine, (iii–iiii) perceptions and attitude on HPV-related OP-cancer, HPV infection, and HPV vaccine. Data were statistically analyzed with Kruskal–Wallis and Mann–Whitney test and Pearson’s chi-square test. Results: A total of 271 pediatric dentists completed the questionnaire. Results showed a good overall knowledge; a positive perception of their role in HPV disease prevention; a good attitude in discussing sensitive topics; a need for acquiring more information about HPV’s connection to cancer, HPV infection, and HPV vaccine. Conclusions: Improving educational training programs, as well as informing about prevention of HPV-related OP-cancer, will place pediatric dentists in the front line of HPV diseases primary prevention.

Background: Human papilloma virus (HPV) infection is the major risk factor for cervical cancer. Pap smear is the commonest technique for early screening and diagnosis of cervical cancer.Methods: Cross sectional study was carried out at a medical and dental institution of Punjab, India, among 84 medical and dental female undergraduate students, falling in the age group of 18-25 years using a validated and guided questionnaire. Goal of the study was to raise the attention of the underrated and unaware agenda of prevention of cervical carcinoma by available vaccines.Results: 96.42%, 25%, population was aware of HPV vaccination in 3rd, 2nd, medical students respectively and 60.71% in 2nd year dental students. 8.33% of the whole population (n=84) was vaccinated against HPV. The main reasons of not taking the vaccination were that the students had not heard of such a vaccine followed by the cost of the vaccine.Conclusions: Medical and dental undergraduates are not adequately aware about the HPV vaccine and are not vaccinated in large number.
