Formal Education in the 21st Century is focused on the development of learners’ skills and competencies essential to navigate the complexities and uncertainties of the age. Effective acquisition of these skills in the school is predicated on adequate provision of technological resources, adequate school infrastructure and continuous professional development of teachers for innovative instructional delivery. Therefore, this study was carried out to investigate the extent to which infrastructural provisions and continuous professional development of teachers in secondary schools in Nigeria support the development and acquisition of 21st Century teaching and learning skills. The study which adopted the impact of school infrastructure on learning by Barrett et al.as a conceptual framework, used descriptive survey design. Two self-constructed instruments were used to collect data from (20) selected secondary schools, (50) teachers and (200) students. Data were analysed using frequency count, percentage score, mean, and standard deviation. Findings showed that the schools visited lack infrastructural provisions, the teachers do not have the requisite skills and the students are not aware of any other means of learning different from the conventional styles offered by their teachers. Therefore, this study offered a two-prong approach of immediate provision of technological infrastructure for schools and the development of teachers’ professional skills through focused training targeted at enhancing their technological instructional delivery skills.

Digital technologies have a strong impact on changes in the educational environment and activities. In the context of such changes, aggravated by the spread of coronavirus infection and the transition of schools to distance learning, teachers and students are facing the need to actively master digital tools and educational platforms. The authors aim at analyzing the professional gaps of teachers associated with digital literacy and the ability to effectively use digital technologies in educational activities. The conducted sociological research and the results obtained allow the authors to study the existing internal teachers’ gaps and show the main problems in the organization of educational activities in the context of the transition to distance learning and the existing gaps in the use of digital technologies by school teachers. Based on the results of the study, the authors have identified the key areas of the professional development of teachers. They have developed educational programs aimed at skill development and further training of teachers in the Russian Federation and foreign countries on such topics as the digital educational environment and the use of open educational resources, methods of using digital technologies in the organization of educational activities, methods and techniques of organization feedback, pedagogical communication in the digital environment, and information security and ethics in the digital environment. The authors have determined the conditions for the professional development of teachers in the process of skill development and further training, as well as self-education (including spontaneous training in the workplace). The authors believe that the increase in teachers’ digital literacy, based on filling their professional gaps, will help to improve the quality of general education and create conditions for the elimination of the digital divide of the population.

The Covid-19 pandemic provoked a paradigm shift never imagined by higher education institutions in the world, but especially in developing countries. Drawing on findings from a PhD study, this article aims to highlight the way in which Covid-19 accelerated professional development and training and technology adoption by academics in higher education institutions and large-scale open and distance learning institutions in Africa. A total of 20 academics and relevant stakeholders from two of Africa’s largest open and distance learning institutions were interviewed, and their views are reported. The data were analysed using thematic analysis. The findings show an increase in training and professional development of academics during the pandemic. The study also reveals the way in which Covid-19 fostered the speed and ease with which technology was adopted and used by academics for teaching and learning. The results of this research study may contribute to research of various topics on technology adoption and academics’ professional development and training and future approaches post-Covid-19.

The article defines the necessity of involving e-learning of teachers’ assistants in postgraduate pedagogical education to ensure their continuous professional development on the job. The authors have studied the European experience on inclusive teaching and learning and e-resources that can be used in postgraduate pedagogical education of teachers’ assistants. In this article you can find the results of e-learning readiness survey of teachers’ assistants and their choice of postgraduate education forms: intramural, distance learning, blended learning. The authors have analyzed which forms of instructions meet the needs of teachers’ assistants: individual programs of professional development, online consultations, e-coaching, blended learning. The conditions for e-learning implementation in postgraduate education have been defined, they are as follows: the availability of informational and educational environment (multimedia-materials, distance learning on inclusive education, online group for mutual help and messaging, online expert help: teachers and experts available for online consultations, Q&A and managing forums); digital competency of the learners (information search and sharing ideas via the Internet; developing e-resources for inclusive education); motivation of teachers for continuous professional development and their willingness to cooperate online. It is proved that e-learning is an essential precondition for continuous professional development of teachers’ assistants. The model of teachers’ assistants’ e-learning in postgraduate pedagogical education has been presented. We defined examples of didactic tasks during the implementation of e-learning and examples of implementation based on the usage of information and communication technologies (consultations, communication of educational information, sharing experience, monitoring and evaluation). E-learning for teachers’ assistants allows to: determine their personal speed, time and the sequence of learning; create individual learning paths within information and educational environment and develop personal learning networks.
