In the UK alone there are approximately 175,000 acute burn injuries /year. There is a great variation in the way these injuries are managed. Advances in our understanding of the pathophysiology and natural history of burn injuries have highlighted the importance of early intervention in minimizing later functional and cosmetic morbidity. Differences in beliefs and ethnic background have a large impact on the way that burns are initially dealt with, as we know that only a minority of patients presenting with burns are optimally managed pre-hospital. Lack of education and conflicting information about burns first aid is believed to be a major factor in the common occurrence of burnt patients presenting with a variety of domestic remedies being applied to their burns as first aid. Judicious application of simple burns first aid is the first step for soft tissue preservation, improvement of outcomes and a decrease in the need for operative management.

Abstract Ageism First Aid is an online course designed to combat ageism, advance Gerontology, and generate revenue for Gerontology programs and GSA/AGHE activities. The project was funded by a grant from the Retirement Research Foundation and sponsored by the AGHE Academic Program Development Committee. The AFA course content is informed by developmental, social, and cognitive psychology, sociocultural and cognitive linguistics, speech-language science, and geriatrics. The content cultivates ageism awareness by replacing the common misconceptions about aging that underlie ageism with facts. The content also cultivates cultural consciousness and uses concise common language accessible to learners of diverse backgrounds. During this symposium, participants will be introduced to the course content and explore the benefits of this multidisciplinary approach to curriculum development. The results summary of the AFA course pilot will be presented as evidence of the course efficacy. Participants will leave able to utilize AFA within their institutions and local Aging Networks.

In 1948, Jean Dubuffet wrote a thirty-one-page pamphlet entitled Peinturez hardi (Paint boldly!) for his unrealized Almanach de l'art brut. Divided into twelve monthly installments, this “treatise on the techniques of painting” reads like a how-to manual, presenting concise, straightforward guidelines for what materials to use and how to use them. As a practical guide for the amateur, it inventories and evaluates products on the market (much like an issue of Consumer Reports) and then offers more economical, do-it-yourself recipes for the “common man.” Drawing largely from the techniques and materials of house painting, Dubuffet aligns himself with the worker as opposed to the professional artist and insists upon art as labor. As yet unpublished, Peinturez hardi underscores materiality as absolutely central to Dubuffet's understanding of what art brut is and how it differentiates itself from arts culturels.
