A "Retreat" for Pediatric Interns

For the past two years, pediatric interns at the University of Washington have been relieved of their clinical duties for five days to participate in a "retreat". Their places were taken by pediatric practitioners as a continuing education experience. The chief benefit of the retreat was the coming together of the intern group and the subsequent support they were able to give to each other. The educational content was deemed less important than the fact that the retreat occurred.

Continuing education “mini-residencies” in drug information services were sponsored by the University of Washington School of Pharmacy's Division of Continuing Education and the University of Washington Drug Information Service (DIS) in August of 1976, 1977, and 1978. Each mini-residency covered a two-week period (a total of 80 hours) and was divided into didactic and experiential sessions. The university's DIS was the major resource for the residents. The two-week residency was designed to provide education and experience in the areas of drug information retrieval, analysis, and dissemination. The program was assessed through pre- and post-testing and a midcourse evaluation session. The residency format of the program allowed practicing pharmacists to return to the university to develop their skills in the area of drug information. The article presents a model for other drug information pharmacists who may want to offer similar training programs.

In a recent American Journal of Hospice and Palliative Medicine article entitled “Ethics Education During Palliative Medicine Fellowship,” Dr Elizabeth Vig and Dr Susan Merel detail the ethics curriculum of the University of Washington School of Medicine’s Palliative Medicine Fellowship, including their efforts in the past several years to increase and bolster the fellowship’s ethics curriculum. This letter builds upon this topic and discusses some other strategies and methods for ethics education and training that fellowship programs may consider adopting to bolster their ethics curriculum.

Students often face problems during their higher education experience. This study aimed to identify problems experienced by students seen at the Technical Implementation Unit of the Guidance and Counseling Services at Yogyakarta State University (UPT LBK UNY). This study’s sample was 313 students who attended counseling during the past year at UPT LBK UNY. Purposive sampling was used. This was quantitative research, and the data were collected through documentation review and interviews. Quantitative descriptive techniques were used to analyze the data. The results showed that 45.05% of students had problems in their personal lives. Only 0.96% had career problems. Two students had problems in the personal-sociallearning-career fields simultaneously. Recommendations are provided for the university on developing the right strategies to overcome the problems experienced by students. During the past several years, a systematic search for novae in the Magellanic Clouds has been carried out at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory. The Curtis Schmidt telescope, on loan to CTIO from the University of Michigan is used to obtain plates every two weeks during the observing season. An objective prism is used on the telescope. This provides additional low-dispersion spectroscopic information when a nova is discovered. The plates cover an area of 5°x5°. One plate is sufficient to cover the Small Magellanic Cloud and four are taken of the Large Magellanic Cloud with an overlap so that the central bar is included on each plate. The methods used in the search have been described by Graham and Araya (1971). In the CTIO survey, 8 novae have been discovered in the Large Cloud but none in the Small Cloud. The survey was not carried out in 1974 or 1976. During 1974, one nova was discovered in the Small Cloud by MacConnell and Sanduleak (1974).

The University of Iowa Central Electron Microscopy Research Facility(CEMRF) was established in 1981 to support all faculty, staff and students needing this technology. Initially the CEMRF was operated with one TEM, one SEM, three staff members and supported about 30 projects a year. During the past twelve years, the facility has replaced all instrumentation pre-dating 1981, and now includes 2 TEM's, 2 SEM's, 2 EDS systems, cryo-transfer specimen holders for both TEM and SEM, 2 parafin microtomes, 4 ultamicrotomes including cryoultramicrotomy, a Laser Scanning Confocal microscope, a research grade light microscope, an Ion Mill, film and print processing equipment, a rapid cryo-freezer, freeze substitution apparatus, a freeze-fracture/etching system, vacuum evaporators, sputter coaters, a plasma asher, and is currently evaluating scanning probe microscopes for acquisition. The facility presently consists of 10 staff members and supports over 150 projects annually from 44 departments in 5 Colleges and 10 industrial laboratories. One of the unique strengths of the CEMRF is that both Biomedical and Physical scientists use the facility.

The Tower Mill, Brisbane's oldest extant building, was excavated by the University of Queensland to determine for the Brisbane City Council the heritage potential of surrounding subsurface deposits.  Following the employment of GPR, excavation revealed interesting stratifications, features and artefacts.  Analysis permits an explanation for these deposits which augment an already fascinating history of the site's use over the past 170 years or so.

In recent years, providing higher education in the form of work-based learning has become more important in the higher education (HE) policy and practice almost in all EU countries. Work-based learning (WBL) in HE should support the development of competences of self-guided learners and adjust the university education better to the needs of the workplace. The study is based on two pilot projects of WBL in HE in Estonia: Tourism and Restaurant Management professional HE programme and the master’s programme in Business Information Technology. The model of integrative pedagogy, based on the social-constructivist learning theory, is taken as a theoretical foundation for the study. A qualitative study based on semi-structured interviews with the target groups. The data analysis used a horizontal analysis to find cross-cutting themes and identify patterns of actions and connections. It appears, that the challenge for HE is to create better cooperation among stakeholders; the challenge for workplaces is connected with better involvement of students; the challenge for students is to take more initiative and responsibility in communication with workplaces.
