Aim: The aim of the research is to discuss if the lean thinking methodology may contribute to enhance interdisciplinarity and collaboration in higher education engineering courses, namely when applied to engineering students at a Portuguese Higher Education Technology School. Methods. Lean thinking is an organisational methodology that uses innovation to organise and optimise human activities with the aim of eliminating waste. This methodology can be applied to a wide range of activities envisaging to mainly perform tasks that effectively add value to the related processes. When used in an educational context, this approach may also contribute to identifying which activities successfully contribute to add value to the students’ learning process, as opposed to being ineffective for that aim. Results. Current study focuses on interdisciplinarity through a set of collaborative Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) tasks that were planned, tested and assessed in an engineering Higher Education context. Conclusion. One of the main aspects envisaged through the developed CLIL tasks was to contribute to the enhancement of peer-to-peer collaborative learning in an interdisciplinary context, another was to reflect on reciprocal cooperation methodologies that enhance interdisciplinarity in Higher Education.

In the 'Information Age' where the demand of knowledge raises, the students are expected to retrieve more information to support and develop their learning process. Some universities have progressively opened up to the opportunity of e-learning concept, and they are currently integrating e-learning in their teaching to accommodate the diverse need in learning and providing more interactive materials that allow easy access to information.  E-learning has the potential to transform the way of teaching and studying across the board. It can develop standards, and improve involvement in learning. This cannot substitute teachers or lecturers role, but in addition to existing methods it can develop the quality and decrease the time spent. This paper aims at presenting an overview of the extent to which e-learning is used at higher education and explores e-learning from the perspective of students and teachers. It also briefly explains the current condition of e-learning that utilizes interactive technology to enhance the learning experience. Keywords: e-learning, higher education, technology

This research aims to identify the learning styles of Portuguese higher education students in business administration, and in return to enable the identification of effective ways to foster the teaching-learning process. The research is divided into two parts: a theoretical approach and the analysis and discussion of the results obtained in light of the learning style of these students as characterized by the Felder-Silvernman model. The data were collected from 3 Portuguese Higher Education Institutions and seek to contribute to the improvement of the learning process in business management courses and to provide for adequate planning of learning strategies aimed at educational success. The statistical analysis of the data was performed with SPSS version 25.0 for Windows and included both descriptive and inferential statistics. The results of the study are consistent with the findings in the literature in similar contexts, suggesting that learning styles vary according to the individual. Regarding gender, a variable that has been studied relatively little to date, there is also evidence in the study that female students seem to use cognitive strategies significantly more than their male counterparts.

The dynamic society we live in requires constant adaptation and innovation on every aspect of our daily lives, allowing us to improve the necessities of different people by doing it. For this study, we used a new approach with project-based learning to go beyond the typical environment in higher education and bring solutions to real-life scenarios. The project was developed with undergraduate engineering students in collaboration with a rehabilitation institute in Mexico City to design a physical therapy routine using the NAO robot. It allowed interaction between young patients in real time and fostered empathy while developing a final usable product. The study measured the usability of the robotic platform during the rehabilitation sessions and the reproducibility of the project through Cronbach's alpha evaluation. The usability results show a higher interest in the project from both the patients and the medical staff involved while constructing the material needed to develop a product that matches the standards given by the rehabilitation institute. Implications for practice or policy: Therapists could change traditional approaches to caregiving while adopting new technological methodologies using robots. Higher education students could supplement their school curricula with real-case scenarios such as creating innovative therapy sessions for people with physical disabilities. Schools might need to collaborate with a wide range of institutions to provide technological solutions to real problems.

Kata kunci: Active Learning, Collaborative Learning  Abstract: Increasing Student Participation Through Collaborative Learning. Changes in time require students to be more active and creative. But, learning method that applied in higher education still use traditional method, which is lecturer has an important role in the learning process. As a result, students only become objects in the learning system that makes them passive. They don’t have initiative to build their own knowledge because of the lack of opportunities that they are involved in or participating in the learning process. Active learning is a learning model that is considered effective to increase the activity of the students in the learning process. One way to apply this learning model is to apply collaborative learning method, where the perspective of this method is that someone is said to learn if the person is actively involved in or participates in the learning process.        Keyword: Active Learning, Collaborative Learning

This research study examines the attitudes of Portuguese higher education students regarding compulsory digital and distance learning university courses during the second semester of the academic year 2019–2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. The methodology was quantitative, being the undergraduate and postgraduate students surveyed to find their perceptions about distance and online education in Portugal. The findings of the study highlighted the relationship between distance and online learning. The key concern of the respondents is related to the formal and contextual dimensions of the online class regime. The values examined, taken as a whole, allow us to conclude that with this teaching regime, in terms of awareness, there is acceptance and benefit. The sense of ambiguity in which this transformation took place, as well as the climate surrounding this phase, are worth noting. The teaching and evaluation methodologies used have been embraced and show a very wide range of choices on the part of the teaching teams and the students’ various interests, just as in the teaching regime of the classroom. The fact that students feel the need for face-to-face classes, however, is of great importance for practical and laboratory classes. This reality, which is a challenge to face in the future, is hard to overcome.

English skills will automatically leave English for Specific Purposes (ESP) students (mechanical enginering, accounting, animal husbandry etc.) more opportunities to access international journals and textbooks related to their study. Therefore this research was conducted in order to analyze (1) learners/ target needs (necessities, lacks and wants) in ESP learning process in class. The learning outcomes were then used to determine ESP learning emphasized learners needs. So, the learning activities will be more fun and engaging.  The instrument to collect the data was questionnaire (likert scale) distributed to the 64 mechanical engineering students of University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) as the subject. The data was analyzed using a simple statistical measurement for interpretation purposes. The research finding was divided into three. Firstly, the students necessities for ESP learning were to get connected globally through English and to prepare them for higher education. Secondly, their lacks of English competence are that they have less sufficient perfomance to complete the exercises in class. Lastly, regarding their wants, they expected that English would pave a road to gain a decent job in an international company. Therefore, ESP development has to focus on the students’ preferences above as the priority. It means that ESP English teaching and textbooks ones are suggested to pay attention to those findings.

Evaluating the students’ language learning process requires a lot of analysis and reflection. Although some research has been conducted to observe the way teachers use assessment practices in diverse educational contexts, I consider there needs to be more research in order to examine how assessment practices are carried out in our educational context. This article presents a pedagogical project carried out in a higher education institution with EFL learners. It focuses on the implementation of self-assessment practices conducted in the context of the project followed by some preliminary results that I have encountered.
