The sheep body measurements are useful indicators of type and function that allow improving the selection. Biometric studies have shown in sheep a relationship between these measures with some productive variables. The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the testicular development and their relationship with morphometric parameters on Colombian hairy sheep of Sampués, Sucre, Colombia. Weaned males (n=12) born between February and April of 2014 were used, and the following measures were taken every twenty-eight days: scrotal circumference (CS), body weight (PC), rump height (AG), withers height (AC), and right and left testicular length (LTD and LTL).The sheep were between three to twelve months old. A multiple regression analysis (RA) was done from PC; AG; AC; TL. To describe the variation of LT, the model included only the variables PC; AG; AC. The grade of association between the studied variables was performed by a Pearson correlation. Scrotal circumference showed a high correlation with the evaluated morphometric parameters. In the RA analysis, the PC influenced the variable CE (p<0.05), while other variables did not have a significant influence. According to the regression coefficient associated to the measurement, per each kg of PC that an animal gained in weight, there was a corresponding increase of 0,09 cm in the CS.

Data collected from 900 goats sampled from Borno, Sokoto and Ogun States from three different breeds on the following metric characters: Body Weight (BW), Age, Horn Length (HL), Ear length (EL), Shoulder width (SW), Neck circumference (NC), body length (BL), Withers Height (WH), Heart Girth (HG), Pouch Girth (PG), Tail Length (TL) and Scrotal circumference (SC) were subjected to stepwise multiple linear regression. Results obtained showed Live weight changes with body measurements were poorly to highly predictable with R2 values ranging between 0.000 - 0.031 in animals < 1 year old, 0.000-0.241in animals 1-2 years and 0.000-0.658 in animals 2 years and above. It was thus concluded that the low, moderate and high predictive power obtained from this study might be due to instability of regression coefficient at different ages and points also to decreasing environmental impact on growth with increase in age.

SummaryBody measurements and weights of animals of varying ages were recorded in White Fulani (Bunaji), Sokoto Gudali and N'dama breeds of cattle. Chest girth accounted for 86–96% of the variation in body weight in the three breeds. The linear regression coefficient of weight on chest girth in the N'dama differed significantly from the other two breeds. Within each breed, the regression coefficient of young animals was lower than those of older groups. The variables that contributed most to improving the prediction of weights when added to chest girth were rump length and body length. Animals with low body condition scores had lower regression coefficients of weight on chest girth than those with high scores.

Scrotal circumference measurements were taken on 255 Salers bulls located at five growth performance test stations at the 56-d (26.9 ± 0.2 cm), 84-d (28.8 ± 0.2 cm) and 140-d weighings (30.8 ± 0.2 cm) in 1986, and on 248 Salers bulls located at four test stations at the 140-d weighing (31.3 ± 0.1 cm) in 1987. The estimated scrotal circumference measurement for Salers bulls at 365 d of age was 29.4 cm. Test station, percentage of Salers breeding within test station, sire of bull within year and test station, and the covariate body weight all contributed to the variance in scrotal circumference measurements. Incorporation of sire of bull within year and test station into the statistical model accounted for a much higher proportion of the variance in scrotal circumference measurements (r2 = 65%) than when percentage of Salers breeding within test station was substituted (r2 = 32%). Key words: Testicular development, scrotal circumference, Salers bulls, recommendations

The relationship between heart girth, wither height, body length and body weight in 3- to 9.5-month-old pre-pubertal Finnish Ayrshire heifers gaining 600-650 g/d was analysed (experiment I). Regression analysis showed that heart girth was the trait most highly correlated to body weight (R2 = 0.969). Including body length or wither height as a second term in the regression, increased R2 values only slightly. When the relationship between heart girth and body weight was used to predict the body weight of heifers reared at two feeding levels (experiment II), the precision of prediction was affected by the plane of nutrition. Actual body weight for a given heart girth was slightly higher on the high than on the low feeding level. It is, nevertheless, concluded that the equations presented in the paper can be used to estimate accurately the body weight of pre-pubertal (95-140-cm heart girth) Ayrshire heifers gaining 550-700 g/d.

Moringa oleifera (Lamarck) seed is a novel feedstuff that can be incorporated into poultry nutrition and a potential cheaper alternative than the current conventional feedstuff in Nigeria. The aim of the study was to determine the effect Moringa oleifera seed meal (MOSM) on the relationship between body weight and body morphometric parameters of local and exotic chickens. The total sum of one hundred and ninety two chickens comprising of ninety six Nigerian Ecotype local chickens and Marshall broiler chickens in four dietary treatments with three replicates (of eight birds per replicate for each genotype of chicken) per treatment. Four experimental diets containing 0, 5, 10 and 15 % MOSM were used. Data were analyzed using the Pearson Correlation model. The study showed that the association between morphometric parameters and body weights decreased significantly (p<0.05) with increasing levels of MOSM (r decreased from 0.72 to 0.52) however all the associations were positive which signified that the inclusion of MOSM influenced the level of relationship between body weight and body morphometric parameters. This study concluded that 5% dietary inclusion of MOSM would improve growth performance in YENLC and Marshall broiler chickens.

Abstract. Dakhlan A, Hamdani MDI, Putri DR, Sulastri, Qisthon A. 2021. Short Communication: Prediction of body weight based on body measurements in female Saburai goats. Biodiversitas 22: 1391-1396. Saburai goat is a new composite breed in Lampung Province with little information on its performance. This research aimed to predict body weight based on body measurements, namely body length (BL), chest girth (CG), and shoulder height (SH) in female Saburai goats. This study used 42 female Saburai goats aged 3-4 years. The method used in this study was a survey, namely all-female Saburai goats aged 3-4 years were used for this research. The data obtained were analyzed using correlation and simple and multiple linear regression analysis using R program. Coefficient determination (R2), adjusted R2, residual standard error (RSE), Akaike information criterion (AIC), Bayesian information criterion (BIC), and stepwise regression analysis were used to find the best and most parsimonious regression model to predict BW based on body measurements. The results showed that BL, CG, and SH were positively and significantly correlated with BW of female Saburai goats with correlation coefficients of 0.858, 0.956 and 0.862, respectively. Chest girth was the best predictor for BW if using single predictor with regression equation of Ŷ = -31.17 + 0.93X2. However, combination of BL and CG was the best and most parsimonious regression model in predicting BW of female Saburai goat with regression equation of Ŷ = -36.09 + 0.31X1 + 0.72X2 with R2 = 0.941, adjusted R2 = 0.938, RSE = 2.842, AIC = 216.73 and BIC = 223.78. In conclusion, all body measurements in this study (particularly combination of BL and CG) could be used as predictor for BW with high accuracy of prediction. The result of this study suggested that CG and BL could be as indirect criteria to improve BW of female Saburai goats.
