Panstrongylus geniculatus (Latreille, 1811) is the most widely distributed species in Brazil. This study presents the first report of this species collected inside a building in the “Centro de Estudos Ambientais e Desenvolvimento Sustentável”, at the Vila Dois Rios, Ilha Grande, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The new record is important to understand the risk of Chagas disease transmission, mainly because this species is commonly found infected with Trypanosoma cruzi (Chagas, 1909).

Panstrongylus diasi Pinto & Lent, 1946, previously known from throught the Brazilian center-west, is reported for the first time in Mato Grosso state, Brazil. We found 3 specimens, 1 of them from an urban area of Barra do Garças. The new record of P. diasi is important for the understanding of the epidemiology of Chagas disease, mainly because this species is found naturally infected with Trypanosoma cruzi (Chagas, 1909). Studies on the ecology, biogeography, and vector–host/parasite interactions of P. diasi are essential.

A study was conducted on all newborns from mothers with Chagas disease who were attended at Hospital Donación F. Santojanni between January 1, 2001, and August 31, 2007. Each child was investigated for the presence of Trypanosoma cruzi parasitemia through direct examination of blood under the microscope using the buffy coat method on three occasions during the first six months of life. Serological tests were then performed. Ninety-four children born to mothers infected with Trypanosoma cruzi were attended over the study period. Three of these children were born to mothers coinfected with the human immunodeficiency virus. Vertical transmission of Chagas disease was diagnosed in 13 children, in all cases by identifying parasitemia. The overall Chagas disease transmission rate was 13.8% (13/94). It was 100% (3/3) among the children born to mothers with HIV infection and 10.9% (10/91) among children born to mothers without HIV [Difference = 0.89; CI95 = 0.82-0.95; p = 0.0021]. We concluded that coinfection with HIV could increase the risk of vertical transmission of Chagas disease.

INTRODUCTION: from an epidemiological point of view, more than 120 species of triatomine (Hemiptera, Reduviidae) are known. The occurrence and positivity for Trypanosoma cruzi in triatomines in 16 municipalities of the Triângulo Mineiro and Alto Paranaíba were evaluated from January 2002 to December 2004. METHODS: the triatomines were captured basically according to the classic norms of the National Health Foundation. The parasitological exams of the triatomines were conducted according to the technique described by the Ministry of Health. During the study period, 990 specimens of triatomines were captured and of these, 771 could be examined. RESULTS: five species were identified: Triatoma sordida, Panstrongylus diasi, Panstrongylus megistus, Panstrongylus geniculatus and Rhodnius neglectus. Triatoma sordida represented 71.5% of all the triatomines captured, followed by Panstrongylus megistus (18%), Rhodnius neglectus (9.3%), Panstrongylus diasi (0.8%) and Panstrongylus geniculatus (0.4%). Of the total number of triatomines examined, 2.7% were positive for Trypanosoma cruzi. Panstrongylus megistus was the species that presented the highest rates of infection by Trypanosoma cruzi (8.3%), followed by Rhodnius neglectus (2.9%) and Triatoma sordida (1.4%). CONCLUSIONS: there is a need to adapt to new circumstances in epidemiology, with greater emphasis on entomological surveillance, since the potential for adaptation of secondary species of triatomines exists, especially where Chagas' disease is already under control.

A new record of Plectropomus pessuliferus (Serranidae: Epinephelinae) wasdocumented based on morphological characters and DNA barcoding. The present study stems from initial efforts in surveying the terrestrial gastropod fauna of Acre state, an undersampled Amazonian region in northwestern Brazil. Herein, we report the first record of the operculate snail Helicina chionea Pilsbry, 1949 in Brazil, alongside the first records of two other helicinids from Acre: H. juruana Ihering, 1905 and H. laterculus F.C. Baker, 1914. With the present new record, there is a total of 38 helicinid species reported from Brazil.

Beginning the study of chronic pathologic changes in pancreas of hamsters experimentally infected with Trypanosoma cruzi Vic strain, hepatocyte metaplasia was observed in one animal from infected group. This is the first report of oncocytes in Chagas' disease, which could be due to aberrant regenerative response to pancreas inflammatory process.

Introducción. La notificación de triatominos en las viviendas de algunos barrios de Bucaramanga motivó la realización de este estudio.Objetivo. Evaluar la intrusión de triatominos y mamíferos, así como algunos factores de riesgo para la enfermedad de Chagas en viviendas urbanas.Materiales y métodos. En un barrio de Bucaramanga, Santander, se recolectaron triatominos mensualmente durante un año con participación comunitaria mediante búsqueda manual en el alumbrado público, y el uso de trampas de luz, cebo animal y atrayentes químicos en el bosque cercano. Los reservorios se recolectaron con trampas cebadas. Los insectos y mamíferos se determinaron y examinaron para establecer su infección natural. Los factores de riesgo de las viviendas se midieron mediante una encuesta sobre factores sociales y ambientales.Resultados. Se recolectaron 11 adultos de Panstrongylus geniculatus y 63 de Rhodnius pallescens en el bosque, en zonas de recreación en el peridomicilio y en el domicilio, incluidas dos hembras y 21 ninfas de R. pallescens en dormitorios. Se capturaron dos ejemplares de Didelphis marsupialis en el bosques adyacente. De los 11 individuos de P. geniculatus capturados, se examinaron nueve, de los cuales cinco fueron positivos para Trypanosoma cruzi (56 %); de los 63 individuos de R. pallescens capturados, se examinaron ocho, cuatro de los cuales fueron positivos para T. cruzi (50 %). De dos especímenes de D. marsupiales capturados, uno fue examinado y se encontró que era positivo para T. cruzi. No se pudo establecer un factor de riesgo significativo, sin embargo, las viviendas con reporte de triatominos se encontraban más cerca del bosque adyacente.Conclusiones. El hallazgo de especies de triatominos intrusivas y de mamíferos con T. cruzi en el domicilio y el peridomicilio, así como en los bosques periurbanos, demuestra el riesgo de infección en las poblaciones que habitan en viviendas urbanas adyacentes a los ecótopos donde se mantiene el ciclo silvestre.
