The present investigation revealed the existence of hybrids belonging to the Culex pipiens Complex in four localities of La Pampa Province, Argentina, thus expanding the distribution of the hybrid form south to the northeast of that province. The identification was based on characters of the male genitalia and the siphonal index of the fourth-instar larval exuviae. A summary of the geographical distribution of species of Culex pipiens complex in Argentina is also presented here.

Taxonomic notes are presented on the former Ascalaphidae (owlflies), now subfamily Ascalaphinae of the family Myrmeleontidae from Pakistan. An updated checklist of new records is provided that accounts for all known 15 genera and 22 species from Pakistan, excluding the species of the tribe Palparini. Geographical distribution maps and an updated identification key to all known genera and species from Pakistan are also given. We synonymized two monotypic genera, Horischema Mészáros & Ábrahám, 2003 and Perissoschema Mészáros & Ábrahám, 2003 both as junior synonyms of Ogcogaster Westwood, 1847 based on very similar male genitalia and external morphological characters. Moreover, Perissoschema evae Mészáros & Ábrahám, 2003 is treated as a junior synonym of Ogcogaster segmentator Westwood, 1847. We recorded three genera for the first time from Pakistan, i.e., Acheron Lefèbvre, 1842, Glyptobasis McLachlan, 1873, and Suphalomitus van der Weele, 1909. To more completely resolve the generic or specific status of those poorly known species from Pakistan, broader sampling throughout the country is needed.

As a result of close somatic pairing of the chromosomes visible leptotene stages do not occur in either Culex pipiens or Aedes albopictus. Bouquet stages were not observed during early meiotic prophase. The sperm of C. pipiens consist of a head 14 μ long and a tail 200 μ long. More than 80% of sperm treated with 3H-Tdr could be sufficiently labeled by feeding fourth instar larvae 10 μCi/ml/larva 3H-Tdr for about 3 days. An almost complete label could be found in the sperm head and only some few grains in the DNA of the mitochondrial bodies of the tail.In the C. pipiens female, meiosis is activated by the entrance of the sperm and karyogamy is effected about 50 minutes after oviposition. During the meiotic divisions the sperm moves to the center of the egg and fuses with the pronucleus. If supernumerary sperm are present they most often are found near the micropylar pole of the egg.Although the frequency of polyspermy is low, one or two sperm are usually present in the fertilized eggs.In incompatible crosses with strains of different geographical origins (♂ Hamburg ♀ Paris) the egg is activated by the sperm and the meiotic divisions begin but the sperm does not succeed in fusing with the pronucleus. The developing embryos are haploid and embryogenesis leads to irregular differentiation; 99.9% of the embryos die. Apparently reactions between sperm and egg cytoplasm prevent karyogamy. The different models of cross-reactions in the C. pipiens-complex are discussed; mitochondrial DNA is suggested to be involved in fertilization.

Culex (Culex) dolosus (Lynch Arribálzaga, 1891) is re-described and compared with Cx. eduardoi Casal & Garcia (1968) based on morphological characteristics. Both species are morphologically similar, and they have been largely misidentified throughout Brazil. Adult male and female, fourth instar larvae, and pupae of Cx. dolosus were examined, based on specimens from Pico do Itapeva, Pindamonhangaba Municipality, Serra da Mantiqueira, São Paulo State, southern Brazil. Male genitalia, larvae and pupae are illustrated. Geographical distribution is summarized from published records, and information on bionomics is based on the literature and field data.

Español.  Se dan a conocer nuevas localizaciones y datos corológicos para 98 especies (61 Rhodophyta, 22 Ochrophyta, 15 Chlorophyta) de algas bentónicas marinas recolectadas en el intermareal y submareal de más de 80 localidades de las costas atlánticas y cantábricas de la Península Ibérica. Polysiphonia devoniensis, P. fibrata y Zonaria tournefortii son novedad para Portugal y 5 especies (Bonnemaisonia hamifera, Calosiphonia vermicularis, P. devoniensis, Hincksia intermedia y Derbesia marina stadium Halicystis ovalis) son nuevas citas para Galicia. Paralelamente, se aportan 101 primeras citas provinciales (2 Guipúzcoa, 1 Vizcaya, 8 Cantabria, 5 Asturias, 7 Lugo, 1 A Coruña, 8 Pontevedra, 1 Beira litoral, 15 Estremadura, 20 Alentejo, 25 Algarve y 8 Cádiz) y, además, se dan a conocer 108 segundas citas provinciales. Aunque la flora bentónica marina del Atlántico Peninsular ha sido objeto de numerosos estudios, estos nuevos hallazgos corológicos ponen en evidencia que todavía son necesarios más estudios florísticos en estas costas.English.  In this work, we provide new records and geographical distribution data for 98 seaweeds (61 Rhodophyta, 22 Ochrophyta, 15 Chlorophyta) inhabiting more than 80 sites (intertidal and subtidal) of the Atlantic Iberian Peninsula. In the period from 2015 to 2020, an entomological survey for the presence of West Nile virus (WNV) and Usutu virus (USUV) in mosquitoes was performed in northwestern Croatia. A total of 20,363 mosquitoes were sampled in the City of Zagreb and Međimurje county, grouped in 899 pools and tested by real-time RT-PCR for WNV and USUV RNA. All pools were negative for WNV while one pool each from 2016 (Aedes albopictus), 2017 (Culex pipiens complex), 2018 (Cx. pipiens complex), and 2019 (Cx. pipiens complex), respectively, was positive for USUV. The 2018 and 2019 positive pools shared 99.31% nucleotide homology within the USUV NS5 gene and both clustered within USUV Europe 2 lineage. The next-generation sequencing of one mosquito pool (Cx. pipiens complex) collected in 2018 in Zagreb confirmed the presence of USUV and revealed several dsDNA and ssRNA viruses of insect, bacterial and mammalian origin.

The geographical distribution of Muscidae from Latin America has been extended. The following eight genera, including 28 species, were collected: Cyrtoneurina (2 spp.), Cyrtoneuropsis (8 spp.), Dolichophaonia (1 sp.), Neomuscina (7 spp.), Ophyra (1 sp.), Phaonia (2 spp.), Philornis (5 spp.), and Polietina (2 spp.). New records and additional collecting data have been provided for Brazil, Colombia, and Costa Rica, including reference maps for the species listed.

The article presents data on morphological and physiological parameters of first-matured females of Russian sturgeon and its hybrid form with a Siberian species, grown in artificial conditions by LLC “Akvatrade”, operating in the Lower Volga region (Astrakhan region). It was found that Russian sturgeon juveniles adapt less satisfactorily to the low winter temperatures of the aquatic environment in comparison with hybrid forms with the Siberian species. As for the offspring obtained from hybrid females, their resistance to low winter temperatures of the aquatic environment was higher, most likely due to features inherited from the Siberian species.
