AbstractPositron annihilation spectroscopy (PAS) has been developed to characterize the free-volume properties of polymers. Positron annihilation lifetime measurements give direct information about the dimension, content, and hole-size distributions of free-volume in amorphous materials. The angular correlation of positron annihilation radiation measurements give additional information about the shape of the free-volume holes in oriented polymeric materials. The unique capability of PAS to probe free-volume properties is from the fact that positronium atom is preferentially trapped in the atomic-scale holes which have a size ranging from 1 to 10 Å.

Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy combined with Doppler broadening of annihilation radiation was applied to study free-volume entities in GeS2-Ga2S3glasses affected by Ga additions. It is shown that Ga-related void sub-system plays a decisive role in positron trapping process, while the overall density variation is defined mainly by Ge-related sub-system. These results serve as basis for new characterization route for inner free-volume structure of these glasses.

AbstractPositron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) has been used to determine the free volume in multiblock polyamide-6/poly-(isoprene) copolymers (PA-6/PI), synthesized via activated anionic bulk copolymerization. The diisocyanate functionalized telechelic PI, blocked with caprolactam (CL) has been used as a commoner and an activator at the same time. The elastic PI block incorporated into the main chain of PA-6 affects the amorphous and crystal phase of the copolymer leading to changing in degree of crystallinity. The positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PAL) and Doppler broadening of annihilation line (DBAL) technique in a set of pure PA-6 and PA-6/PI copolymers with two different compositions have been applied and evaluation of the size of free-volume holes (pores), localized mainly in the disordered regions of the PA-6/PI copolymer by measuring the o-Ps lifetime (τ3) and o-Ps intensity (I3) has been performed.

The variations during isochronal annealing of cold-rolled commercial pure Al (1050) and Al-Mn (3004) has been investigated between room temperature (RT) and 823 K. The annealing stages have been identified as recovery, partial recrystallization, complete recrystallization and grain growth using positron annihilation lifetime (PAL) spectroscopy, Doppler broadening of annihilation radiation (DBAR) spectroscopy and Vickers microhardness (Hv) measurements. The retardation of complete recovery in Al-Mn alloys is due to the presence of vacancy-Mn complexes. A positive correlation has been found between positron annihilation parameters (τav & Snor) and mechanical properties (Hv) for the two alloys under investigation.

ABSTRACTMechanical properties and thermal stability of bulk glassy alloys depend on their chemical composition ratios, although their detailed local structures especially around free volume have not been clarified yet. In order to know the origin of property dependence on alloy composition in Zr-Cu-Al ternary bulk glassy alloys in a view point of atomic scale, positron annihilation lifetime, coincidence Doppler broadening (CDB) and EXAFS (extended X-ray absorption fine structure) measurements have been employed for eutectic Zr50Cu40Al10 and hypoeutectic Zr60Cu30Al10 bulk glassy alloys before and after structural relaxation by annealing below glass transition temperature Tg.The result of CDB experiment, which represents the electron momentum distribution around free volume, shows that significant atomic reordering around free volume does not take place by the annealing in each alloy. Besides, CDB ratio profiles for each alloy suggest that the fraction of Zr atom around free volume does not match the chemical composition of each alloy system. Change in positron lifetime, which is proportional to the size of free volume, during annealing for hypoeutectic alloy almost remains unchanged.
