Herein we demonstrate the specifics of using the positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) method for the study of free volume changes in functional ceramic materials. Choosing technological modification of nanostructured MgAl2O4 spinel as an example, we show that for ceramics with well-developed porosity positron annihilation is revealed through two channels: positron trapping channel and ortho-positronium decay. Positron trapping in free-volume defects is described by the second component of spectra and ortho-positronium decay process by single or multiple components, depending on how well porosity is developed and on the experimental configuration. When using proposed positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy approaches, three components are the most suitable fit in the case of MgAl2O4 ceramics. In the analysis of the second component, it is shown that technological modification (increasing sintering temperature) leads to volume shrinking and decreases the number of defect-related voids. This process is also accompanied by the decrease of the size of nanopores (described by the third component), while the overall number of nanopores is not affected. The approach to the analysis of positron annihilation lifetime spectra presented here can be applied to a wide range of functional nanomaterials with pronounced porosity.

The quantitative characterization of microstructure is most desirable for the establishment of structure-property relationships in polymer nanocomposites. In this work, the effects of graphene on the microstructure, mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties of the obtained graphene/polyethylene (PE) composites were investigated. In order to reveal the structure-performance relationship of graphene/PE composites, especially for the effects of the relative free volume fraction (fr) and interfacial interaction intensity (β), positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) was employed for its quantitative description. The relative free volume fraction fr gives a good explanation of the variation for surface resistivity, melting temperature, and thermal stability, and the variation of tensile strength and thermal conductivity agree well with the results of interfacial interaction intensity β. The results showed that fr and β have a significant effect on the properties of the obtained graphene/PE composites, and the effect on the properties was revealed.

In this study, pure polylactic acid (PLA) and composite polylactic acid/ curcumin (PLA / Cur) were prepared by a suspension of ultrasonically agitated micrometer-sized curcumin powder, which was mixed with chloroform solvent  under slow mechanical stirring and incorporated into the PLA. The resulting suspension was used to cast free-standing PLA / Cur composite films. The filler content was chosen to be 2.0 wt % curcumin. Physical properties (glass transition, temperature, mechanical and thermodynamic) were analyzed by Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy (PALS), which is a unique tool for analyzing the defects of polymer materials. The free volume and holebility of PLA and PLA / Cur were studied  in vacuum and temperature range of 283 to 353 K. Ortho-positronium (o Ps), life ,  and intensity were measured as more sensitive parameters to determine free volume dimensions. The results of the thermodynamic property of PLA, examined with PALS technique, revealed a phase change of around  58 ºC. Also, an improvement was observed in the PLA / Cur structure with the addition of curcumin, by reducing nano-size defects.

This work reports the effects of free volume on curcumin release in various polymer-based composite films. Curcumin-reinforced biocomposite films were fabricated with natural biopolymers (carrageenan and chitosan) and bioplastics (poly(lactide) (PLA) and poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT)) via the solvent casting method. The curcumin release test was performed using an aqueous medium, and it was found that it was released the fastest in the carrageenan film, followed by the chitosan, PLA, and PBAT films, presumably owing to the dissimilarity of the polymer matrix. The free volume of the polymer films was determined using positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) to understand the release phenomena of curcumin. The free volume fraction was varied and reliant on the type of polymer, with the highest in the PBAT-based film followed by the PLA-, chitosan-, and carrageenan-based films. The free volume method helps analyze the release of bioactive compounds in a polymer matrix and may help to achieve a better understanding of the release of bioactive compounds.

Tunable mesoporous silica films were prepared though a sol-gel process directed by the self-assembly of various triblock copolymers. Positron annihilation γ-ray energy spectroscopy and positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) based on intense pulsed slow positron beams as well as ellipsometric porosimetry (EP) combined with heptane adsorption were utilized to characterize the open porosity/interconnectivity and pore size distribution for the prepared films. The consistency between the open porosities was examined by the variations of orthopositronium (o-Ps) 3γ annihilation fractions and the total adsorbed volumes of heptane. The average pore sizes deduced by PALS from the longest-lived o-Ps lifetimes are in good agreement with those by EP on the basis of the Barrett–Joyner–Halenda model, as indicated by a well fitted line of slope k = 1. The results indicate that the EP combined with heptane adsorption is a useful method with high sensitivity for calibrating the mesopore size in highly interconnected mesoporous films, whereas PALS is a novel, complementary tool for characterizing both closed and open pores in them.
